Kids, Meds and Mental Health with Judith Warner

The Washington Post described Judith Warner's book, "We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication," this way: "Nowhere did Warner encounter mothers or fathers eager to medicate healthy kids for trivial reasons. Instead, she found parents struggling to find and afford decent treatment for children disabled by their symptoms or their behavior, parents who had turned to psychiatric medicines only out of desperation -- and a society that persists in stigmatizing mental illness, blames parents when kids are affected, and has done far too little to ensure that such kids can get access to treatments that have been shown to work." Join us for an amazing conversation with Judy about kids, meds and mental health - bring your own stories and experiences for us all to talk, learn and support each other.

Rising allergies, asthma triggered by 'the things we love' USAToday.com - Tara Shafa, 15, of Davie, Fla., is an animal lover. She has lived with cats since she was 5. But in the past six months, what were mild allergy symptoms have gotten worse, causing sneezing, itchy, puffy eyes, and hives. Allergy tests have proven what her family suspected. She's allergic to her three best friends. Allergists speaking at a meeting this week in Boston of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology warned of the potential for some of life's sweetest pleasures — a glass of wine, a beautifully scented room, the unconditional love of a pet — to set off fits of sneezing, coughing, hives and even serious asthma attacks. An estimated 40 million to 50 million Americans suffer from asthma or other allergic diseases, and the incidence is increasing, the group says. Asthma rates alone have more than tripled in 25 years, now affecting more than 22 million people. Reasons are not clear, say experts, but theories include air pollutants, dietary changes and changes in lifestyle. Genes also are a factor, and people who are genetically predisposed to allergies may be encountering more of the triggers, known as allergens, that can set off symptoms. Shortcuts to Dinner

We all want to feed our families great meals. We all want to save money, and be healthy. But sometimes, you just don't feel like cooking. This circle is devoted to shopping wisely and planning ahead so that a good meal can be ready quickly when you need it to be.

Instant-read thermometer a must have USAToday.com - What's the best present to give the cook who has everything? The one thing they don't have, and the one thing both chefs and food safety experts say they desperately need — an instant-read thermometer. "It's something you can be pretty sure most people don't own, or if they do own one, they don't own a very good one," says Jack Bishop of America's Test Kitchen, a popular cooking show on PBS. Old-fashioned meat thermometers rely on metal actually expanding and turning the temperature dial. Digital instant-read thermometers use electronics and are faster and generally more accurate. The instant-read digitals use slightly different technology than a regular digital thermometer, so be sure to look for ones that say they are instant-read. Older dial thermometers take "forever" to register the temperature, says Bishop. And they're not always accurate. But a quick-read thermometer can make your food taste better and help you avoid killing your guests from a food-borne illness. Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, has "a drawerful" of food thermometers because they're always being handed out at conferences she attends. One night she decided to test them all "and the only one that gave me a meaningful reading was the instant-read," she says. Asked if she actually uses them, she says "of course I do. The other night for dinner we were making New Orleans Cajun Whiskey Sauce for bread pudding, so we had to make sure it got up to 160" to kill any possible salmonella in the egg yolks. Out came the thermometer and the dinner party finished with a flourish and no worries that anyone would end up in the hospital. The thermometers, costing anywhere from $20 to $89, pay for themselves, says Bishop. "If you buy a 50 lb. roast for the holidays, do you really want to overcook it?" he asks. We Heart Tomatoes!

ConAgra recently presented some impressive research results at the American Dietetic Association's Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, suggesting that the nutrients in tomatoes may have a measurable impact on heart disease prevention. Using Hunt’s tomatoes is a great way to get a significant source of fiber, Vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene into your diet. In fact, according to a study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lycopene absorption is two to three times greater in canned tomato products than raw tomatoes. Also, Hunt’s tomatoes are flash-steamed to help them keep their backyard-garden-fresh taste, are 100% natural and contain no artificial preservatives or ingredients.

How to make your own wreath Mother Nature Network - If you'd like to make your own wreath for Christmas, there’s a good chance you have an abundance of plant material growing just a few steps from your front door to make a unique sign of the season. Take a look around your yard or garden for the amazing number of plants that make colorful berries in late fall and early winter and for those with foliage in interesting shapes, colors and textures. Here’s an example of some plants to look for: Hollies, especially variegated ones Cypresses, junipers and similar evergreens (look for stems full of berries) Nandina Magnolia trees Pine trees Eucalyptus trees Japanese maples with red or yellow branches Winterberry Native and ornamental grasses Beech trees (the leaves stay brown through winter) Boxwoods And if you want to give your wreath a regional look, choose plants that are native to your part of the country. For example, if you live in the South, what could be more Southern than magnolia leaves? The easiest way to make your own wreath is to buy a wire frame from a garden center with the greenery already attached. If you want to make your own wreath from scratch, arts and crafts stores usually sell bare wire frames. Christmas tree branches, boxwood stems, magnolia leaves and vines are popular base materials. The only equipment you will need to get started is a pair of clippers, thin green florist wire and a little imagination! Moms to Teens (or preteens)

You love them--these little strangers in your house. But now that they are older, you are finding less support online and with websites. Let's figure out these wonderful (and at times difficult) strangers in our house together. Advice, hints, tips or vents. We can handle it.

