From Salon: Why my kids are pop-culture illiterate
As parents who home-school, my wife and I shield our twins from mainstream kids' fare: No Dora, no Barney

Emily More power to them! Maybe some people will disagree on this, but my sense is with all the pop culture options on TV, there are no clear stand-out, must-see shows for kids. Name a show and some kids might have seen it and lots more not. His kids will hardly feel left out, and as the writer said, they're picking up on some pop culture. More time together and more books ... sounds pretty great.

Deborah We were pretty choosy when the boys were little....not so much now. Did it hurt them or help them? Who knows. They never saw Rugrats and they are still breathing. :)

Brandie We don't shield our kids, and we also don't shove it in their faces for the most part. I mean, my kids are all into Star Wars - even the 4yo. I'm okay with that. That siad, they don't know everyone under the sun. I don't think knowing about it hurts them. I don't think not knowing about it hurts them. I think balance is important too. Like he said - some weeks his kids watched more tv and then would go without watching it for several. Describes us perfectly. My kids know Star Wars - have watched them all many times, have a few lego sets. That said, they've never watched or read Twilight. I'm a-okay with that.
I'm all about balance. I don't think there are many things parents can do to screw up their kids really, so mostly to each his own is my opinion. I think it's awesome it works for his family like that. I also think kids who do watch some TV aren't going to be doomed to a life of failure ;-)
