The taste doesn't bother me. I make my own protein shakes using Greek yogurt, vanilla whey protein, blueberries, mixed berries, coconut water, vanilla and ice. I also added a little wildflower honey. The combination of flavors takes over I think.

And I should add, I did those things because calorie counting seems super hard and time consuming. For my life, it was easier to just cut things out - all or nothing works well for my personality.

For me it's always been about small, achievable goals. For that first month that I did the 30 Day Shred, I only drank water and didn't eat after 8pm. Even those are pretty hard goals - but even picking just one can get you started in the right direction, Amie!

      Tracy Mayor

This is a really good question. For me, I know I have 5-7 extra lbs on because I have too many things on my plate and exercise goes to the bottom -- or off the list entirely. Also I cut way down on sleep, and that makes me do the tired-eating (coffee, chocolate, carbs...)

      Carla/MizFit

I never ever say YES in the moment ever ;) no matter how great something sounds I tell the person I will get back to them so I can sit w/it and be sure that THAT ONE THING won't be the proverbial straw....

      Brandie

Yes, I need this now. I think to do all I need to do this week, I need to not take time to sleep or eat. No really, what I need to do is step back and realistically say I can't do all of this and not agree to do it all.

      Mandi Welbaum

I take a step back and look at everything and sort through what's REALLY important, and what can wait. Family and my health are at the top, so everything else can just wait. Laundry can pile up, but I want my child to be happy, my husband to feel loved, and my body fueled and sweating!

      SisterChristy

I make lists. Lots of lists. They are key to keeping me on track, and helping me keep my sanity.

      workout mommy

I'm trying to learn to say "no" more often. I can't do it all. I need to set priorities. One of those priorities is daily exercise. it is honestly my form of therapy!

      AlainaFrederick

I take a personal inventory and if it doesn't need done right this moment then I'll put it aside. I also ask for help. I've become good at that. So many times we - mom especially - try to do it all and be all and it's just not going to happen. So I've started asking for help and being honest when I can't take one more project on.

Same here - My husband freaks out on me because I buy "all healthy stuff...where's the snacks" when I grocery shop. Well an apple with peanut butter is a snack!! If it's not there then you can't eat it!

      ReneeJRoss

I agree with you completely. I try to keep the junk out of the house. My husband however came home with Doritos and other junk. That doesn't tempt me too much but I do keep plain tortilla chips to snack on and use in salads.

    • I find it challenging to curtail caloric intake because I'm the one always around food (primary parent, etc.). When I'm out during the day with the kids, or traveling for work, my eating habits are so much better. So, I am super careful about what I keep in the house, knowing that if it's not there, I will not eat it.

    • So from now on ... you can expect for the old neuropathway to get triggered from time to time. And you can build stronger pathways, stronger healthier habits!
    • X

      Mandi Welbaum

I talk to myself and ask myself, "Why did you eat that?.... Well, did it taste good?...Was it good for your body?...Well then WHY did you eat it?" Then I move on. I have to understand WHY.. the emotions, the thoughts, the situation before I can move on so I can handle it better next time.

Choose You encourages women to make a commitment to their health so they will then act as good role models for all of those they take care of. http://www.chooseyou.com/default.aspx When you make your commitment, you pledge to make a contribution to the ACS every week you don't hold to your commitment. The financial obligation has kept me on track. The blog http://blog.chooseyou.com/ I made my commitment on a billboard in Times Square--so now I feel like I definitely need to stick with it.

    • I lighten the load by doing what I can do and not beating myself up if everything doesn't get done. I may plan to exercise for an hour but if I can only fit 30 minutes in during 3 ten minute sessions then that works. Or, I just put on my heart rate monitor while I am doing housework to remind myself that I am still exercising.

Alaina - I learned people who are afraid to fail often don't try. So that when they fail they have a ready excuse to fall back on. "Well, I did horribly because I procrastinated and did it last minute." "Well, I didn't research it as well as I should have so that's why that paper wasn't that great." I would imagine that could be applied to losing weight. I'm sure I suffer from it too. Well, what if I really try and I still don't' lose weight? Or what if I do lose weight and my life isn't magically perfect and wonderful as I often imagine losing 10 pounds will do for me (because realistically, it won't, so it's a way to not have to dig deeper).

I'm 23 years old, with a 5 year old. If I keep stuffing my face and sitting around, I'm going to be HUGE by 30, and my son will only be 12. The longer I let myself be overweight, the less years I'm going to get to spend with my husband and child (and future children). My mom never got to meet my son... I want to meet my grandchild and great grandchild someday.