Study finds 10% of tweens, teens have 'sexted' (CNN) -- "Sexting" -- the practice of taking sexually explicit photos and sending them to peers via cell phones or the Internet -- may be less common among U.S. adolescents than previous research and media reports have suggested, according to a new nationwide study. In contrast to a widely cited 2008 survey in which 20% of teens reported sending or posting sexual pictures of themselves, the new survey -- in a younger group of Internet users, some as young as 10 -- found that only 10% of teens and tweens had done so. And just 1% reported sending or receiving nude or partly nude images. "It's still something that we need to talk to kids about, but not all kids are doing it," says Kimberly J. Mitchell, Ph.D., a study coauthor and a research associate professor of psychology at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham. "It's a bit reassuring, because a lot of the other studies about this have come up with much larger numbers." The new findings, which appear in the January issue of the journal Pediatrics, shouldn't be interpreted to mean that sexting isn't a serious problem, says Amanda Lenhart, a senior research scientist at the Pew Internet & American Life Project, in Washington, D.C. "Even if you look at 1% or 2% of kids in a high school of a thousand kids, that's 10 to 20 kids, and that's plenty of people for whom this is a big issue and for whom this is a troublesome problem in their lives," says Lenhart, who has researched teen sexting but was not involved in the new study. All about Apps!

I'm an iphone/ipad addict and I'm constantly looking for new apps. Share your favorite, your not so favorite, or cool app finds here - iphone, ipad, etc.!

    LATEST POSTED BY: Kayla S
New wave of location-based apps mark a 'paradigm shift' (CNN) -- As location-based apps go, Foursquare or Gowalla will work just fine if you're looking for the spot where all your buddies are having a beer. But what if they discovered an awesome, out-of-the-way spot six months ago? Or, better yet, what if you didn't even know you were looking for a watering hole until your phone told you there's one around the corner you shouldn't miss? As the novelty of the simple check-in fades, and the abilities of GPS-based location technology expand, some new mobile apps -- call them "discovery apps" -- are looking to parlay mobile "noise" into useful, place-based tips. "It feels like the paradigm shift in the late '90s when Google came along," said Babak Pahlavan, CEO of Cleversense, which released the app Alfred this month. "There's an information overload -- to find something useful for you is a very daunting task. It's time for a new shift; it's time to make sense of it and make it useful for you." Alfred has been called "Pandora for the real world." Users feed it information about their favorite places (mainly restaurants, bars and coffee shops). Then, theoretically, Alfred -- a mustachioed robot butler -- can suggest similar spots that are nearby, no matter where you are. The free app, currently on Apple's iOS system, with Android and Windows Phone versions in the works, was rolled out this month and took top honors in the "Startup Idol" contest at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colorado. The app, which was two years in the making, uses a Web-crawling algorithm to pull the information together and, according to Pahlavan, recognized the difference between positive and negative chatter about a place. Google search undergoes 'most radical transformation ever' (CNN) -- Google search is about to get way more personal. In a change that's been called the "most radical transformation ever" to Google's search engine, the Mountain View, California, company on Tuesday announced an update called "Search, plus Your World," which causes Google's robots to incorporate data from its social network as well as the public Internet when delivering search results to people. "Search is pretty amazing at finding that one needle in a haystack of billions of Web pages, images, videos, news and much more," Google said in a blog post on Tuesday morning. "But clearly, that isn't enough. You should also be able to find your own stuff on the Web, the people you know and things they've shared with you, as well as the people you don't know but might want to ... all from one search box." The company added: "Search is simply better with your world in it." On the prominent blog Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan writes that the updates fundamentally change the way Google's search engine functions, calling it the "most radical" change ever. "The new system will perhaps make life much easier for some people, allowing them to find both privately shared content from friends and family plus material from across the Web through a single search, rather than having to search twice using two different systems," he writes. "However, Search Plus Your World may cause some privacy worries, as private content may appear as if it is exposed publicly (it is not). It might also cause concern by making private content more visible to friends and family than those sharing may have initially intended."
