Holiday Gift Ideas

LATEST POSTED BY: Erin OMany Americans already finished holiday shopping Retailers need to offer bigger incentives to win sales in weeks before Christmas More than a third of U.S. shoppers are already done with most of their holiday shopping, a survey showed on Monday, signaling that retailers need to offer bigger incentives to win sales in the few weeks before Christmas. The findings underscore the fragility of the U.S. recovery, since consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the nation's economy. About 32 percent of people surveyed by America's Research Group said they finished a majority of their Christmas shopping in November. Last month included Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when stores pulled out all the stops on discounts to woo shoppers during their biggest season of the year. More than 6 percent completed most of their holiday shopping in the first weekend of December. The questions were asked exclusively for Reuters as part of a larger America's Research Group survey. "There is very little retailers can do unless they really have some incredible sales that force that consumer to reconsider if they want ... to make an extra purchase now," said America's Research Group President Britt Beemer. About 28 percent of people surveyed said they plan to take a break from shopping, now that the Black Friday weekend is behind them. "Many, many consumers, when they got those early bird specials on Black Friday, decided that that was going to be the big purchase for their family," Beemer said, adding that many shoppers spent more than they planned on Black Friday. Sales during the Black Friday weekend soared to $52.4 billion, according to the National Retail Federation, which sees sales for the full season up 2.8 percent. What shoplifters are taking these holidays The survey also highlighted other grievances of the post-recession U.S. consumer. More than 43 percent of those surveyed said they expect the debt crisis in Europe to hurt the United States, while about 36 percent of Americans said political gridlock in Washington as the biggest problem facing the U.S. economy right now. About 27 percent worry about the rising cost of living, while about a quarter of those surveyed see unemployment as the key issue faced by the U.S. economy. Many shoppers said that discount chains would be their destination of choice to do the rest of the holiday shopping, with nearly 38 percent of holiday shoppers planning to visit one, highlighting that shoppers remain highly price-sensitive. "You have got to give them a deal that is incredible," Beemer said, suggesting retailers slash prices and offer deep discounts of 50 percent and 60 percent to lure shoppers this month. Department stores offering unique merchandise also found many fans, with about 30 percent of shoppers planning to visit one during the rest of the season. The telephone survey of 1,000 people was conducted from December 3-4, and has an error factor of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. LATEST POSTED BY: Erin O13-year-old Texas boy wins Nat'l Geographic Bee WASHINGTON – A 13-year-old boy from Texas won the National Geographic Bee on Wednesday by correctly identifying the country that is home to the Tungurahua volcano. Tine Valencic of Colleyville didn't miss a single question during the final round of the bee, defeating nine other boys and taking home a $25,000 scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. The answer that got him the win: Ecuador. "I'm just taking it all in," he said after winning and being lent tissues to dry his eyes by both the bee moderator, "Jeopardy!' game show host Alex Trebek, and the bee's second-place finisher. To get to the bee in Washington, students had to win their respective state-level competitions. The group of winners, all fourth through eighth graders, competed in a preliminary round Tuesday, narrowing the field to 10. In the final round Wednesday at National Geographic's headquarters, students answered questions ranging from identifying the flags of various countries to what country the "bandura" is the national instrument of: Ukraine. Anthropologist Jane Goodall and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both asked taped video questions. To clinch the victory, Valencic won a best-of-five final round, which included a question asking for the Italian name for sediment deposits that connect a shoreline with an offshore island: tombolo. Valencic and his opponent, 11-year-old Nilai Sarda of Georgia, got that one right. But Sarda stumbled on the question about the Tungurahua volcano, believing incorrectly that it was in Peru. He takes home $15,000 for second place. Third-place finisher Stefan Petrovic of Lawrence, Kan., won $10,000. Aside from the three top-place finishers, the finalists competing Wednesday were: Alex Kimn of South Dakota, Kevin Mi of Indiana, Luke Hellum of Arizona, Tuvya Bergson-Michelson of California, Karthik Karnik of Massachusetts, Anthony Cheng of Utah and Andrew Hull of Alaska. The bee will be broadcast on National Geographic Channel over four nights in June and will also be broadcast on public TV stations. LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SMIT project tries to turn trash into a game CNN - Here's the problem with recycling: It's boring. But maybe it doesn't have to be. A Boston company called Greenbean Recycle is trying to make the act of keeping bottles and cans out of the landfill into a fun, competitive and engaging game for students at MIT. The new company, which won an innovation prize this week from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has converted a beefy recycling machine on MIT's campus into a point tabulator of sorts. When students approach the high-tech trash can to dump in their recyclables, they punch their phone number on a touch screen. A bar-code reader in the machine counts the number of cans, bottles and the like that the person has dropped off - and then uploads that data to Greenbean's website. Recyclers can track their progress online, and even engage in competitions with fellow students. "We want to be like the Zynga of recycling," said CEO Shanker Sahai, 38, referring the maker of such social games as "FarmVille." Competitions between fraternities at MIT have been particularly fruitful, he said, with the houses trying to compete against each other to get the top spot on an online recycling leaderboard. LATEST POSTED BY: DeborahThe new captain jumped from the deck, fully dressed, and sprinted through the water. A former lifeguard, he kept his eyes on his victim as he headed straight for the couple swimming between their anchored sportfisher and the beach. “I think he thinks you’re drowning,” the husband said to his wife. They had been splashing each other and she had screamed but now they were just standing, neck-deep on the sand bar. “We’re fine, what is he doing?” she asked, a little annoyed. “We’re fine!” the husband yelled, waving him off, but his captain kept swimming hard. ”Move!” he barked as he sprinted between the stunned owners. Directly behind them, not ten feet away, their nine-year-old daughter was drowning. Safely above the surface in the arms of the captain, she burst into tears, “Daddy!”
How did this captain know – from fifty feet away – what the father couldn’t recognize from just ten? Drowning is not the violent, splashing, call for help that most people expect. The captain was trained to recognize drowning by experts and years of experience. The father, on the other hand, had learned what drowning looks like by watching television.

