Studies show that kids are entering puberty at an earlier age.  Rosalind and the co-hosts will focus on the physical changes and challenges tweens go through and how parents can help them adjust and take good care of themselves.

Some of these are hilarious! I think I'm glad I don't have a boy!

My daughter just started 5th grade and I was impressed that the lead teacher talked to all the kids about this the first day of school, emphasizing that teasing is unacceptable and that they are old enough to take care of their hygiene issues.

A little goes a long way with body mists and perfume too. My 9 year old drowns herself in it. My poor hubby, he can't stand strong scents but he has it coming from every direction!

Oh my goodness, my oldest daughter gave me son some AXE and he was using that instead of deororant!

      Deborah

We had the AXE episodes years ago with our oldest. It's not allowed in the house. The phrase " a little goes a long way" is lost on most tweens. Holy. Cologne.

Axe could be used as part of enhanced interrogation techniques.

I think some of it comes from wearing socks or not. I've noticed a difference.

I think it can be a problem with both boys and girls! And it's one thing with the cleats but what I worry about for tweens is that so many of them are reaching puberty faster and BO is one of the first and really painful ways kids tease each other. So it's really s important to talk to our kids.

One thing that gets to me is they don't seem to smell it on themselves! What's that all about? I know my nose isn't that sensitive... well, it is when I'm pregnant but, it's not the case here. Lol!

I don't have any 'stink' stories w/ my kids yet - but my oldest will get to the point pretty much any day now (she's 10-1/2). Her face when I explained what deodorant is for a few years ago was priceless though!

    • HI everyone! Welcome to our second chat! We are covering tweens and personal hygiene today--a topic that is extremely relevant in my life right now as a mom of 8 and 10 year old boys! Let's get started with some mother humor. Tell me your favorite stink stories! Because we love our children but we don't have to love their stink! Personally, my younger son's soccer cleats could be used as a weapon of mass destruction!

My oldest decided to shave her legs with my razor at 12. It was too early, but she was on a roll. I started a discussion with her so that I was prepared and had appropriate razors when her sister started at the same age. We like the Venus razors with the refills since other razors can get clogged and rusty. Does anyone's daughter use an electric razor? If so what brand?

What a good idea about electric razors. And, yes, I shaved before being permitted. I think my kids feel comfortable enough talking about it with me first. This is definitely food for thought.

I started my daughter with shaving when she was 10. Is it normal for boys to want to shave their legs????

      Jen. L

My daughters shave, they are self conscious of their legs. They also shave their under arms and so does my son. They are 15, 13, and 11! I also buy Nair at times!

Girls and shaving is a HUGE issue! I talk to so many parents about that! It's the the BO issue and teasing. It only takes one comment from a 5th grade student to make a girl feel like there is something wrong with her. And it goes from there. I have gone back and forth on that one a lot. On one hand I want girls to feel beautiful no matter what. On the other we have recognize that girls can feel awful from the comments people make and telling her she's beautiful sometimes isn't enough. What have you all done about this issue?

My daughter hasn't shaved yet. Her hair is blonde and hasn't asked. When she asks I will let her do it...if her reasons are right.

Razors today are so much safer than the ones I had as a teen.

      You ARE Loved

With girls the decision of when to begin shaving is one that must be decided on the family level rather than following a general guideline. However, please keep in mind that if she has hair and is self-conscious it is worth considering - regardless of her "tween age" at the time. Girls can be quite cruel to one another in these years.

      Deborah

That totally depends on the boy. Some of my son's friends began shaving at 13 and some still don't (at 17)...and don't need to. My son shaves just a few times a week. My younger son will undoubtedly begin sooner.

I am fair with dark hair-mom did the typical "no, it will grow back so much worse" but I wouldn't listen. And of course, cuts all over.

Electric razors to start are a lot safer than blades! It can help ease them into it.

And self-esteem is such an issue. This is why I felt that the shaving thing was a battle I wouldn't be involved in. If it made them feel better about themselves, then great.
