Life According to the Crock Pot
Every few days I secretly change the "quotation" magnet message on our crock pot. It has made a mark on our family in ways I never thought it could. Here is a real time account of life lessons as learned by our Quote-on-a-Crock-Pot experiment. How do you talk about "life lessons" in different ways in your house?

Shortcuts to Dinner
We all want to feed our families great meals. We all want to save money, and be healthy. But sometimes, you just don't feel like cooking. This circle is devoted to shopping wisely and planning ahead so that a good meal can be ready quickly when you need it to be.
LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SInstant-read thermometer a must have USAToday.com - What's the best present to give the cook who has everything? The one thing they don't have, and the one thing both chefs and food safety experts say they desperately need — an instant-read thermometer. "It's something you can be pretty sure most people don't own, or if they do own one, they don't own a very good one," says Jack Bishop of America's Test Kitchen, a popular cooking show on PBS. Old-fashioned meat thermometers rely on metal actually expanding and turning the temperature dial. Digital instant-read thermometers use electronics and are faster and generally more accurate. The instant-read digitals use slightly different technology than a regular digital thermometer, so be sure to look for ones that say they are instant-read. Older dial thermometers take "forever" to register the temperature, says Bishop. And they're not always accurate. But a quick-read thermometer can make your food taste better and help you avoid killing your guests from a food-borne illness. Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, has "a drawerful" of food thermometers because they're always being handed out at conferences she attends. One night she decided to test them all "and the only one that gave me a meaningful reading was the instant-read," she says. Asked if she actually uses them, she says "of course I do. The other night for dinner we were making New Orleans Cajun Whiskey Sauce for bread pudding, so we had to make sure it got up to 160" to kill any possible salmonella in the egg yolks. Out came the thermometer and the dinner party finished with a flourish and no worries that anyone would end up in the hospital. The thermometers, costing anywhere from $20 to $89, pay for themselves, says Bishop. "If you buy a 50 lb. roast for the holidays, do you really want to overcook it?" he asks. LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla S5 real, fast, delicious meals from around the U.S. Eatocracy - Rachael Ray, Robin Miller and Martha Stewart all whip up some quick-and-easy meals on TV, but for those of us who aren’t gifted in the culinary sense, they might not be that simple. Well folks, CNN iReport has answered your cooking prayers. We’ve collected real recipes from real people as part of the cultural census for CNN's Defining America. For each night of the busy workweek, we’ve selected five fast, delicious meals that won’t eat up too much time or leave you scratching your head. Arturo Navarro of Chula Vista, California, can make a meal of scrumptious salmon, brown rice, and spinach salad in 15 minutes flat. The salmon cooks in virgin olive oil for three minutes on each side. In the meantime, he washes and prepares the spinach, tomato, bell pepper, and avocado salad – a favorite he makes a few times a week. “I’ve changed my diet since last May, so I’ve been eating salmon; better nutrition than what I ate before,” he said. He now prepares fresh meals each day. Michelle Chu’s typical weekday dinners usually consist of a protein, veggies and of course, dessert! She and her boyfriend, who live in Richmond, Virginia, recently visited Omaha Steaks for the first time and were sold on the tender meat. “It’s something we eat frequently because it’s filling, easy to prepare and tastes great.” Chu’s meal of steak, asparagus and whipped sweet potatoes took about 30 minutes from start to finish. And, she ended the meal on a sweet note – angel food cake drizzled with raspberries and Biscoff spread. Are we in heaven yet? LATEST POSTED BY: EmilyWhen Cooper and I started blogging in 2004, we had no idea what was coming.
Seriously, who could have imagined the mind-blowingly creative ways that we would all would use the web to make our lives better?!
Down the road, I have no doubt we’ll look back on these days and say, “That’s when it all changed.”
I was thinking about that idea – that we’re living in this incredible time in history when our lives are changing in so many ways for the good - when ONE asked me to blog about their 12 Days of Change Campaign and to focus in particular on Living Proof.
Here’s the connection. We never imagined our lives could change so much so quickly, and across the ocean, vast improvements are happening in Africa that would have been inconceivable a decade ago.
Just this week, the cover story in the Economist is “Africa Rising: The Hopeful Continent.”
Africa … The Hopeful Continent.
Not many people (aside from the ONE Campaign) would have said that about Africa ten years ago.
Yet, “in eight of the past ten years, Africa has grown faster than East Asia, including Japan,” according to the Economist. “Africa now has the fastest growing middle class in the world.”
The health of millions has improved.
In a Living Proof video, Melinda Gates says that 3 million people are now receiving antiretroviral drugs to control HIV/AIDS. That includes a lot of moms who are staying alive and can now raise their children and do all the things that moms do to make things better for their families and neighbors.
We really might see a healthy, prosperous Africa in our lifetimes.
And that’s what the Living Proof Project is showing us - the stories of the incredible progress being made by some of the world’s poorest people.
In the spirit of the holidays, join us today to share and marvel at what’s been made possible in our lives and in the lives of Africans.
Today’s 12 Days of Change action is super easy: Share Living Proof with your friends!!!
Use Facebook, Twitter and the blogs to talk about Living Proof and share a video, a ONE PSA, a story or fact about smart and effective aid that is working in Africa.
Here’s a tweet if you’d like:

Living Your {DREAM}
A circle of moms who want to acheive the ultimate life-- living your dream in every way-- personal life, home life and work life... I think it's possible...who's with me? Come here for inspiration!
LATEST POSTED BY: gottalovemomIt seems like there are so many things we want to accomplish. We are always multi-tasking. Our to-do and bucket lists keep on growing.
We look at our lists and we say, “How am I going to accomplish any of these tasks at all? Who has the time”
What about doing something just for fun? Does not have to be elaborate. Just one thing that will make you smile.
So pick one, focus on it, and make an effort to do it every day – until it becomes a habit that makes you smile and you laugh out loud: Live life, one simple step at a time.
Fun for me involves art.
Art is a big part of my life. I am happy when I'm doing something creative. I love music but I didn't get a chance to be really good at it, unlike my 4 children who play the guitar, piano and violin. I love listening to them -- or just listening to Lady Gaga's "Free as my Hair" song.
There’s a song that I started learning how to play. I haven’t played the piano in decades. My hands are stiff, and my eyes couldn’t see the notes as clearly as I did when I was younger – but those are just excuses.
I learned that if you really want something, you’ll find ways to make time.

