ONE Mom Can Make a Difference

TheMotherhood has partnered with the ONE Campaign to support the amazing advocacy work they do in developing countries, especially their efforts on behalf of mothers and children in Africa.  From July 23-30, 2011, Emily and Cooper will be in Kenya with ONE and 8 other social media moms. Be a part of the journey – sign up here for updates: http://one.org/us/actnow/moms/ and help shine a blazing spotlight on extreme poverty and disease, and in the process make change!  Here's a link to their schedule in Kenya, with daily actions you can take: http://www.themotherhood.com/post/show/id/492228 and here are links to ways you can follow along and see pictures, too: http://www.themotherhood.com/post/show/id/492230

When Cooper and I started blogging in 2004, we had no idea what was coming.
Seriously, who could have imagined the mind-blowingly creative ways that we would all would use the web to make our lives better?!
Down the road, I have no doubt we’ll look back on these days and say, “That’s when it all changed.”
I was thinking about that idea – that we’re living in this incredible time in history when our lives are changing in so many ways for the good - when ONE asked me to blog about their 12 Days of Change Campaign and to focus in particular on Living Proof.
Here’s the connection. We never imagined our lives could change so much so quickly, and across the ocean, vast improvements are happening in Africa that would have been inconceivable a decade ago.
Just this week, the cover story in the Economist is “Africa Rising: The Hopeful Continent.”
    Africa … The Hopeful Continent.
Not many people (aside from the ONE Campaign) would have said that about Africa ten years ago.
Yet, “in eight of the past ten years, Africa has grown faster than East Asia, including Japan,” according to the Economist. “Africa now has the fastest growing middle class in the world.”
The health of millions has improved.
In a Living Proof video, Melinda Gates says that 3 million people are now receiving antiretroviral drugs to control HIV/AIDS. That includes a lot of moms who are staying alive and can now raise their children and do all the things that moms do to make things better for their families and neighbors.
We really might see a healthy, prosperous Africa in our lifetimes.
And that’s what the Living Proof Project is showing us - the stories of the incredible progress being made by some of the world’s poorest people.
In the spirit of the holidays, join us today to share and marvel at what’s been made possible in our lives and in the lives of Africans.
Today’s 12 Days of Change action is super easy: Share Living Proof with your friends!!!
Use Facebook, Twitter and the blogs to talk about Living Proof and share a video, a ONE PSA, a story or fact about smart and effective aid that is working in Africa.
    Here’s a tweet if you’d like:

    We Heart Tomatoes!

ConAgra recently presented some impressive research results at the American Dietetic Association's Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, suggesting that the nutrients in tomatoes may have a measurable impact on heart disease prevention. Using Hunt’s tomatoes is a great way to get a significant source of fiber, Vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene into your diet. In fact, according to a study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lycopene absorption is two to three times greater in canned tomato products than raw tomatoes. Also, Hunt’s tomatoes are flash-steamed to help them keep their backyard-garden-fresh taste, are 100% natural and contain no artificial preservatives or ingredients.

    LATEST POSTED BY: Erin O
Do you get flu shots every year? __ Time for flu shots, and some may get a tiny needle WASHINGTON – It's flu vaccine time again — and some lucky shot-seekers will find that the needle has shrunk. The first flu shot that works with a less-scary skin prick instead of an inch-long needle is hitting the market this fall. Sorry kids, this option so far is just for adults, and it's so brand-new that it will take some searching to find a dose. But there are plenty of the other varieties — standard shots, a special high-dose shot for seniors and the needle-free squirt-in-the-nose option — to go around. At least 166 million doses of flu vaccine are expected to be produced this year. The big question is whether people will get it. Usually each year's flu vaccine varies from the previous versions as different influenza strains emerge. This year, the vaccine's a duplicate because the three flu strains that sickened people last winter still are circulating. Scientific studies aren't clear about how much a person's immunity wanes over a year, although it varies by age and overall health. But federal health officials and the American Academy of Pediatrics weighed the evidence and say don't skip this year's vaccination — it's the only way to be sure your immune system remains revved enough for the best protection. "You're not going to be able to count on that vaccine protecting you throughout a second season," says Dr. Lisa Grohskopf of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A yearly vaccination now is recommended for virtually everyone, except babies younger than 6 months and people with severe allergies to the eggs used to make it. Last year, 49 percent of children and 41 percent of adults were vaccinated. Cellphone Ban Propsoed For Drivers by National Transporation Safety Board
    By John Crawley
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. safety investigators called on Tuesday for a nationwide ban on texting and cell phone use while driving, a prohibition that would include certain applications of hands-free technology becoming more common in new cars.
The National Transportation Safety Board recommendation covers portable devices only but still goes beyond measures proposed or imposed to date by regulators and states, most of which already ban texting while behind the wheel.
"When it comes to using electronic devices, it may seem like it's a quick call or a quick text or a tweet, but accidents happen in the blink of an eye," said NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman. "No emails, no texts, no calls. It's worth a human life."

