Back to School with Kleenex!
Kleenex® understands the importance of hands-on learning. That's why TheMotherhood and five top mom bloggers (and their almost-kindergartners!) are visiting award-winning teacher Patrice McCrary in her classroom in Bowling Green, KY! We're learning tips and tricks and getting lots of great back-to-school information. Check back to hear all about the trip, back-to-school tips and to share what you know!
LATEST POSTED BY: RobynsWorldThis looks like you all had so much fun! Makes me want another little one so I can go through the whole process again. I just dropped my son off for his 1st day at high school - he still looked so tiny going into that big school, just like he did in kindergarten. Oh - and for those of you with older kids like mine who don't get school lists, remember that the teachers would still love to get things like boxes of Kleenex for their classrooms!ViewAugust.27th.2010

LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SCES: 10 Over-Hyped Gadgets SmartMoney.com - Senior consumer reporter and "Deal of Day" columnist Kelli B. Grant traveled booth to booth at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to find the best, the worst, and the most-hyped gadgets and gizmos. Read her dispatches at Pay Dirt. One will weigh your baby and send each reading to a linked smartphone app. Another is supposed to alert dog owners via text message when Spike escapes the yard. And then there's the Solowheel -- which is essentially a battery-powered unicycle that retails for a whopping $1,800. This week, as thousands poured into the Las Vegas Convention Center for the Consumer Electronics Show, Americans got a glimpse of the not-too-distant future. But they also got a peek at a lot of products that critics say may never see the light of day, or have some other quirks. Here are ten that may fit that category. Raising our Kids & a Garden Too
Welcome to The Motherhood Community Garden! Every year I learn a little more about gardening. Would love to connect with other moms who also like to dig in the dirt and make things grow.
LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SFirst Lady writes book on edible gardening Washington (CNN) – First lady, wife, mother, careerist, fashionista - Michelle Obama can now add "author" to her list of credentials. Obama has written a book that highlights one of her most visible initiatives as first lady: promoting better nutrition and edible gardening as a means for Americans to get and stay healthy. "American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools, and Communities" aims to explore "how increased access to healthy, affordable food can promote better eating habits and improve the health of families and communities across America," according to a press release issued Monday by the Crown Publishing Group. "Mrs. Obama will describe how her daughters Sasha and Malia were catalysts for change in her own family's eating behavior, which inspired Mrs. Obama to plant an edible garden on the South Lawn - the first since Eleanor Roosevelt's "Victory Garden," planted during World War II." The first lady did not accept an advance for the book and will donate all proceeds to a charity to be revealed later, the statement says. Random House Inc., Crown Publishing Group's parent, will also make a donation to a charity. The book will be on sale nationwide starting April 10. For better and FOR WORSE! Mom's committed to staying married!
NOW I am not talking about crazy, scary men here, drug addicts or abusers......I am talking about Fred and Joe and Bill who sit on the couch too much, Play Mafia Wars instead of mowing the grass, take forever to finish painting the gutters, leaves stinky socks in the front room and then COMPLAIN they don't have any clean ones (cough cough) and just as your getting older and feeling vulnerable, he compeletly forgets to make you feel beautiful. Or pretty, or at least not haggy! Sigh..... you're in this marriage for the long haul...matter of fact you know no one else would put up with his kids and besides he had a hand in these stretch marks from those kids and well, and you already have put in 15-20 years but hey still to stay sane, you need a place to VENT snivel and and ask for support! You just need moms like you raising kids and still wanting to be part of a couple! I think behind every good marriage is a woman who listens and supports the wife!!
LATEST POSTED BY: Erin OThis made me tear up a little. ---- Couple married 72 years dies holding hands 'Neither one of them would've wanted to be without each other' DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa couple who was married for 72 years died one hour apart last week in the hospital as they held hands. Family said the story of Gordon and Norma Yeager is a real-life love story. On the day she graduated from high school, Norma Stock said yes to Gordon Yeager's marriage proposal. The couple got married on May 26, 1939 in State Center. "They're very old-fashioned. They believed in marriage til death do you part," said son Dennis Yeager. Dennis Yeager was the youngest of four children born to the couple. His sister Donna was first born. "Staying together for 72 years is good, I'd say that's exceptional," said Donna Sheets. The way the kids tell it, dad was the life of the party while mom kept everything together. "Anybody come over -- she was the hostess with the mostess. She just seriously -- the more she did -- the more she smiled," said Dennis Yeager. "Dad would be the center of attention, like, 'Weee look at me,' and mom was like 'get him away from me!' You know we even got a picture like that." Norma didn't really want the distance, and family said she hardly left Gordon's side for 72 years. "They just loved being together. Everybody argues once in awhile, but they still, he said 'I have to stick around. I can't go until she does because I have to stay here for her and she would say the same thing,'" said Dennis Yeager. Dennis Yeager said the couple left home last Wednesday to go into town, but they didn't make it. At the intersection of Highway 30 and Jessup Avenue just west of Marshalltown, state troopers said Gordon pulled in front of an oncoming car. "I rushed from Des Moines where I was working and saw them in the hospital," said Dennis Yeager. In the intensive care unit of Marshalltown's hospital, nurses knew not to separate Gordon and Norma. "They brought them in the same room in intensive care and put them together -- and they were holding hands in ICU. They were not really responsive," said Dennis Yeager. Gordon died at 3:38 p.m. holding hands with his wife as the family they built surrounded them. "It was really strange, they were holding hands, and dad stopped breathing but I couldn't figure out what was going on because the heart monitor was still going," said Dennis Yeager. "But we were like, he isn't breathing. How does he still have a heart beat? The nurse checked and said that's because they were holding hands and it's going through them. Her heart was beating through him and picking it up." "They were still getting her heartbeat through him," said Donna Sheets. At 4:48 p.m., exactly one hour after Gordon died, Norma passed too. "Neither one of them would've wanted to be without each other. I couldn't figure out how it was going to work," said Donna Sheets. "We were very blessed, honestly, that they went this way." "They just loved being together," said Dennis Yeager. At their funeral on Tuesday, Norma and Gordon held hands in their casket. Family said they will be cremated and their ashes mixed together. All about Apps!