Tea Time
"Women are like tea bags, you never know how strong they are until they get in hot water." Well, seems like the world is up to its eyeballs in "hot water" these days and, as it always has been, mothers shoulder much of the burdens. Like tea bags, we show our strength in that hot water, but it is also when we need each other most. That is where Tea Time comes in: women coming together for strength, support and solutions. Here we post our challenges, or questions, our needs for advice. It is also where we offer support, our wisdom and our suggestions. We will also have scheduled live chats to work on specific problems or bring in "experts" on various topics. Ideas and brainstorming welcome. We can get through this, together.

Raising our Kids & a Garden Too
Welcome to The Motherhood Community Garden! Every year I learn a little more about gardening. Would love to connect with other moms who also like to dig in the dirt and make things grow.
LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SFirst Lady writes book on edible gardening Washington (CNN) – First lady, wife, mother, careerist, fashionista - Michelle Obama can now add "author" to her list of credentials. Obama has written a book that highlights one of her most visible initiatives as first lady: promoting better nutrition and edible gardening as a means for Americans to get and stay healthy. "American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools, and Communities" aims to explore "how increased access to healthy, affordable food can promote better eating habits and improve the health of families and communities across America," according to a press release issued Monday by the Crown Publishing Group. "Mrs. Obama will describe how her daughters Sasha and Malia were catalysts for change in her own family's eating behavior, which inspired Mrs. Obama to plant an edible garden on the South Lawn - the first since Eleanor Roosevelt's "Victory Garden," planted during World War II." The first lady did not accept an advance for the book and will donate all proceeds to a charity to be revealed later, the statement says. Random House Inc., Crown Publishing Group's parent, will also make a donation to a charity. The book will be on sale nationwide starting April 10. Pittsburgh Moms
Share information, resources, tips, activities and ideas about living and doing things with your family in the Burgh.
LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SThis is a GREAT article about yoga studios in Pittsburgh. If you ever think about going to a class, I HIGHLY recommend Amazing Yoga. It's a fantastic place and as you can see from the article, they're only going to get better... THE EVOLVING ROLE OF YOGA STUDIOS Today, it seems there are more yoga studios than coffee shops. On a block here in Pittsburgh the scoreboard reads: Coffee shops 3 Yoga studios 4 and 1 (with a lowercase “l”) lululemon. Is this a good thing, a great thing?….Of course it’s good, great. One style, one teacher, one studio will never connect with every student. Given our beautiful uniqueness, yogis need options. (If only the yoga world would set aside its’ ridiculous my style is better than your style wars. Isn’t yoga suppose to be a unifier?? but I digress and that’s a topic for another day…) The bottom line is this: the more yoga the better. “Yoga Journal” estimates that 15 million folks in the US practice yoga. According to YogaFinder, there are some 12,000 yoga studios and that number is still growing. When we opened Amazing Yoga in 2000, we were only the 2nd studio in Pittsburgh—now there are at least thirty. This growth is fantastic: more people are taking care of themselves. The question is this: Is all this yoga making an impact in the world? I hope so. I’d like to think it has. All these yoga studios and yoga students seem like a golden opportunity to make a positive change in the world. But to be honest, I think we are under-performing, not yet realizing our potential: Yoga studios, teachers and students alike, need to stretch beyond their studio walls. Stretch more than their hamstrings and groins. The stretching needs to evolve into reaching, as in community out-reach. So what is the role of a yoga studio, in the local community, in the global community? Find out by reading the full article: http://www.elephantjournal.com/2011/02/the-evolving-role-of-yoga-studios/ViewFebruary.17th.2011
