It seems a little crazy, giving homework in kindergarten, but as long as the school keeps it short and sweet in that first year, I think it's okay.

There are (at least) two schools of thought on this and schools (yes, public and private) span the range from what is considered progressive (very little or no homework for early grades) to more traditional structure with a lot of homework. Both have their merits.

I think it's a good habit to get into so that it won't be such a shock later on.

My daughter had homework in kindegarten everyday but it was a very small amount - nothing overwhelming

Nope. Every single day so far, she has had homework. She loves doing it so it is fine but still...Kindergarten? Homework? Jeez!

Last year, my son was in half-day kindergarten and he had homework several times a week. It was usually just a worksheet to reinforce what they had been learning at school. I don't remember having homework until maybe 2nd grade. I don't disagree with having homework for kindergartners though as long as it is a short assignment.

Wow! I didn't have daily homework until late in grade school (5th grade or so)!

Really, so different than when we were kids! My recollection of kindergarten was washing dishes in the pretend kitchen.

My daughter has full-day K, but no homework.

I still have a hard time believing that my daughter (in Kindergarten this year) has homework EVERY day!

    • For those of us who attended kindergarten, um, more than a couple decades ago-- how is our children's experience different? Obviously it is much more advanced, but what else are you seeing?

The only other reason to have your child tested is if you suspect a learning issue or if you feel she may be gifted and the school where she's going isn't serving her needs.

There is no reason to have your child tested unless it's required for admissions to a competitive school. However, your child will be tested just as soon as he starts school. They'll do an informal classroom assessment to see what ability groups to put him in and to structure their curriculum.

It started to move our understanding from 'Our child is very bright' to 'Our child has special educational needs'

Doug, how did your child's score change what you were looking for?

      Doug Morse

We went in kind of clueless going into to the ERB administered test. When we got the score (a high one), we were a bit taken aback and had to reconsider what we were looking for.According to the write up, Zeke was very comfortable and social.

It was a little stressful for part of it and then the rest, they asked us to leave the room.

I have two that could have been tested and two that will be going into K soon. I didn't have my first two tested. They don't make us do it here in IL. Only if we want to. Should all kids be tested?

Our oldest was not tested prior to kindergarten, but was tested during the school year.

    • How many of you have already had experiences with testing your young children? What has it been like?
