I just wanted to share our great win with The Motherhood and say thank you again and also a huge thanks to Hebrew National for sponsoring the Picnic with a Purpose giveaway. We held our picnic party this past Sunday. My middle son graduated college in May and is on his way to his teaching assignment with Teach for America; he leaves tomorrow morning to fly to New Orleans for orientation and then he'll be in Phoenix for a month of training before returning to teach high school English for the next two years in New Orleans. I'd never heard of Teach for America until my son applied to work with them last year. I call it the Peace Corps for teachers except you are assigned for two years to a city in the United States that is in need of teachers in a lower-income rural or urban public schools. Our party was a combined graduation and send-off party for my son. Many of his high school teachers came to see him off as well as family, friends and neighbors. All of us couldn't be prouder of Jared and we know he's going to make a big difference in his students' lives. The party supplies and hot dogs were put to good use. I know it sounds "canned" but everyone really did like the hot dogs; my sister's boyfriend claims Hebrew National hot dogs are the best hot dogs around and I don't think anyone at our party disagreed; all five packages disappeared. While I had left-over pizza and chicken, there wasn't a lone hot dog to be found when the party was over. Hopefully, I've attached a photo of my oldest son (left) and his brother, our new teacher, enjoying one of the hot dogs.

Originally Posted by /profile.php?u=304 in /circle.php?l=5793 Here's the recipe for the pasta salad I made for yesterday's Detroit picnic. Everyone seemed to like it a lot. There's a little left over if you want some. Otherwise, you can make it yourself like this:

16 oz. corkscrew pasta, uncooked

8 oz. bottle Italian dressing (oil-based, not creamy)

1 bag frozen California-style veggies (carrots, cauliflower and broccoli)

1 can whole pitted black olives, drained

8 oz. cheddar cheese, cut into 1/2" cubes

Place frozen vegetables in large colander in sink. Cook pasta according to package directions, and pour over vegetables in colander to drain. Toss drained pasta and vegetables in a large bowl with dressing (depending on your taste, you may want to buy a larger bottle of dressing and add more before serving if the salad seems too dry to you). Add olives and cheese and toss again. Chill before serving.

We had a fabulous day for Philly's Picnic with a Purpose yesterday! The weather was PERFECT. We had a great turnout of local mom bloggers and friends. We ate LOTS of Hebrew National hotdogs. The kids had their faces painted, and they planted flowers for the residents at Home of the Sparrow. We collected GADS of donations and two ladies from the Home came and shared a little about what they do. Thank you, Hebrew National, for sponsoring such a fun event!

Cooper's pictures below tell the story better than I ever could, but I cannot believe what a spectacular day we had. The weather threatened early on, and there was even a little rain before the picnic started. But it turned out perfect, and everyone coming together to help was so amazing. My wonderful husband Greg shop-vacced and wiped down my car so it would be fit for Cooper to ride in, then loaded it with ALL the stuff for the picnic. He stayed behind at home for a while to clean up the disaster I had left while I drove to the park. PennyAJ showed up to help set up, even though she had a ton of her own work to do at home. I discovered I had forgotten to put my serving trays in the loading zone, and they were left behind at home after my husband left. Deborah to the rescue! She stopped and bought a serving tray for the veggies, and then she supervised the kids while they painted a gorgeous treasure chest for the SAY Detroit clinic. Cooper captured the whole day on her camera, my Greg manned the grill and cooked the dogs, and everybody pitched in to help the kids with crafts and to clean up. If it was a wonderful picnic, it wasn't because of me, it was because of my wonderful family and friends. I wish you all could have been there!

I am having the most wonderful time in Detroit. I wish all of you were here! Becki's Picnic was about fun, friends and making a difference - and then some. And to boot we had lots of our dear friends from TheMotherhood there too! PennyAJ and her daughter Ashley had us laughing non-stop. Becki is an incredible and gracious host and took care of all of us throughout the day - even after the picnic was over. I had the profound joy and good luck to have dinner with Becki and Deborah and then a little Sangria at Becki's after with PennyAJ and Ashley. My sides still ache from laughing so hard. And now I am curled up in Deborah's beautiful home, thinking about the magical day and am so grateful for my dear, dear friends here in TheMotherhood. And I get to have coffee in the morning with these two. How perfect is that!
