Let's talk about how we get our families back to the table! Hannah Keeley, host of the TV show Hannah Help Me!, will lead a chat on the importance of family dinners, recipe ideas, conversation starters and ways we can use time with our families to give back locally, such as donating to the Libby's Virtual Canned Food Drive. Share your tips for getting the family back to dinner to win a wonderful Libby's gift basket. The fantastic mom blogger co-hosts for the Talk all recently joined Hannah for lunch in three cities, sponsored by Libby's - in Houston, Kansas City and Pittsburgh - where together they created family activity kits for families in need. We're looking forward to hearing great new ideas for getting our families back to the table!

Breakfast night is big when the evening is packed with activities (it's a quick meal). We do Fresh Mex pretty much everyweek (low points for mom and dad and everybody loves it and makes their own *speciality*). Sushi out every week.:) Now that fall is upon us--more soups and crock pot meals. I will often get the kids to choose the next night's dinner, like tonight's Cincinnati Chili (both boys were in total agreement) :)

Rachel - it doesn't have to be fancy. It can be as simple as Hat night and everyone gets to wear a hat to dinner.

      Kristen Doyle

Tracie - we do that too! In the wintertime we eat by the fire and have an "indoor" picnic. My kids LOVE that!

I can't believe we have done that! That's so up my alley. We do family movie night or family pizza night (like we just shared at Feed Our Families today), but not really "themed". Love it!

We've done dinner and a movie (make a meal that matches a movie...Honey I Shrunk the Kids, everything is "mini".) We've also done a night where all the food has to be derived from one color. So yellow could be Stuffed Spaghetti Squash Boats, Corn, Peaches, Banana Crumble, etc. Let the kids pick the color and then you all can decide what foods match the color. It is a fun thing to do (and sometimes a challenge!)

Spaghetti tacos? Haven't heard of that but we had taco dogs one day in high school. It was the second to last day of school and I think the cafeteria ladies only had a few items left to get rid of!

we do breakfast instead of our usual dinner and my little guys seem to enjoy that! Once we put our pj's on first! LOL

I love the idea of theme nights -- how do you have the energy for that? By the time I've chased kiddos all day and made dinner, I just want to crash! ;)

Oooh, I love the idea of Taco Tuesday. We might do the same thing. Anyone ever have spaghetti tacos?

Haven't tried that! Sounds fun though.

we do family picnics and lay a blanket in the family room and all get to eat in there together. My kids love it!

We usually have "Fancy Restaurant" night once a month. Kids dress up in chef's hats and aprons. We light candles, use the fine china, and eat whatever everyone has prepared together. (Fine cuisine...it is not.) But it's fun and they remember it.

      I guess I should say...they aren't always beef tacos...

    • Do any of you ever do theme nights at the table? They make dinner time sooo much fun! I will base it around what the kids are learning in school sometimes. We did Greek night one time -- wore togas, ate Greek food on the floor and listened to Greek music. The kids had a blast (and so did I)!

Always. Which is why it seems like "what you do" for us now.

We didn't. It has been a challenge for me to get used to the idea. I loved eating at the homes of friends whose famiiles did though. They always seemed more aware and appreciate of each other.

      Brandie

Yep, we did! Same time every night too! That got away as I got older though due to lots of changes in circumstances.

We ate dinner as a family most nights, but we weren't involved in as many things as kids are today.

No - I really don't remember many times around the table. My best and favorite memories are more for holiday family gatherings.

      Kristen Doyle

I will say this... I have 4 kids and 2 in activities now. We used to eat at 5:30 each night, but now I realize that if I want to have dinner around the table, I need to realize some flexibility in that. There are nights that we don't sit down until 7pm, but my priority is that we are doing it together.

What a wonderful thing for your kids to know they can count on too!

Unfortunately no, we were more the eat when you can types. Hopefully, with my own family we can establish something... It's the only time that my whole family is actually able to be together (my husband and I do split shifts with our jobs)

      Deborah

We ate together, often dinner out--but we were together.

      Sara Patterson

I grew up eating at a certain time, but not a necessarily "together". My home was very much culturally based, being a latino family. The women and girls helped serve the men and boys and they ate right away. By the time we fixed our own plates and drinks they were done and sitting in front of the TV. I make sure we all "stay" at the table until everyone is done, except for the rogue toddler we're trying to teach.

      Kristen Doyle

Yep - it was not an option. I think our parents made it a priority...plus there were less activities for us all to be in and more time in the day because school was shorter!

      Hannah Keeley

Absolutely. That's one of the things I love about Libby's Get Back to the Table campaign. I reminds families about just how important that really is.

Oh yes, my mother cooked every single night and we ate at the table as a family. Probably one of the best parts of my childhood.

Dinner is a big deal in my house, just like it was growing up. We all turn the TV, and computer off and sit down to enjoy each others company.

Yes, it was SUPER important to my mom. We couldn't get up until everyone was done!

      Shannon

Yes, it's one of my fave childhood memories and we had a big Sunday lunch at my grandmother's, too. We still do Sunday lunch at my MIL's.

      SuperJenn

Absolutely! It wasn't an option to not eat at the table. Even in the summer when I could hear my friends playing outside LOL

      Tracie - PPM

Our dynamic was different - my dad was never home and my sister ended up sick in the hospital a LOT. However, Sunday afternoon was ALWAYS a nice family dinner. We work hard to do that in our house now.

      Rachel Lacy

Yes -- we had dinner together practically every meal -- especially on the weekends (breakfast/lunch/dinner). I enjoyed it.

    • Did all of you grow up with eating at the table? I remember clear as day that we ate at 6:00 sharp everynight and we were ALL at the table unless we were out of town.
