  • ChristopherGav We'd love to hear your comments and questions in this area...it can be confusing.

    • JanelleS In Marion Nestle's book, What to Eat, she has a whole chapter on milk and she discusses how despite our cultural reliance on dairy for building strong bones, we have more osteoporosis and broken bones than other cultures that consume less.

    • Tracie We only buy organic milk, so we know it's safe. My son drinks about half gallon a day. I do get concerned it's too much and will affect his digestive system. But he seems okay with it. He doesn't eat very much, so I am confident in the nutrients he's getting from the milk.

    • Emily I've heard that it's not good for our kids to get all the hormones from drinking lots of milk, but my girls have NO interest in any of the alternatives. Rice milk? Forget it!

    • JanelleS Many people are concerned about synthetic hormones in milk (rBGH), but because of consumer pressure, most major retailers and companies have stopped relying on it. They typically don't label their milk rBGH-free though, because so many have been sued for implying rBGH-free is better.

Unfortunately, the farmers still relying on rBGH are now dumping their milk on schools and institutions like hospitals since individual consumers and retailers don't want it anymore.

    • Brandie I have one child who can't have milk. She's very healthy without it. THe other two kids get some milk, but not much (especially compared to other kids). I'm always amazed at how amazed people are that we dont' drink more milk. Milk has become equated with health in this country. It's almost anti-American to not drink it. I answer a lot of ?'s about why we don't drink much and how can that be good for us and will my kids grow up to be strong. Well, last I checked, kids who have dairy allergies aren't health-compromised because of no milk, ya know?

    • Brandie Emily - maybe you can start by cooking with an alternative milk to limit what they are getting and switch to organic milk for drinking?

    • Brandie And also, when we first switched, I think we bought chocolate rice milk - just to ease the transition for our daughter. Although, she actually pretty much liked it from the start, so we lucked out!
