In The Motherhood, we know cancer touches all of us. On March 8, International Women’s Day, we’ll gather to take a moment as a community to acknowledge the impact of cancer as a woman’s issue. We'll share our stories about cancer and our loved ones and the transformative experiences that cancer can bring into our lives. And we’ll take a simple but powerful step to fight women’s cancers worldwide.

Join the American Cancer Society on this important day to share your stories and learn how our voices can make a huge difference to women around the world who are fighting cancer.

I never go to the doctor anymore. I try to eat healthy, but it is a struggle as is getting enough exercise. No smoking is easy, but I grew up breathing in second hand smoke, so who knows????

That's how my friend died: lung cancer. She never smoked, did not grow up in a house with smokers. She caught hers very late, which renewed my determination to get those health checks. Nothing is a promise, but I think it's important to make those choices that *reduce risk* and tell ourselves we do all that we can.

I keep my mother, who lost her life to cancer at 52, in the front of my mind in everything I do. Sure, I could eat healthier, but I'm working on it. And exercise is something I've learned I can't live without. My mother was healthy, walked almost daily, never smoked, never drank and still got an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer. I'm wondering if there is a common denominator in those that get LeioMyoSarcoma...haven't heard of one yet.

I had a close friend die from lung cancer and she never smoked. I don't think anyone is saying that smoking is the only cause of lung cancer, but we do know that not smoking does reduce our risk of lung cancer.

@jenniferjames That is just one of the brutal parts of cancer. It is totally unfair.

There are definitely non-smokers who get lung cancer. Like many other cancers, it's still not known exactly why. We've made a lot of progress in cancer prevention and treatment, but we still have a long way to go to totally understand this disease. The Society is recruiting people all over the country for a study to figure out what causes cancer and how to prevent it. check out cancer.org/cps3 for more info.

heck YES Kayla S--we have to prioritize our health--otherwise we can't be the successful role models we try so hard to be!

In my mind the screening is a must. I mean we get our cars' oil changed regularly don't we? We need to take as good care of ourselves. And I think that goes for what we put in our bodies, too. I'm working on eating less chemicals and more actual food. You wouldn't put regular gasoline in a car that requires unleaded. Not sure why we eat so many chemicals daily.

I know that everyone is busy, but we honestly NEED to make time. There are other things that are way less important that we spend our time on. It's just a matter of sorting out priorities...and health should be first. It is important for the rest of your life to go well.

It's been harder than ever, as we've had a season with no health insurance. But that has made our focus on prevention even greater. Watching our diet, no pre-prepared foods, getting out for family walks and making time to run. No one smokes or drinks in our household, so those two are taken care of.

I put off doctor appointments all of the time. I always think I feel great, I'm not sick...so it's easy for me to skip them.

Regular dr. appts are so important and I think as busy women we put them off...we need to make sure we don't -- and set a good example for our children.

Planning! Meal planning, scheduling appointments FAR in advance (3-6 months) and making them a priority. I hate going to the gym, but whenever I'm going somewhere a mile away or less, I will walk instead of drive to fit in some exercise.

Schedule it in -- make an appointment with yourself to choose you and put it in writing on your calendar. Earn that computer time by walking, even just for 20 minutes.

So hard, but I make myself for mammograms and other screenings. But I have to say I have been dragging my feet on a colonsocopy because as a mom, it's almost impossible to find two full days to essentially be out of commission to get it done. Not to mention my fear of anesthesia

No smoking is easy. Just don't do it. And I think our kids generally model our behavior. Diet and exercise are a little more difficult but we have to commit to putting ourselves and our health first. Make an appointment to exercise and keep it. First steps that can make big differences.

    • Hey everyone, here at the Society we know that about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented by doing what we know works - not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise, and getting recommended screening tests. Easier said than done, right? As busy woman, how do you fit these important things into your lives?

Politics of pink aside...I think we need to keep the faces out in front of our minds and hearts. You know what I mean?

Morra, I agree. It's just a fine line for a not pretty and not pink disease. As a former Estee Lauder Companies employee, the pink campaigns were massive and opened many doors for awareness that never existed before. So yes, grateful. And now it needs to morph to it's next phase.

@Morra, You are totally right. Women just a few generations back couldn't even talk about what they often called "women problems"

But we also need to be grateful to the Pink Ribbon. It's gone too far, but imagine that 40 years ago, women could not say publicly they had breast cancer!

      Kayla S

I am with you, Renee. I feel like we focus on one type of cancer when there are SO MANY. People need to realize that there are more than just pink ribbons out there and research for other types of cancer need funding, as well.

Great question, yes the pink ribbon and breast cancer awareness is a global phenomenon. These efforts are helping to raise awareness however much more needs to be done in the developing world so that women have access to early detection and treatment that is saving lives here in the US.
