Read and re-read those labels. It is critical the peanut butter substitutes you choose are manufactured free of allergens you are concerned about. Understand the food allergies considered. For example, tahini is made of sesame seeds...not safe for someone with a sesame allergy. I agree with the point made about very young children not being able to tell the difference between peanut butter and soy nut butter, etc...should be okay as long as they are trained to only eat foods after a trusted adult has read the ingredient labels.

@ Emily, that's a good point that never crossed my mind. thank you.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I always avoided peanut butter substitutes with my allergic child because I did not want her to become confused about what was safe and what was not.

@hollydays... a child who already has food allergies could add a new one at any time. It's a good point to always be careful about introducing new foods to a child who already has allergies.

I agree with Aimee... Sun butter is much, much better than soy better and safer than other nut butters.

Sunfolwer see butter from Trader Joe's is a staple at our house.

Be careful of sun butter though because although it's rare, if there is a nut allergy the kiddos can also have a reaction to it even if it doesn't show on the allergy tests...we gave it to my peanut allergy girl and she had a reaction. :(

@Amnichols my son was highly, dangerously allergic to sesame. Tahini is made from sesame, so that was not an option for us. Luckily, he outgrew his allergy around age 10!

Sun butter is way better than soy butter! My son LOVES his sunbutter and fluff sandwiches.

We're fans of soy nut butter. My son was allergic (or thought to be allergic) to peanut butter when he was younger, so we stayed away from it. Now soy nut butter is always the choice in our house. We buy a brand call "I M Healthy" Goofy name, I know. My fave is the honey-sweetened creamy. I don't think it's great plain, but in a sandwich, you can barely tell the difference. I recommend this even for parents w/out allergic kids as it's safer in a school setting.

Sun butter, apple butter, I'd say almond butter, but I'm guessing if PB is out so is that. Other than that, if you can do cream cheese, cream cheese and jelly is delicious! =)

    • Is there any good substitute for peanut butter that can be used so my son can try out PB&J but without the PB? We're just avoiding PB right now because my brother has serious and fast reactions to that.

My dd can do goat's milk cheese - never tried goat's milk. We give her lact-aid right now. She shows no reaction to it, and loves it.

I have a friend who's babies tolerated the goats milk fine when cow's milk wasn't toloerated but you have to do the homework to check.

Many supermarkets sell it. Often in a different location from the dairy section. You'd have to ask. I'd ask my local grocer to carry it if they don't. Maybe check your Wholefoods if there is one near you. Or Trader Joe's. My local stores carry it though. Maybe do a google search on the benefits of goats milk also to see if it's something you'd like to feed your child.

My understanding is that if you have a dairy allergy, you will likely react to goat milk

We were told the protein in goats milk is too similar to dairy but we never tried it, worth checking out. The thing to remember with oat or rice or hem milk is that they are low fat, avocadoes are good. We actually used to put canola oil in her food or on her bread (yuck) to give her that oil as the nutritionist said she actually had zero fat in her diet when I stopped breast feeding. We were veg.... she now has to eat meat!

How about goat's milk? Isn't that different than all other milk which is why some mommies use it to transition to table food for babies.

Thanks everyone....son is "sensitive" to coconut but the reaction is horrible so I don't want to give her coconut.....I may try oat though.....I've not heard of that....

Hi Caryn, Good to see you here! I agree with the above - coconut milk, oat milk, and consulting a nutritionist, too.

I used rice milk for my daughter but then made sure to get good fat in her diet other ways, like sauteeing veggies in olive oil, avocado, and even french fries!

      Isabella

I would have her tested for the coconut fist, that allergy is climbing.

We had the exact situation with Benjamin. The doctors weren't concerned as long as he received enough protein, which often gives fat. Is your daughter able to eat meat?

We use Oat milk for my little one, calcium fortified and protein rich

    • Question....since my 11 month old daughter is showing signs of dairy intolerance, what do you recommend (besides soy) so that she gets enough fat? Rice doesn't have enough.....Almond? But I'm concerned about the allergenic component? Right now I just keep nursing her b/c I don't know what to do
