Hi Gabrielle - you can find any support group in the U.S. on our website at http://www.foodallergy.org/section/support-groups We currently do not have one in Louisville, so if you are interested in starting one, I'd be happy to help you do so.

I know that my daughter's school has a lot of children who are allergic to certain foods, but I'm not sure about the community as a whole. Unfortunately I am the only mom I know personally who has a child with food allergies. I would love to find a support group here in Louisville. With Louisville being such a large city, I'm sure a camp would do well here!!

Also, parent volunteers may not be with their child's group at camp because they need to learn independence and gain self-confidence.

Tina and Gabrielle - I'd love to go to every city if possible. What is the food allergy community there - is it strong?

I would LOVE camp tag to come to Cincinnati. This sounds wonderful and would really reduce my anxiety about sending my 3.5 yr old somewhere without me.

Our goal and plan is to add new locations each year to where Camp TAG becomes a nationwide camp. We need to have at least 100 children per camp site in order to add a new location.

On Day 5, there will be many activities and games for the entire family to enjoy together, for example, dunk the counselor, obstacle races, etc. Kyle Dine will also be on hand to perform live music. All local and national sponsors will be present, as well, to distribute samples and literature of their products and services.

Parents and teens ages 13-19 who either have a food allergy or who have a sibling with a food allergy may apply to become camp counselors. There will be 1 parent volunteer and 1 teen volunteer with each group of 10 children. The parent volunteer will be responsible to carry each child's medication in a special cooler throughout the morning so medications are always with the children.

There will be a registered nurse on site at every camp who specializes in food allergies, anaphylaxis, and epinephrine administration. An allergy friendly snack will be provided by Enjoy Life Foods along with water.

Camp TAG is 5-day, half-day camp for children with food allergies ages 3-12 and their siblings. Camp TAG will be about 5% educational and 95% pure, camp fun. It will include age-appropriate games and activities about food allergies, anaphylaxis, nutrition, the emotional impact food allergies can cause, and how to stay safe.

I read it in Elisabeth Hasselbeck's book. She sends it with the waitstaff back to the kitchen for the chef. It outlines the cross-contamination concerns as well as exactly what ingredients she can't have.

We only attend one restaurant in our area... an eclectic mom and pop run restaurant. They are always willing to accomodate and appreciate our interest in their food as well. It's always easier to eat international-style foods.

What a good idea. I don't have a laminated card, but definitely do something similar when my son goes on week-long trips to my parents' house.

    • One thing I've been meaning to do is to make laminated cards to take with me to restaurants, outlining the things I cannot have (with gluten, people oftentimes don't get it, and cross contamination is such a huge concern.) It might be nice to have those made up for my son too, to hand to parents for playdates and such.
