  • Rachel I wanted to share that I listened to Nick Cannons new comedy album “Mr. Showbiz” and it’s great! It is so funny that it actually had me laughing out loud which rarely happens. I also caught his stand-up special on Showtime on Saturday May 14 at 9pm. I believe they will be replaying it so you should look out of it…also very funny!

I knew Nick just had twins with Mariah Carey and is the host of America’s Got Talent (I love that show!) but I didn’t realize he was also a comedian!

“Mr. Showbiz” was already released on Monday 5/16 for itunes and on Amazon and it will be in stores Tuesday 5/31.

You can check out his website at http://nickcannonmrshowbiz.com. and there is also an IPad 2 contest on Nick Cannon’s Facebook page – click here to enter to win http://www.facebook.com/nickscannon?sk=app_201143516562748

    Wanted to share my find…enjoy!

  • juliepippert My friend Julie recommended this to me -- said it's fantastic and meaningful music about some tough topics, and it's cool for moms and great for kids:

An Indie Rocker Finds His Inner Child

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/fashion/29justin.html

“Willy Was a Whale” is the kind of head-bopping, silly-clever song that is a staple of the kiddie rock movement. It comes complete with a hand motion — throw arms up to form a big W with your head — for the tots in the mosh pit up front at concerts, and a little joke — Willy walks “all the way down to Weno, Nevada” — for the parents who buy the tickets. Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players do “Willy” at pretty much every show: it’s their “Born to Run.”
    Multimedia

But when you listen to “Willy” on the CD “Yellow Bus” — the second of seven children’s albums recorded by Mr. Roberts — the song that follows it is a bit jarring. “Mama is sad and I know that/she’s taken off her ring,” it begins. The child in the song tries to cheer Mama by offering toys — “I give her my Lego blocks to play/but the blocks won’t fit together today” — and, ultimately, himself: “I give her my heart and I don’t want it back.” It’s pretty much impossible to listen to without crying.

When he wrote “Mama Is Sad,” strumming a guitar outside on a sunny day, “I was laughing because I was like, ‘Nobody writes a kid’s song that’s so sad and depressing,’ ” Mr. Roberts recalled in an interview earlier this month.

“As adults we like to think kids live in this fantasy world of innocents,” he added. “But I watch kids really respond to their environment. The idea that a kid would see their mother or father was sad about something and try to fix it was very real.”

You might say Mr. Roberts is the Judy Blume of kiddie rock. Beside divorce, Mr. Roberts has songs about death (“Sandcastle,” written for a friend who lost his mother); changing homes ( “Moving,” for his wife, Chris, who grew up an Air Force brat); cancer (“Roller in the Coaster,” for a colleague of Chris’s); and demonizing the enemy (“Maybe the Monster,” loosely inspired by 9/11). In these and other story-songs, about bullies or blaming your brother or being afraid a pop fly might actually come your way, Mr. Roberts, a childless 40-year-old who pursued a religious studies Ph.D. after his indie-rock career never quite happened, has a remarkable ability to see through a child’s eyes.

I FELL for Justin even before I had kids, trailing my nieces and nephew to a couple of shows in Chicago, where he is based.

  • juliepippert Okay I admit it: I make up songs to well-known tunes all the time. We all sing along. I will also use this to break up a tense moment, such as those times I am on my last nerve and about to show my kids an example of a volcano outside of Iceland. I have been known to remake Amy Winehouse's Rehab over and over when the kids get into a No phase.

We just love music here. So that's why I think this article is sooooooo cool and interesting (even though it's about fifteen times above my level of composition lol:

    http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/22/compose-your-own/?src=tptw

    Compose your own

"My nine-month old son engages with music in a variety of ways as he moves through his daily life. He listens to music in the background while he focuses on other activities. He moves to music as my wife or I clap his hands and bounce him up and down in time to a song. And he creates music, banging his fists on a piano keyboard to play clusters of high and low notes. As judged by laughs and smiles, he likes all of these activities, but he enjoys creating music the most.

I similarly like to listen to music but enjoy creating it even more. I love to sing a soft lullaby to my son more than playing him a recording. I love to sit at the piano to play a familiar song more than listening to it on the stereo. And more than any of these things, I love to compose music. I love to start with some simple musical ideas and then experiment with them, gradually transforming them into something that captivates my imagination. I love to share this music with performers and audiences and to invite them to make their own sense of it."

It goes on to discuss why we should make our own music and how we can!

Big hat tip to @techmama for pointing me to this!

    • Brandie I totally make up on my own words too to songs. All. The. Time. Yes, you may feel very sorry for my family. I also have a knack to - no matter what word you say - pull a real song out and sing it that has that word in it. Again - All. The. Time. Some times my husband looks at me with these huge pleading eyes and says "Please. Please. Just stop singing for the next hour."
It might be less annoying if I could, you know, carry a tune ;-)

    • Deborah So fun...but are their outfits distracting? They looked naked the way the shadows of the jackets fell. Maybe it's just me? lol.

    • MamaMayowa I think its great!! I have a good ear, and Im not impressed all too often, and I think they sound awesome! I agree the outfits are a bit distracting, but I think they compliment the quirkiness of the show!

  • kateskate I'm in love with this artist, Corneille! I recently discovered his music (even though he already has two albums out) and found out the Amazon is giving away on of his singles before his album is released. If you're a fan of John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Musiq, etc, then give Corneille a listen. You'll love as much as I do!

  • JillSimpson I know everyone's musical tastes are different, but I thought it might be fun to recommend new(ish) songs you've heard and are loving. Right now I'm listening to (courtesy of my little brother, who's much more up on music, and WFUV.org, my favorite local college radio station): In My Arms by Teddy ThompsonSilver Lining by Rilo KileyChasing Pavements by Adele100 Yard Dash by Raphael SaadiqAs you might guess, I love upbeat music for the gym and R&B, Soul, etc.And if you haven't tried it out, the Genius feature on iTunes is a very cool way to make a playlist in a minute. I've used it for parties, the gym, etc. and it's amazing--you check a few songs that you love that are the kind of hthing you want to play, and it automatically creates a playlist using all the music already  in your library (it can also suggest new stuff, but I haven't found that as useful yet).

    • Cooper What a great convo idea! My kids take over on the iPod downloads so I have to do the Genius search and find my own kind of favs. I'm looking at my "most recent" on my iPod and see my daughter added Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall.

Lori is a mother of five (ages 17 to 2) who lives outside Boston. She didn't start singing or writing songs until she was 27 and now she's on her fifth album and wrote three songs on Faith Hill's Grammy-winning album. I love how she sings for us moms.

  • Brandie I LOVE music ... just love it. And I love a wide variety of music. I've always wanted to learn to play the piano (I took lessons for about 6 weeks when I was 13 and then dropped out which I regret now LOL). My two daughters started lessons this spring and I love that they are playing. I decided a few days ago that I would start to do the oldest dd's homework and play from her books and learn as much as I can that way. It's kind of crazy - but I don't have the time or money to take lessons myself right now and I figure I can learn a great deal this way. I mean, it can't hurt right?Although I was playing the other day and she walked up "Mom, you know you are not playing right. It's supposed to be forte and you are playing piano." I admit, it's very hard to be corrected by my 8 year old - but she was right! I told her with piano, she can be my teacher with this instead of me being her teacher LOL! =)
