juliepippert Okay I admit it: I make up songs to well-known tunes all the time. We all sing along. I will also use this to break up a tense moment, such as those times I am on my last nerve and about to show my kids an example of a volcano outside of Iceland. I have been known to remake Amy Winehouse's Rehab over and over when the kids get into a No phase.
We just love music here. So that's why I think this article is sooooooo cool and interesting (even though it's about fifteen times above my level of composition lol:

Compose your own
"My nine-month old son engages with music in a variety of ways as he moves through his daily life. He listens to music in the background while he focuses on other activities. He moves to music as my wife or I clap his hands and bounce him up and down in time to a song. And he creates music, banging his fists on a piano keyboard to play clusters of high and low notes. As judged by laughs and smiles, he likes all of these activities, but he enjoys creating music the most.
I similarly like to listen to music but enjoy creating it even more. I love to sing a soft lullaby to my son more than playing him a recording. I love to sit at the piano to play a familiar song more than listening to it on the stereo. And more than any of these things, I love to compose music. I love to start with some simple musical ideas and then experiment with them, gradually transforming them into something that captivates my imagination. I love to share this music with performers and audiences and to invite them to make their own sense of it."
It goes on to discuss why we should make our own music and how we can!
Big hat tip to @techmama for pointing me to this!

Brandie I totally make up on my own words too to songs. All. The. Time. Yes, you may feel very sorry for my family. I also have a knack to - no matter what word you say - pull a real song out and sing it that has that word in it. Again - All. The. Time. Some times my husband looks at me with these huge pleading eyes and says "Please. Please. Just stop singing for the next hour."
It might be less annoying if I could, you know, carry a tune ;-)
