What are ideas you’ve found for successful volunteering with kids? I think it makes so much more of an impact on kids when they get to go somewhere and feel firsthand that they make a difference. I took my kids to the Ronald McDonald House twice to prepare dinner for the families there. It was a while ago but they still talk about it. I’d like to do more stuff with them, as a family.

We are having a hard time finding anything that lets kids do something, let alone small children.
My dd is going for Kids Against hunger tomorrow, but even then, technically they want the helpers to be 9 and over. She’s only 8 so my mom called and they said it would be okay, but I wish I could find something/some place where the younger kids were welcomed and encouraged to do more, ya know?

I posted a link to Family-to-Family, which has activities that specifically involve kids, like “Giving Birthday Parties,” where you throw a party and kids put together packages for kids who otherwise wouldn’t get to have a party, including cake mix, frosting, candles, a small gift, and a goody bag. This organization helps kids in America, and it might be a wake up to my kids to learn that there are kids in this country so poor that their families can’t even afford to get them a birthday gift, let alone a party.

Yeah, I saw that link …. I guess nothing there moved me enough to action. Nothing said “GREAT IDEA!! I want to do it NOW!” to me.
Hmmm … my daughter still wants to raise money for Kids Against Hunger so we will have to do something and soon because she is motivated to do it RIGHT NOW! LOL

About a month ago, the kids in my son’s third grade class had to write a paragraph about what they would do if they found a pot of gold. Most of the boys wanted to buy every video game ever made, and one girl said she would marry Zac Efron. But one little girl said she wanted to buy food for kids in Nigeria. I think her mother was born in Africa so I’m sure this little girl has a more acute image of hunger than a lot of American kids do. You should be proud that your daughter is thinking of other kids, even though she has enough to eat herself! What a good girl!

And a good mama, too, of course ;)

Thanks Becki … but I suppose if I was a really good mom, we’d have done something about it by now. Although, the wheels in my head are turning and I think I might have a way to have fun and help her reach her goal. We’ll see and I promise to keep you all updated!
