Hi, I tried to post something on a lecture I'd gone to about our children and growing up online. It didn't post saying that it was not possible to submit at t his time. Could that been because I was too long-winded?

I'm on firefox and I only get it if I opened the web page, and don't come back to post for quite a few hours. Haven't tried the site in IE though.

I've started getting "that request cannot be processed now" is that what you see? I've wondered if it was a timeout thing, but I just got it and was active seconds before.

I gues I'll try to install Mozilla firefox. Thanks.

I'm sorry you're not liking the new webpage. I do miss the Mom Radar and seeing everything right there BUT the old one keeps "dying" on me and was very slow. I go to SEARCH a lot and some feeds from my profile page. You always post a question in this circle, and someone will give you an answer.

Although, I do like the new look of the page. I did like how everything was right there on the old one. You could see what everyone was up to, friends feed all in one spot. I guess after some time, this will seem just as easy.

Great ideas, everyone. I agree completely that EVERYDAY is Earth Day....Last night we watched "The Blessed Earth" simulcast as a family and enjoyed praying for our sacred planet. If you missed it, you can view it all week long at the link I posted above. Today, my son and his entire Safety Patrol 5th Grade class are flying to Washington DC for their class trip. I find it amazing that he will be there on this day with his friends and teachers...wow, huh?

My 9yo and I signed up for Power Down week in school but it's just impossible to do because their homeworks deal with online math tests. Also, my 9yo realizes that there are great shows about the earth on Earth Day that he didn't want to miss...And I agree with Brandie, every day, we have to try to figure out ways to conserve and be respectful of nature.

Honestly, we don't do much. Our town has a party Saturday that we usually go to, but I think we have other plans. Power down week seems fun to try though. I guess, we'll talk about it and maybe do something, but honestly, (and I don't say this to be preachy or sound better than anyone else, because I am not at all) but I try to be conscience of stuff every single day. And so while I think Earth day is great and I think it can get people to make changes that they aren't already making, I feel like we are already doing that. Maybe I'll make a cake to celebrate the Earth so it's still something special. =)

This week is Power Down Week! That means, I'll be exhausted trying to entertain my child since there'll be no electronic gadgets. Our school has provided us with this week's schedule: Monday - pizza night; Tuesday - Family Fun Night ; Wednesday - after school walk/bike to park ; Thursday - after school grounds clean-up to celebrate Earth Day; Friday - after school yoga; Saturday - Fun Run (Spring Scramble)

Hmmm ... there's not much we don't agree on. He does let htem (occasionally) watch The Simpson's - which I HATE! But if the show gets too bad/crass/adultish, he will change the channel. I guess I look at it as it's an occasional thing that they think is a special treat, so I let it slide, even though I would say no. However, if it were every week, or more frequently, I would seriously have to talk to my husband more about it. Have you watched the shows at all (like as a rerun) or can you get a DVD of older season and watch it, just you and dh and point out to him specifically what bothers you about it? Do you see it influencing the kids - are they repeating things/actions that they see on those shows that just make you want to cringe? bring that up. We don't have a hard fast rule like Deborah where one no means no because sometimes I'm more likely to say no out of fear and not out of any specific reason. But hubs would never just do it - we talk about it and try to work through it. Usually if we can't both agree, we try to find the compromise (as in the Simpsons - he rarely lets them watch it and if it gets too over the top he'll stop it.) Good luck!

So, do you really know what is or isn't on them? For us, our kids are 15 and 9 the deal on everything....is ONE no means no. So for us the answer would be no, but it means we ( my husband and I would talk about the issue and may re-vistit said decision later) I'm interested on what you both decide.

Um, the piece was horrible. I'm glad you didn't watch it. The reporter was clearly biased, and I'm sorry, it felt like she didn't do anything to hide that fact at all. When Stephanopoulos introduced the piece he said he was biased, that it sounded crazy, etc. It was horribly done frankly. In addition to just making unschooling look horrible, the reporter also had an issue that the 13 year old boy didn't play sports (but had no issue with the girl playing sports - only asked her about academics). Which also bothered me - so he didn't play sports? Big flipping deal. Some boys play them, some boys don't. Why was that such a big deal to her? Would the reporter give a child going to school who didn't play sports such a hard time too? I don't know - but the unschooling aside, that bothered me too - as if in the reporters mind all boys should play sports and girls should just study all the time? Ugh. The whole thing made my head spin LOL!