I'm an iphone/ipad addict and I'm constantly looking for new apps. Share your favorite, your not so favorite, or cool app finds here - iphone, ipad, etc.!
LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SNew wave of location-based apps mark a 'paradigm shift' (CNN) -- As location-based apps go, Foursquare or Gowalla will work just fine if you're looking for the spot where all your buddies are having a beer. But what if they discovered an awesome, out-of-the-way spot six months ago? Or, better yet, what if you didn't even know you were looking for a watering hole until your phone told you there's one around the corner you shouldn't miss? As the novelty of the simple check-in fades, and the abilities of GPS-based location technology expand, some new mobile apps -- call them "discovery apps" -- are looking to parlay mobile "noise" into useful, place-based tips. "It feels like the paradigm shift in the late '90s when Google came along," said Babak Pahlavan, CEO of Cleversense, which released the app Alfred this month. "There's an information overload -- to find something useful for you is a very daunting task. It's time for a new shift; it's time to make sense of it and make it useful for you." Alfred has been called "Pandora for the real world." Users feed it information about their favorite places (mainly restaurants, bars and coffee shops). Then, theoretically, Alfred -- a mustachioed robot butler -- can suggest similar spots that are nearby, no matter where you are. The free app, currently on Apple's iOS system, with Android and Windows Phone versions in the works, was rolled out this month and took top honors in the "Startup Idol" contest at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colorado. The app, which was two years in the making, uses a Web-crawling algorithm to pull the information together and, according to Pahlavan, recognized the difference between positive and negative chatter about a place. LATEST POSTED BY: Deborah15 Ways to Eat Healthy Without Breaking the Bank.... I am very committed to eating really healthfully and feeding my family as much nutritious food as possible. Many people complain to me that they can’t buy fresh, organic food because it’s too expensive. It’s interesting to me that 100 years ago we spent twenty-five percent of our disposable income on food and now we only spend ten percent. Furthermore, we’re actually consuming more food than before, while getting fatter and sicker. But I do think we’re starting to make the connection that we have a lot of cheap food in this country, and that cheap food has hidden costs—to our physical bodies, as well as the environment. LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SGoogle search undergoes 'most radical transformation ever' (CNN) -- Google search is about to get way more personal. In a change that's been called the "most radical transformation ever" to Google's search engine, the Mountain View, California, company on Tuesday announced an update called "Search, plus Your World," which causes Google's robots to incorporate data from its social network as well as the public Internet when delivering search results to people. "Search is pretty amazing at finding that one needle in a haystack of billions of Web pages, images, videos, news and much more," Google said in a blog post on Tuesday morning. "But clearly, that isn't enough. You should also be able to find your own stuff on the Web, the people you know and things they've shared with you, as well as the people you don't know but might want to ... all from one search box." The company added: "Search is simply better with your world in it." On the prominent blog Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan writes that the updates fundamentally change the way Google's search engine functions, calling it the "most radical" change ever. "The new system will perhaps make life much easier for some people, allowing them to find both privately shared content from friends and family plus material from across the Web through a single search, rather than having to search twice using two different systems," he writes. "However, Search Plus Your World may cause some privacy worries, as private content may appear as if it is exposed publicly (it is not). It might also cause concern by making private content more visible to friends and family than those sharing may have initially intended." LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SThis is a GREAT article about yoga studios in Pittsburgh. If you ever think about going to a class, I HIGHLY recommend Amazing Yoga. It's a fantastic place and as you can see from the article, they're only going to get better... THE EVOLVING ROLE OF YOGA STUDIOS Today, it seems there are more yoga studios than coffee shops. On a block here in Pittsburgh the scoreboard reads: Coffee shops 3 Yoga studios 4 and 1 (with a lowercase “l”) lululemon. Is this a good thing, a great thing?….Of course it’s good, great. One style, one teacher, one studio will never connect with every student. Given our beautiful uniqueness, yogis need options. (If only the yoga world would set aside its’ ridiculous my style is better than your style wars. Isn’t yoga suppose to be a unifier?? but I digress and that’s a topic for another day…) The bottom line is this: the more yoga the better. “Yoga Journal” estimates that 15 million folks in the US practice yoga. According to YogaFinder, there are some 12,000 yoga studios and that number is still growing. When we opened Amazing Yoga in 2000, we were only the 2nd studio in Pittsburgh—now there are at least thirty. This growth is fantastic: more people are taking care of themselves. The question is this: Is all this yoga making an impact in the world? I hope so. I’d like to think it has. All these yoga studios and yoga students seem like a golden opportunity to make a positive change in the world. But to be honest, I think we are under-performing, not yet realizing our potential: Yoga studios, teachers and students alike, need to stretch beyond their studio walls. Stretch more than their hamstrings and groins. The stretching needs to evolve into reaching, as in community out-reach. So what is the role of a yoga studio, in the local community, in the global community? Find out by reading the full article: http://www.elephantjournal.com/2011/02/the-evolving-role-of-yoga-studios/ViewFebruary.17th.2011
