DrGreene I want to start with an important story in Feeding Baby Green. In the second half of the last century, Konrad Lorenz made his mark by studying a critical window in the imprinting in geese. He learned that there is a sensitive period early in life when key exposures have lasting influence in animals. He described how newly hatched goslings are programmed to follow the first moving objects they see. They quickly become imprinted on this object and will move their little feet fast to keep up with it. This is highly adaptive. Most of the time.

Becki I remember the picture in my college psychology textbook of Lorenz being followed around by the baby birds.

DrGreene If kids are eating plently of fruits, veggies, and whole grains, this is much less important... but in American agriculture over the last 50 years, our factory farming techniques have reduced the nutrients in much produce. Today's produce typically has lower levels of vitamins, minerals, and protein than it used to. Farm practices that build healthy soil, such as organic farming, though, can increase nutrients.

DrGreene Omega 3's? Yes. A typical toddler should be getting 150 mg a day of DHA. In one study, they only got about 19mg! May also need extra calcium, if not getting it from the diet (and most older kids don't).
