Defining "woman friendly" for myself...

I grew up in the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is one of the most traditional Christian denominations around. Many of the practices of the church derive from ancient Jewish practices—for instance, women may not receive communion when they are menstruating (don’t worry, nobody checks, it’s an honor system). Women are also not allowed to serve on the altar.
On its face, the religion does not appear to be very “woman friendly.” In fact, for years, I fumed internally that women were treated like second class citizens. More recently, I’ve come to feel that worship is about honoring God, and not about my status and what I “get” to do or not do. I am no less loved or cared for by God than any other member of my church, male or female. I really love the beauty and tradition of my church and can’t picture myself anywhere else.
I am curious about how others feel about the religions in which they were raised, and how they came to identify with the spiritual or religious tradition they’re currently involved with.