Happy New Year!
Everyone is all buzzing about Christmas, but what about New Year's Eve? This group is for everything New Year's. What are your plans? Resolutions? What are you looking forward to in 2011? Share it all here!
LATEST POSTED BY: Erin OThe 'Janopause' Detox Debate A growing number of realists have given themselves an easier 2012 resolution. Coined the 'Janopause' by the Daily Mail, it requires just one month of abstention. But does it do any good? New Year’s Day is fairly predictable: Americans everywhere struggle awake with equal parts hangover and self-loathing. Overindulging in ginger cookies and champagne toasts is, after all, the raison d’être of the holiday season. We may careen down a shame spiral afterward, but—in the moment—we still reach for yet another mug of bourbon-spiked hot apple cider. Then in rolls January, the month of promises, easily made and quickly broken. New Year’s resolutions have become a cliché of failed resolve, the stuff of corny sitcom jokes about uninspired weight-loss attempts (light beer!) and unused gym memberships. Statistics aren’t consistent, but the odds of satisfying a yearlong resolution are consistently bleak. “There’s a tremendous spike in users—double—on our site’s calorie tracker for the first two weeks of January,” notes Adam Bornstein, editorial director of the health website Livestrong.com. “By the third week, studies show a 33 percent drop-off in resolutions.” Turns out giving up anything for a year is difficult—otherwise people who abstain from producing garbage, spending money, or eating vegetables wouldn’t get book deals. Across the pond, the Christmastime indulgence is worse. According to The Guardian, a recent survey of Western countries showed Britain as the nation with the highest spike in alcohol consumption during the holidays—a whopping increase of 41 percent. Which is perhaps why a trend has percolated from England across the globe, coined the “Janopause” (or “Drynuary,” take your pick) by the Daily Mail. No, it is not the hot-flash-inducing disorder it sounds like, but rather an abstinence from drinking for the month of January. The ritual has long been practiced in the U.K., but the widespread popularity of detoxes in general has now elevated it to a mainstream fad the world over. Gifted Children
This is a place for parents of academically advanced children to find resources and support.
LATEST POSTED BY: NettazigHow do you know if your child, especially a toddler, shows signs of being gifted? My 25 month old has known his whole alphabet for a while, can count from 1-10 forwards and backwards, knows colors and pretty much all shapes, even ones that aren't "typical" (like octagon, rectangle, oval). And just recently, he's started identifying states on a map....I think he is up to 40 or so now, in just a couple of weeks. It almost seems like he doesn't forget a thing, and remembers a lot of things from the first time he learns them....starting to wonder if he might have somewhat of photographic memory! Are there any resources for how to raise a child you think might be gifted? He seems to love to learn constantly, and I'm not sure what kinds of things to introduce to him next....I don't want him getting bored or start to feel I'm shoving anything on him. I prefer for him to learn new things through play, rather than rote, so info geared in that direction would be great. Thanks in advance!ViewJanuary.19th.2011

Remodeling industry sentiment, as tracked by the National Association of Home Builders' Remodeling Market Index (RMI), hit a five-year high in the fourth quarter. We Heart Tomatoes!
ConAgra recently presented some impressive research results at the American Dietetic Association's Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, suggesting that the nutrients in tomatoes may have a measurable impact on heart disease prevention. Using Hunt’s tomatoes is a great way to get a significant source of fiber, Vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene into your diet. In fact, according to a study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lycopene absorption is two to three times greater in canned tomato products than raw tomatoes. Also, Hunt’s tomatoes are flash-steamed to help them keep their backyard-garden-fresh taste, are 100% natural and contain no artificial preservatives or ingredients.

LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla SGoogle search undergoes 'most radical transformation ever' (CNN) -- Google search is about to get way more personal. In a change that's been called the "most radical transformation ever" to Google's search engine, the Mountain View, California, company on Tuesday announced an update called "Search, plus Your World," which causes Google's robots to incorporate data from its social network as well as the public Internet when delivering search results to people. "Search is pretty amazing at finding that one needle in a haystack of billions of Web pages, images, videos, news and much more," Google said in a blog post on Tuesday morning. "But clearly, that isn't enough. You should also be able to find your own stuff on the Web, the people you know and things they've shared with you, as well as the people you don't know but might want to ... all from one search box." The company added: "Search is simply better with your world in it." On the prominent blog Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan writes that the updates fundamentally change the way Google's search engine functions, calling it the "most radical" change ever. "The new system will perhaps make life much easier for some people, allowing them to find both privately shared content from friends and family plus material from across the Web through a single search, rather than having to search twice using two different systems," he writes. "However, Search Plus Your World may cause some privacy worries, as private content may appear as if it is exposed publicly (it is not). It might also cause concern by making private content more visible to friends and family than those sharing may have initially intended."
