My son got a shot not mist.

This is the first year we've actually been able to get the mist for the kids, two of mine have had issues with asthma in years past, but have now been off meds for over a year so they were allowed to get the mist.

I am Heather and I'll be getting mine as soon as we figure out what this cough is!

That is a great point, Connie. People with compromised immune systems should not get the mist form of the flu vaccine. However, you are a perfect candidate for a regular flu shot!

People cannot actual "get the flu" from the flu shot because it contains inactivated viruses.

I can't get the mist and neither can my husband or daughter because I'm on immunosuppressant medications. The mist is a "live" vaccine which means I can catch the flu from it. Be careful if you live with or are close to someone like me or someone with cancer.

That is correct! The shot is an inactive form of the flu strains and the mist contains live flu viruses.

I think one is live and one is not?

Both the shot and "mist" (nasal spray) are effective forms of immunization. Some people prefer the nasal spray in order to avoid needles.

    • I have a question: My kiddos all got the Flu Mist this year instead of the vaccine. I've heard bad and good about the mist. Does either method work better?

My husband got the shot. He was tired and run down that evening. He had a random headache the following day. It was strange and lasted the day. Other than that, no other affects.

When I received my shot, the actual injection didn't hurt at all. My arm didn't start feeling sore until a couple of hours later, but then was completely fine by the next day :)

Yep, maybe that my son is just more vocal now! LOL!

Good to know Heather. I'll be sure to do that.

This year's flu shot does not have any additional side effects compared to previous year's shots. I can't really say that it is more painful, since that is such a subjective measurement. It is common to experience some tenderness of the injection site and some arm/muscle soreness, but I tell patients to use their arm instead of treating it gingerly just because they received a shot. The more you use the muscle, the less likely it will hurt for more than a day or so.

That's what I've heard. Since it has H1N1 plus the flu shot. Doesn't matter to me, I'm still getting mine. But hear people complaining about it, even my mom did.

I know most of the flu shots are the combined standard flu vaccine with H1N1 vaccine this year. But I didn't think it was any more painful than normal when I had mine.

My son already got his and his arm was sore this year, more than last.

    • I've heard that the shot this year is a bit more painful and/or has more side effects. Is that true?
