Green schools are inarguably the right decision for our children and the environment. Though up-front costs are higher, green buildings save enough in operation and maintenance expenses to pay for their original construction in a matter of months. The money saved on energy bills (the annual energy savings from a single green school is generally [...]

One family tries to become more green!

Today we mixed up some homemade weed killer - that is pretty darn safe - and sprayed it a lot of places. Actually, my 8 year old sprayed which thrilled her a LOT. Even she told me "but last year daddy told me the weed killer was poison and we couldn't even touch where he sprayed it."Yep, my darling, last year it was. This year, as of right now, it's not.So I am crossing my fingers that it works. I REALLY want it to work.I will update in a few days and

I think it’s pretty clear, I think Shea Terra Organics is a great company, with an awesome CEO and founder and they have great products. Now it’s time to share and give away one of my favorite scents, the Lavender of the Khoisan Indigenous Shea Butter gift set. This is the scent my son likes and request

Thanks to a heads up from Weekly Phil, any ecofab finds of the future that need shipping are going to get slipped into one of these new eco-friendly courier bags from DHL. These babies are stronger, fully reusable and recyclable, and can degrade in two years (as oppossed to 1,000!) without leaching any of the toxins associated with conventional bags.

This could be me at this Sunday's SF Bay to Breakers because, you know, I have a Barbie Doll body and a giant BRITA filter cartridge in my living room. It could be me if I can get at least one volunteer to walk the 12K (7.65 miles) with me, hold my water bottle, and pass out flyers to the cheering crowds. I'd love to have a whole team of people walking with us and wearing signs that say "www.takebackthefilter.org." But it will only take one

One thing the Marketing to Women conference definitely was not about was reducing consumption.
Virtually every presentation given during the two-day confab of manufacturers, marketers and advertising mavens focused on how to get women to buy more...and more...and more. Stephanie Ouyoumjian, Director of Strategy at Publicis, encouraged companies to "have a conversation" with women to build market share. "Every 1% of getting her to talk leads to

Do you like stories? Because I’m in the mood for a story.
Once upon a time, there was a little chemical called bisphenol A, or BPA. BPA was small and lumpy. It looked kinda’ like this:
Oh, sure, you know this story, right? We’ve talked about BPA before (here and here). Oh, but listen to [...]

So by now you may have heard about the recent survey suggesting that if a stay-at-home mom could be compensated in dollars rather than personal satisfaction and unconditional love, she'd rake in a nifty sum of nearly $117,000 a year based on a reported average of 54.6 hours per week. Even though the study has already been picked apart by economists, armchair pundits and those who probably aren't mothers, I think all moms can agree that

I was recently in New York City for a party sponsored by Kohler and actually got to meet family members who actually had the last name Kohler! I thought that was pretty cool, because you rarely meet people with bear the last name of the namesake company. It would be like meeting someone named Fred Starbucks, if the company was started by someone with the last name Starbucks. And you say, "oh, i Love

This is my attempt to document the changes my family and I have made in our attempt to "be the change." We're trying to save the planet in our own way, changing one bad habit at a time.

I got out on my bike again today. The high temp was 44 degrees, and it was a fabulous day for a ride! I wore earwarmers on the way to the grocery store but didn't need them on the way home. My mileage total for the day was 11.14 miles - just a little over 5-1/2 miles each way. It's amazing how much harder that 5-1/2 miles is on the way home, though, with an extra 30 or 35 lbs of groceries!

The answer? NEITHER!! Why not paper bags? Many people choose paper thinking its better for the environment but this isn’t necessarily the case. Paper bags are made from virgin wood, timber grown specifically for this use, creating greenhouse gases and...
