Technically, my son’s IEP is for speech and language, not autism. I wish it weren’t today—I’m tired and stressed out and not feeling well physically. I’m worried that I won’t be in any shape to advocate for him. Keep us in your thoughts; we need to get a good plan in place.

It went okay. My son is going to be getting some resource room time, which I didn’t really want for him last year, but this year I’m willing to get any support that’s going to help him succeed.

Glad it went okay. Hope that this plan works well for him

My son’s triennial review takes place next week. This is the three-year review where a battery of tests is given to the child/young adult and the IEP team reports their findings. In other triennial review years, we have combined the annual review of goals and objectives. Last time I purposely separated these two important meetings by making their “anniversary dates” at least two months apart. It’s just way too time-consuming and paper intensive to accomplish in one sitting.
I’ll report back after next Thursday’s meeting. Meantime, we are enjoying Spring Break…

Thinking of you, Molly. This was our review year, too. My impression is that my son is still meeting grade level expectations (except in writing) but I can see how he could fall behind easily. I wish that I had thought to separate the review of the battery of tests from the goals and objectives. I did at least insist on reconvening the IEPC before the end of the year to make a recommendation for classroom placement next year.
Good luck to you and your son, Molly! Let us know how everything goes!

Well, it’s over for now..actually, it’s never really over. There are always points to be followed up, one more test to administer, and sometimes, as in this triennial review year, a troubleseome teacher/administrator or two. I did not bring an educational consultant or advocate with me this time, which may or may not have been the best idea. Test results are so difficult to analyze, and I got the idea today that some of the self-proclaimed “experts” on the team did not really know what to make of them. Truth be told, most available assessment tools are not written for the autistic population. There is ONE test that has still to be administered called the TEACHH T-TAP. That is the one testing tool that is geared for an autistic child/young adult.
If anyone has any familiarity with this test, please post your comments here!
