LATEST POSTED BY: EmilyWhen Cooper and I started blogging in 2004, we had no idea what was coming.
Seriously, who could have imagined the mind-blowingly creative ways that we would all would use the web to make our lives better?!
Down the road, I have no doubt we’ll look back on these days and say, “That’s when it all changed.”
I was thinking about that idea – that we’re living in this incredible time in history when our lives are changing in so many ways for the good - when ONE asked me to blog about their 12 Days of Change Campaign and to focus in particular on Living Proof.
Here’s the connection. We never imagined our lives could change so much so quickly, and across the ocean, vast improvements are happening in Africa that would have been inconceivable a decade ago.
Just this week, the cover story in the Economist is “Africa Rising: The Hopeful Continent.”
Africa … The Hopeful Continent.
Not many people (aside from the ONE Campaign) would have said that about Africa ten years ago.
Yet, “in eight of the past ten years, Africa has grown faster than East Asia, including Japan,” according to the Economist. “Africa now has the fastest growing middle class in the world.”
The health of millions has improved.
In a Living Proof video, Melinda Gates says that 3 million people are now receiving antiretroviral drugs to control HIV/AIDS. That includes a lot of moms who are staying alive and can now raise their children and do all the things that moms do to make things better for their families and neighbors.
We really might see a healthy, prosperous Africa in our lifetimes.
And that’s what the Living Proof Project is showing us - the stories of the incredible progress being made by some of the world’s poorest people.
In the spirit of the holidays, join us today to share and marvel at what’s been made possible in our lives and in the lives of Africans.
Today’s 12 Days of Change action is super easy: Share Living Proof with your friends!!!
Use Facebook, Twitter and the blogs to talk about Living Proof and share a video, a ONE PSA, a story or fact about smart and effective aid that is working in Africa.
Here’s a tweet if you’d like:

LATEST POSTED BY: Erin ODo you get flu shots every year? __ Time for flu shots, and some may get a tiny needle WASHINGTON – It's flu vaccine time again — and some lucky shot-seekers will find that the needle has shrunk. The first flu shot that works with a less-scary skin prick instead of an inch-long needle is hitting the market this fall. Sorry kids, this option so far is just for adults, and it's so brand-new that it will take some searching to find a dose. But there are plenty of the other varieties — standard shots, a special high-dose shot for seniors and the needle-free squirt-in-the-nose option — to go around. At least 166 million doses of flu vaccine are expected to be produced this year. The big question is whether people will get it. Usually each year's flu vaccine varies from the previous versions as different influenza strains emerge. This year, the vaccine's a duplicate because the three flu strains that sickened people last winter still are circulating. Scientific studies aren't clear about how much a person's immunity wanes over a year, although it varies by age and overall health. But federal health officials and the American Academy of Pediatrics weighed the evidence and say don't skip this year's vaccination — it's the only way to be sure your immune system remains revved enough for the best protection. "You're not going to be able to count on that vaccine protecting you throughout a second season," says Dr. Lisa Grohskopf of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A yearly vaccination now is recommended for virtually everyone, except babies younger than 6 months and people with severe allergies to the eggs used to make it. Last year, 49 percent of children and 41 percent of adults were vaccinated. LATEST POSTED BY: Erin OMany of these mistakes are my pet peeves!!! ____ 7 Spelling and Grammar Errors that Make You Look Dumb Don’t let these easy-to-fix spelling and grammar mistakes make you look unprofessional. By: Leslie Ayres, The Real Job Search Guru Many brilliant people have some communication weak spots. Unfortunately, the reality is that written communication is a big part of business, and how you write reflects on you. Poor spelling and grammar can destroy a professional image in an instant. Even if your job doesn't require much business writing, you'll still have emails to send and notes to write. And if you're looking for a job, your cover letters and resumes will likely mean the difference between getting the interview or not. Bad grammar and spelling make a bad impression. Don't let yourself lose an opportunity over a simple spelling or grammar mistake. Here are seven simple grammatical errors that I see consistently in emails, cover letters and resumes. Tip: Make yourself a little card cheat sheet and keep it in your wallet for easy reference. You're / Your The apostrophe means it's a contraction of two words; "you're" is the short version of "you are" (the "a" is dropped), so if your sentence makes sense if you say "you are," then you're good to use you're. "Your" means it belongs to you, it's yours. * You're = if you mean "you are" then use the apostrophe * Your = belonging to you You're going to love your new job! It's / Its This one is confusing, because generally, in addition to being used in contractions, an apostrophe indicates ownership, as in "Dad's new car." But, "it's" is actually the short version of "it is" or "it has." "Its" with no apostrophe means belonging to it. * It's = it is * Its = belonging to it It's important to remember to bring your telephone and its extra battery. They're / Their / There "They're" is a contraction of "they are." "Their" means belonging to them. "There" refers to a place (notice that the word "here" is part of it, which is also a place – so if it says here and there, it's a place). There = a place * They're = they are * Their = belonging to them They're going to miss their teachers when they leave there. Loose / Lose These spellings really don't make much sense, so you just have to remember them. "Loose" is the opposite of tight, and rhymes with goose. "Lose" is the opposite of win, and rhymes with booze. (To show how unpredictable English is, compare another pair of words, "choose" and "chose," which are spelled the same except the initial sound, but pronounced differently. No wonder so many people get it wrong!) * Loose = it's not tight, it's loosey goosey * Lose= "don't lose the hose for the rose" is a way to remember the same spelling but a different pronunciation I never thought I could lose so much weight; now my pants are all loose! Lead / Led Another common but glaring error. "Lead" means you're doing it in the present, and rhymes with deed. "Led" is the past tense of lead, and rhymes with sled. So you can "lead" your current organization, but you "led" the people in your previous job. * Lead = present tense, rhymes with deed * Led = past tense, rhymes with sled My goal is to lead this team to success, just as I led my past teams into winning award after award. A lot / Alot / Allot First the bad news: there is no such word as "alot." "A lot" refers to quantity, and "allot" means to distribute or parcel out. There is a lot of confusion about this one, so I'm going to allot ten minutes to review these rules of grammar. Between you and I This one is widely misused, even by TV news anchors who should know better. In English, we use a different pronoun depending on whether it's the subject or the object of the sentence: I/me, she/her, he/him, they/them. This becomes second nature for us and we rarely make mistakes with the glaring exception of when we have to choose between "you and I" or "you and me." Grammar Girl does a far better job of explaining this than I, but suffice to say that "between you and I" is never correct, and although it is becoming more common, it's kind of like saying "him did a great job." It is glaringly incorrect. The easy rule of thumb is to replace the "you and I" or "you and me" with either "we" or "us" and you'll quickly see which form is right. If "us" works, then use "you and me" and if "we" works, then use "you and I." Between you and me (us), here are the secrets to how you and I (we) can learn to write better. Master these common errors and you'll remove some of the mistakes and red flags that make you look like you have no idea how to speak. Marc Pritchard from P&G shared his vision for the home, "A place to gather, celebrate, relax, have some fun and enjoy the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games experience together as a family.” And believe me, the athletes like Noelle Pikus-Pace are going to love recharging their batteries here. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vm-cdxDSxz0/S3Xac3EF7fI/AAAAAAAAHCM/Vq0nGLLQal8/s1600-h/477_4916.JPG Noelle was generous enough to chat with me at the Family Home opening. The http://www.nbcolympics.com/photos/galleryid=262313.html had lively red and blue streaks in her hair and was simply bursting with energy and enthusiasm. Her daughter and husband were set to arrive soon and she said this experience is a "family dream." Noelle told me husband works full-time so she can train and plans to make the most of these Olympic Winter Games. Noelle told me the being here was the "best opportunity." I took a moment to ask Noelle about the P&G Thanks Mom campaign and what her mom did to help her achieve her goals. "My mom is my hero--she took of hours and hours of work to help me and always believed in me." Nabbing time with this mom, was such a treat and I was moved to see her basking in the spotlight. Watch her compete on the 18th and 19th. Athletes like Pikus-Pace, Jeret Peterson and speed skater Chad Hedrick gathered to celebrate the home and the inspiration behind the home--all the moms that made it possible for these athletes to achieve greatness. P&G rolled out the two commercials that will début tonight (and believe me you'll want to have your hankies ready--these are emotionally packed ads!). As Pritchard shared the all the details of the P&G campaign, he shared the spotlight and the stage with Jenny Chu's mom, Miriam, and gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. One special detail of the evening was P&G efforts to bring families together in Vancouver. The P&G team offered athletes up to $3000 to fly and house their families here in Canada. This is an amazing offer for athletes that have had to scrimp and save for training and equipment. Several athletes were moved to tears at this generous gesture. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vm-cdxDSxz0/S3XG_3thveI/AAAAAAAAHB8/MKMgMCmy3mA/s1600-h/477_4848.JPG After athlete photos, I got a grand tour. The multi-story home is centrally located in downtown Vancouver. Within the home are experiences designed to take the pressure off for a little bit of time. There's a cyber lounge with free wifi, an incredible Pringles snack bar with more than two dozen flavors, and that's just on the first two floors. From there you head to the Tide Laundry Lounge. That's where athletes can drop off laundry and pick it up clean and folded the next day. Tots will adore the Pampers Village packed with toys, a diaper changing station and tons of the new Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers Diapers with Dry Max. Crest had a cool interactive photo session (I'll post my virtual speed skating image soon), but this mom loved the top floor. It was packed with all the beauty supplies this mom uses and loves. More on that soon! http://thankyoumom.com/ will be the online place to check out the action.ViewFebruary.14th.2010