    • Losing weight is about saving my life... reducing the risk of diabetes (runs in family), cancers, etc. It will also allow us to expand our family and have more children (obesity is the cause of my infertility). So by losing weight, I can not only live longer, but have more to live FOR!

    • Losing weight is like running a marathon. You never intend to come in first, u just want to finish. So with weight loss, you need to learn how to be successful at it one day at a time. Slow and steady...consistency is key. And by the time u have it down, it turns into a lifestyle.

Once I started working out (it was the 30 Day Shred for me - 20 minutes a day!), I found myself wanting to eat better and being more careful of my eating habits so not to waste those 20 minutes I spent nearly killing myself. Or letting Jillian Michaels kill me.

      Shredheads

Go to my site, Deborah - http://theshredheads.com - it's a 3 level (20 minute each) workout - Jillian Michaels (trainer on the Biggest Loser). It combines cardio, strength and abs in one workout. It's TOUGH - but when done consistently = great results. I did it for 30 days straight and decided to blog about it - hence the blog...

      Mandi Welbaum

Alaina - I just read "The Clothesline Diet" and this woman literally walked around the clothesline in her backyard to lose weight. It was highly motivational.... what if every time you loaded the dishwasher or the washer/dry, you went outside and did a lap? If you do 3 loads of laundry a day, and a lap each time you put the load into a machine, that's 6 laps.

      SisterChristy

Deborah, Jillian Michaels' 30-Day Shred is a DVD!

      Shredheads

Also, I just saw this great article in the March issue of Self - I forget the ratios - but it was like 150, 80, 20 - 150 minutes of mild exercise (like 4-5 on scale of 1-10 - walking to the mailbox counts!), 80 minutes of a 6-7 (active walking, jump roping, MOVING) and then 20 minutes of a 10 (where you have trouble talking). Do that weekly and you'll see inches go away. I'm curious to see how that works - though I'm pregnant so will have to wait...

      Deborah

Alright, what is the 30-Day Shred?

      Brandie

Alaina that's me too. And lately I've been physically in pain and that has sucked out what little motivation I had to exercise before completely. :(

      Yum Yucky

After starting my weight loss journey in 2006 and losing over 40 pounds (with 4 kids), I still sometimes have to push myself to exercise. That is where the "wanting it" comes in. You have to keep pushing through because you want those results. It's hard sometimes. Find the exercises that you enjoy. Don't put yourself into a box where you feel you have to do the same workouts that others do. Make it fun!

      SisterChristy

I agree on the 30-Day Shred. That was the first real exercise I ever did, and as hard as it was, it got me moving. I LOVED the results so much, it motivated me to keep looking for something I truly loved doing regularly.

      Shredheads

Alaina - I'm obviously a huge fan of the 30-Day-Shred - it's 20 minutes a day - though a very hard 20 minutes, and I found that with 3 kids and a full-time WAH job, I could definitely fit that in. It was very effective - particularly if you're already doing great with H20 and food!

      ReneeJRoss

Exercise is like icing on the cake. If you can get the diet on point you can jumpstart weight loss and then add in exercise a little at a time. Baby steps. Like going for a walk. Or walking up and down your stairs a number of times a day.

      SisterChristy

I was the same way. It was all about finding an activity that I actually enjoyed. Also doing something with a group, even if it's online helped keep me accountable. We did the 6-week challenge with EA SPORTS Active More Workouts, and it kept me on track. I've now discovered a love for running.

When nursing - I eat/drink when I'm hungry and thirsty (also, while you nurse, great habit is to drink 8 ounces of water because it helps and water is key). That said, don't pick up the cheetos when you are hungry, but you do need a lot of extra calories to nurse and I don't think now is the time to cut back, but instead make sure you are making good choices. Just my 2 cents =)

      AlainaFrederick

When I was breastfeeding I really needed the extra water - when you think you've drank enough drink MORE!! Once I started keeping track of how much water I was drinking I realized it really wasn't that much. That should help you with the hunger. Also things like carrots, celery, watermelon, etc throughout the day help too. But SERIOUSLY push the water!!!

You're burning tons of calories - I believe on weight watchers, if you're EBF they add like 5-10 points. I found that the best way for me to drop was to only drink water AND stop eating past a certain time. Otherwise, I had to eat!
