The 5 S's- swaddling, shusshing sounds, side/stomach positions, swinging (life saver for us!), sucking as a calming reflex- also a good one for us with a pacifier.

What about his theory on the cause?

I think it's something you need to be prepared for BEFORE you tired, frustrated and exhausted and can look back to as a reference. I read The Happiest Baby on the Block before I had my second. I was trying to be overly prepared jic.

Tonya, I can only imagine how stressful it's been!

It's horrible watching them like that and feeling so helpless, My daughter spent 6 months in and out of Children's Hospital in Oakland and was tested for CF. I think that was more stressful than the colic, I've always wondered if there was some connection.

I totally understand your frustration - we have spent many hours inside PGH Children's Hspt for Hunter.

My daughter had a full rectal prolapse at age 2 and has suffered from extreme constipation if we vary her diet even a little from high fiber. She still at nearly 8 has many digestive problems.

Our son that had colic is also autistic and has had surgeries on his productive and digestive parts - he also has issues with bowl movements

In general, colic occurs in healthy newborns and although is uncomfortable, it disappears completely after a few months. There's no proven correlation to-date between colic and digestive issues in later childhood/life.

    • Has any research been done to see if babies with colic tend to have digestive issues that continue into childhood?
