We need to start doing "date night" again. It sort of slipped through the cracks after we had our boys. Generally, we try to keep a weekend night and catch up on shows together, or my parents (or brother in law) will watch the boys and we'll head out to grab some pizza locally. It's nice to just get out of the house together. Thinking of planning a weekend getaway soon (Caribbean maybe?) since the baby just turned 1.

MeganM that is so great to know and makes them the No. 1 choice for me then. That's one thing about German products I can get here that I love -- I can always count on the best ingredients in them because things in Germany are just in general made more healthy/nutritional. Not having grown up with it, I can not stand food coloring.

    • Here are some very cute ideas on "romance" Dr. Oetker shared with us!

How to have a romantic evening at home:

      1. Don’t just heat up the kitchen—start a fire or light candles to set the mood
      2. Find the perfect wine pairing for your Dr. Oetker Ristorante pizza
      3. Turn off all unnecessary distractions, which means no TV or texting at the table
      4. Break out the fine china and a tablecloth to create a fine dining atmosphere
      5. Dress up just like you would for a fancy restaurant
      6. Set the stage for romance with a soundtrack for the evening
      7. Adjust lighting to help create a relaxing and romantic mood
      8. Dust off your dancing shoes and make your living room a dance floor
      9. End the night with a decadent Italian dessert, preferably one you can share
      10. Let the night unfold and enjoy the special occasion

Depending on your appetite one Ristorante pizza is about 1-3 servings. The Spinaci flavor comes with a nice, hearty garlicx sauce but the other flavors, such as Mozzarella or Vegetale aren't garlicky.

A friend was just telling me that sometimes they choose a different room in the house for dinner - so setting up a picnic on the coffee table with candleight, or using the dining room (which they rarely use), or even just turning off all the kitchen lights and eating only by candlelight (and hiding the kitchen mess).

    • There's a lot of chatter about how important family meal times are - we try to sit down as a family EVERY NIGHT. Lots of times it's a home-cooked meal, but sometimes frozen pizza is what it has to be. Like tonight - I'll get home at 7, and I have to be out at a meeting at 7:30. I already know that tonight's a frozen pizza night.

My boys LOVE helping with anything that needs to be breaded (pork/chicken). Tenderizing the meat, putting it in egg, and then coating with bread crumbs. A huDge mess - but they have fun...and I actually think it helps them to eat more when they've actually made it!

Taco night has become a staple in our home - so that one is something we do together. And we do like making pizza together - if we have good pizza dough. And of course, there's the garbage shakes my hubby prepares with the kids for dessert if they're on their best behavior. (ice cream, cookies, milk, chocolates, all whipped up in a blender...yum).

    • Valentine's day has been a huge holiday at my house between me and my husband. For one, with my birthday so close - everything usually just gets lumped together. Second, for many years we were both auditors and worked very long hours Jan-March. But guess what...this is the first year in 12 years that we are both free from public accounting...yahoo! I have high hopes and expectations for this year...

    • My favorite Valentine's Day: The first year that iPods came out, my husband got me one because he KNEW I would love it. The phone rang at 2:00 in the morning on the 14th because my sister had just had a baby - so he gave me the present then - he was so excited. As was I. Nine years ago. I still have that iPod, though I don't use it.

We do a crudite platter and the girls still think it's fun to see the cut veggies spread out so they can pick what they want. Then, when every single thing is on the table, we get everyone to come sit down.

I actually make the kids (12 and 8) help and pour the drinks now and we seem to go a lot faster - food still hot when I eat it now. You'll get there soon enough!

I always cut up raw veggies for my boys to snack on before the meal. Then we can all sit down together for dinner.

Would it help if everyone sat down at once? And Landon will grow into sitting down - I think. My 7yo still has trouble sitting.

I learned not to call them to the table until it's ready. Everything. Drinks poured, everyone served.

    • I would love to have more family meals at home, but I find it very hard to get Landon (he's 4) to sit for more than a few minutes. And I'm always serving my men and seem to sit down when they are almost finished. Any suggestions?

    • My fave Valentines Day: (cheesy but true)...My (future) hubby and I drove from NC to Myrtle Beach for Valentines Day weekend in 1998. Sitting on a swing, on the beach, in the middle of winter, was when I realized I was in love with him...

    • Here's an idea for those of you with pre-schoolers/younger elementary. I have to give my husband the credit...but on Valentine's Day last year - he played candyland with my daughter with real pieces of candy to grab up if you landed on one of the candy spots.

    • Big's school is doing a Conversation Heart Fundraiser for American Heart Association. They're buying packages for $.50 and gifting them to other people (teachers, mostly) with notes of what they love about their school. Thought this was a great idea. Especially because Heart Health was explained to them.

    • This year we made mailboxes for all three children, so I think we will all just make Valentine's for each other. It will be nice to get away from gifts and candy. We've had enough of that for Christmas and then 3 birthdays in January.

We used to do this all the time (started out during our grad school classes ). Onc we got married, we started writing little notes to each other in our lunchbags, and then on the dry erase board. We've sort of gotten away from that - I must bring that back because those notes made my day!

actually, come to think of it, I found one that I printed out about 6 years ago in a journal the other day. So, he wrote to me about 6 years ago. I posted 10 Things I Love About My Husband last week on my blog

Hmmm...I used to write my husband long letters inside those trifold feeling infused greeting cards when we were dating. He always pretty much made fun of me though. Really, I was just trying to set an example of what I wanted him to do for me.

I've always had a little tradition that when I had to go to ongoing education conferences I would keep a notepad and write an all-day love letter to my husband when it got boring. Now if I ever have anything like that, he wants a letter when I get home. He saves them all. So sweet. Gives me a chance to say things I don't always get to say.