I didn't but thought of you when I heard it was going to be featured. What did you think? Without having watched, I think the term *unschooling* frightens some people. I love the idea of following your child's interest and going from there.

Yes, parents take turns. SO, I only had to get a meal once. School sports are expensive. For baseball alone, it was $275.00 and he doesn't play much. Some nights only 2 innings in two games. It's not that I'm that generous...it's that some of us are being taken advantage of. What can I do? I'm in a tough spot. It's not like it used to be when he was little anymore. Speaking to the coach would be the killer of ANY playing time. Ah....high school, does it ever end?

I'm not sure I'm that nice LOL! Deborah - were you told ahead of time that you'd have to do that. I don't think they did that when I was in high school except for like play-off games, last games, etc. I guess if my kids get that far I will be there to do my part, but buying a snack and juice box for 12 7-9 year girls is a lot cheaper than feeding a baseball team at your son's level LOL! =)

Deborah, that's a lot of money for not playing...you're so generous. Do parents take turns? Virginia, yes - Brandie is just much nicer :) This is probably why my kids don't do sports - except for my 9yo who does gymnastics. We bring our own food and once a year, we just have to help out and contribute during the States meet. But then again the fees, registration and training for gymnastics is costing me both arms and legs :)

So much easier. Would have loved to, though I'd have liked my son to actually play too. Spending lots of $$$$ to off-set the boys that actually get playing time. ugh.

I do get if it a double header that they need to eat, but I think in these economic times asking someone to put out that much money is a bit much. How about asking everyone to pack their own picnic and the team still eats together?

They need to eat, though. Between games--double headers, two to three times a week, after school. But, for some families it could be a bit of a hardship. I thought I got away easy with feeding them for under $75. (team+coaches and enough left for my husband and other son)

I hear you. With just the 5 of us, we need to pies and an antipasto salad. My oldest and middle son can easily eat 3 pieces and they are only 10 & 8. I think who ever came up with that really needs to rethink it. I think that would be more appropriate at the last game of the season not every game.

The pizzas were for 15 year old boys. Have you fed one recently? My boys are eating me out of house and home. LOL :)

Sorry, Brandie, I have to say that I'm not a big fan of the after sport snack either for the reasons your coach gave. I just think that it just is a lot to ask. Deb - the pizza thing is just crazy! Another reason that I hate snack is that many times an activity will end right before either lunch or dinner. It just isn't necessary IMO. I have to also add that as my son's den leader we did away with snacks this year. His meetings are from 6 to 7. You just don't know if people are planning to eat after the meeting (I know we were). I have to say none of the parents even cared.

I guess. Thus far though - we don't need to provide 12 pizzas ;-) We've never had a parent forget, and our games have always been after dinner. I see why he did it. But it bums me out. And yeah, snacks weren't always healthy, but my kids have a game once a week at this point. I figure it won't kill them. Seems I'm in the minority - most people are saying similar things to what you are saying.

It gets ridiculous. Quickly. My older son's freshman team requires a snack/small meal between games. Seriously, bought 12 pizzas last week. And then drinks. Missed my boy play while picking up said pizzas. He doesn't get much play time as it is. I don't always appreciate the kinds of snacks people choose. Not that it is THAT big of a deal, but just before dinner? I'm with Virginia.

I have no idea, but I know fish oil capsules are a good source of Omega 3s, and my doctor and cardiologist recommend taking them in general, so it couldn't hurt to try it.

Just heard it happened in Chile now too. And it happened twice in Arkansas (I only thought once). And the fish in Arkansas, Chesapeake - and in New Zealand and Brazil. Ummm, is it a slow news week and this isn't all that uncommon? Because, didn't the Aztecs say 2012 was it? Yikes!

It has me so worried! There was also a big fish kill in the Chesapeake (thought to be the especially cold weather), but still, millions of fish?! The test results are going to take awhile, it sounds like.