    Centsible Moms

Centsible Moms is a place to discuss saving money, making smart money choices, and living a centsible life. This isn't just for the frugal minded moms, maybe you want to spave (spend to save), or you want to get rid of the stuff you could care less about so you can spend more time and more money on the things you do care about. Living a centsible life is all about making smart choices, and being able to manage your money, whether you're a stay at home mom, or a CEO.

    LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla S
Hmm...is this 'centsible' or just plain weird? ___________ Why your grandma swipes sugar packets CNN - If you build it, they will come. And if you put it on the table, chances are someone is going to take it. This includes, but is certainly not limited to, condiment sachets, paper napkins, individual coffee creamers, cracker packets, and just about anything else “not wrapped for individual sale” that can easily be stuffed into purses and/or pockets without a single qualm. Whether it’s your best friend, grandma, crazy uncle or maybe even yourself doing the lifting, evidence of the petty pilfering can be found in drawers and car glove boxes across the nation – each with their own little cache of restaurant and sugar caddy bounty. Diane Merrits of Orlando, Florida, says she saves money this way. She hasn’t had to buy coffee creamer in years, takes extra ketchup packets at fast food restaurants and saves all the leftover condiments sachets when she orders delivery. She even washes and reuses plastic tableware because “it is good for the environment and better than wasting money.” “It’s easy for some people to say – to rationalize – taking these items is not going to have an impact. 'No one is going to feel it if I take five Sweet N’Lows,'” says Kristene Doyle, psychologist and the Associate Executive Director of the Albert Ellis Institute. For those people, it’s the restaurant's way of paying it forward. “Although there is an unwritten understanding that condiments and small spices or ingredients for making the food served at restaurants more flavorful are there for limited use, some people choose to see this as an unpaid bonus of having come to the restaurant,” agrees Patricia Farrell, clinical psychologist and author of “How to Be Your Own Therapist.” Farrell adds some of the caddy swipers might say to themselves, “It's there for me, isn't it? Why shouldn't I take it? If they only wanted me to have a little bit, why didn't they just put out a little bit?” - an example of what psychologists call attribution of responsibility.

    Manners? Please and Thank You.

Sometimes kids just don't realize it's impolite to interrupt, pick their nose, or loudly observe that the lady walking in front of them has a large behind. And in the hustle and bustle of daily life, busy moms and dads don't always have the time to focus on etiquette. But if you reinforce these 25 must-do manners, you'll raise a polite, kind, well-liked child.- Manner #1 When asking for something, say "Please." Manner #2 When receiving something, say "Thank you." Manner #3 Do not interrupt grown-ups who are speaking with each other unless there is an emergency. They will notice you and respond when they are finished talking. Manner #4 If you do need to get somebody's attention right away, the phrase "excuse me" is the most polite way for you to enter the conversation. Manner #5 When you have any doubt about doing something, ask permission first. It can save you from many hours of grief later. Manner #6 The world is not interested in what you dislike. Keep negative opinions to yourself, or between you and your friends, and out of earshot of adults. Manner #7 Do not comment on other people's physical characteristics unless, of course, it's to compliment them, which is always welcome. Manner #8 When people ask you how you are, tell them and then ask them how they are. Read the list in its entirety at the link above.

Parents Embrace Documentary on Pressures of School By TRIP GABRIEL Published: December 8, 2010 It isn’t often that a third of a movie audience sticks around to discuss its message, but that is the effect of “Race to Nowhere,” a look at the downside of childhoods spent on résumé-building. “How do you help your children balance when the whole education system is pushing, pushing, pushing, and you want your kids to be successful?” Alethea Lewis, a mother of two, asked a roomful of concerned parents who had just seen the film, a documentary, last week in Bronxville, N.Y., at a screening co-sponsored by the private Chapel School. With no advertising and little news media attention, “Race to Nowhere” has become a must-see movie in communities where the kindergarten-to-Harvard steeplechase is most competitive. More than 1,100 attended a screening last week at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill. About 500 saw it at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan in November. It has been shown to a roomful of fathers at Pixar during lunch hour and twice to employees at the Silicon Valley headquarters of Google. All 325 seats in the auditorium of New Canaan Country School in Connecticut were filled during a screening for parents last Thursday night. Francie Irvine, the assistant head of school, said, “Our parents’ association president called me and said, ‘My sister just saw this in California and we have to, have to, have to have it here.’ ” The film portrays the pressures when schools pile on hours of homework and coaches turn sports into year-round obligations. Left somewhat unexamined is the role of parents whose high expectations contribute the most pressure of all. “Everyone expects us to be superheroes,” one high school senior in the film says. Another tells of borrowing her friends’ prescription for Adderall to juggle her many commitments. “It’s hard to be the vice president of your class, play on the soccer team and do homework,” she says. The movie introduces boys who drop out of high school from the pressure, girls who suffer stress-induced insomnia and worse, and students for whom “cheating has become another course,” as one puts it. “When success is defined by high grades, test scores, trophies,”’ a child psychologist says in the film, “we know that we end up with unprepared, disengaged, exhausted and ultimately unhealthy kids.” Vicki Abeles, the middle-aged mother and first-time filmmaker who made “Race to Nowhere,” picked up a camera when a doctor said that her then-12-year-old daughter’s stomachaches were being caused by stress from school. “I was determined to find out how we had gotten to a place where our family had so little time together,” she explains in the film, which has an unslick, home-video quality, “where our kids were physically sick because of the pressures they were under.” In many ways, the movie is the alter ego to the better-known “Waiting for Superman,” another education documentary playing around the country this fall. That film has earned $6.3 million at the box office since its release and ranks 20th among the most successful documentaries ever, according to Box Office Mojo, in no small part because of a blast of publicity. The director appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and President Obama greeted its stars at the White House. “Race to Nowhere” had a one-week run in two theaters, in New York and Los Angeles, but it has primarily been screened by community groups in school auditoriums, churches and temples. Local sponsors like parent-teacher associations sell tickets and split the take with the filmmakers. Ms. Abeles, a corporate lawyer who briefly traded on the gold desk at Goldman Sachs before moving to Northern California with her family, said the film cost her and other backers in the “mid-six figures.” It will have been shown at some 700 locations through February. With her movie’s grass-roots success, Ms. Abeles has been approached by major distributors offering to place it in commercial theaters. But she is not convinced that the movie would reach as wide an audience or inspire viewers to stay for the discussions, which are moderated by principals, child psychologists and sometimes Ms. Abeles herself. The film’s Web site encourages viewers to follow up with local activism (and also links to research and studies supporting the film, which pretty much avoids citing any data). “My passion is around the change this film has the potential to create,” Ms. Abeles said. Complaint of the day!

In one sentence, make a complaint, like you are complaining (or whining) to the person that can change it. It'll feel good to get it off your chest, even if it is something small.

Here's one I know has probably NEVER been complained about before....... Dear House, will you please either clean yourself or start throwing things at the people who defile you?! Oh, but not me. You can't throw things at me because I've been picking you up for years!! I've earned the right to defile you if I want to!

A PRODUCT I LOVE.... and need! I love to cook, but I am often in a rush and manage to burn myself in the kitchen. Anyhow, many years ago, after a pretty bad burn on a holiday, I called my sister-in-law who is an RN and happens to live across the street. She came over with this cream.  It's a script.  It worked so well in reducing the pain and aiding the healing process that I asked her how you get this cream at home.  She told me that you have to ask your doctor for it.  Some doctors are nervous about giving it out as they think you might not go to the hospital if you get a bad burn.  I had to convince my doc that I would use it only on minor burns and he was fine with it.  Many years later and a new doctor, I needed a refill.  When I was about to explain why I think I need a script for this, he stopped me and said "I think every household should keep this on hand."   If you are at all like me or my daughter, get your doc to give you the script.  The next time someone in your house needs it, you will be so glad you did. How this cream works.......it  helps heal much faster.    Makes the burn skip that bad blistering, wet, slick stage.  You don't have to keep the burn covered as long which is better for the healing also. I'm not talking 3 rd degree burns here. But even if I got one that bad, I'd slather this on before I run to the ER!   I hope you know when you should go to the hospital for a burn! This script however, can make your life much better if you or your kids burn themselves at home!

    Just Saying No

How many of you find it hard to say no your kids and if you say no, this is the bigger one how many find it hard to stick with it? My bark ends louder than my bite. I sound tough sometimes and end up backing down. Consistency in parenting is something I have learned is important but it't not always easy. Any one feel the same way?

1 in 4 would pay the price for a great body The choice: A great body or a million bucks? About a fourth of Americans would rather have a dream body for the rest of their lives than win $1 million in the lottery, according to a new poll of 1,000 adults. And almost half say if they were granted a single wish, they'd rather be at their ideal weight than be five years younger. "A dream body is almost a two-fer. If you are at an ideal weight you'll not only look great but you'll probably live longer," says Bruce Daggy, vice president of research and development for Nutrisystem, which sponsored the survey. "We know that a healthy weight is associated with healthy aging." Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian in New York City and nutrition blogger on food.usatoday.com, says, "Many people wish they could have a better body without realizing that the power is in their hands the hands that lift their forks. I've been counseling people for decades who wish they could be as thin as their friends, but they fail to realize that their friends are not eating large portions or multiple snacks during the day." Currently about 66% of people in the U.S. are overweight or obese, which puts them at a greater risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases. Other findings from the poll, conducted by Kelton Research for the diet company: •When they gain weight, about half of people say they have less energy; a fourth have more stress. •When they are trying to lose weight, more than half of dieters say they compare themselves to someone else, often friends, co-workers, siblings or celebrities. • About a quarter of women say that Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry have the kind of bodies they want; almost half of men say they'd like Matthew McConaughey's bod. •First Lady Michelle Obama has the best arms of any famous female; actor Vin Diesel is the male celebrity with the best arms.
