Excited for the talk today!
Did anyone see this post on Salon? Writers interview their "bullys" from childhood. Here is the first one and --- wow.

Wow. It's so telling that the "bully" doesn't remember that episode at all, while it tormented the author for years.

I was just talking to my 10 year old about it. He's my fourth child and he already needed deodorant (not anti perspirant though, just deodorant since he's only 10)...and last night, I actually showed him how to take a shower. I told him , I won't look. Hopefully it worked!

So true about not getting involved. Just explained to my daughter that I can't drive her to the bus stop every day, that she has to learn to deal with the neighbor boys. But to let me know if they cross lines beyond just being obnoxious. You want to just punish other kids yourself sometimes and shield your kids. :)

The hardest part about tween girls is knowing when NOT to get involved. When NOT to call the parent of the other child- and when you should. That's a fine line. Follow your gut on that.

HI everyone! Welcome to our second chat! We are covering tweens and personal hygiene today--a topic that is extremely relevant in my life right now as a mom of 8 and 10 year old boys! Let's get started with some mother humor. Tell me your favorite stink stories! Because we love our children but we don't have to love their stink! Personally, my younger son's soccer cleats could be used as a weapon of mass destruction!

We had the AXE episodes years ago with our oldest. It's not allowed in the house. The phrase " a little goes a long way" is lost on most tweens. Holy. Cologne.

I think it can be a problem with both boys and girls! And it's one thing with the cleats but what I worry about for tweens is that so many of them are reaching puberty faster and BO is one of the first and really painful ways kids tease each other. So it's really s important to talk to our kids.

Its also important precisely because its so easy for parents to forget that this one of the ways kids bully each other at this age. So its really important to think about and talk to your kids. This really is the small conversations we have to have now to help our kids but also set the precedent for them coming to talk to us later about bigger things.

This is our first time to participate in a Motherhood event. Are regular showers a struggle in your house? I think a shower every single day was always part of my routine growing up, but I switched from nighttime to morning showers around age 11.

I have the hot water problem too! I do try and have them shower once a day if they are sticky. You know the feeling when you touch them and the sweat makes them sticky. Then, yes. But if not, sometimes they skip a day.

Do everyone's kids shower every day? We do 2-3x/week here. It's just so hard to get all 3 kids through when we only have one shower in the house. In the winter we don't have enough hot water for them all to shower in the same night. My oldest hates showers - we keep telling her she's going to need to take more of them soon.

I totally agree with the change from PM to AM showers--although sometimes I think they need to do both. But my 8 year old takes them at night and that works. The 10 year old needs the AM one and by doing that it makes it much easier for the deodorant using to be part of his routine.

Got a point, Rosalind. Sometimes it's the peer comments that do the trick. It was comments from boys at a Boy Scout camping trip that made my son want to switch to the AXE instead of the kids' stuff he was using!

Even though I have been saying how hard it can be when peers say something about BO. Sometimes for a kid who doesn't believe us or thinks the spray is good enough, one comment from a girl can do the trick.

Have her create a 10-minute play list of her favorite pop songs. When the songs end, she'll know to get out. If they're environmentally conscious, remind them that they're wasting 2.5 gallons of water for each minute they're in the shower. Or set a schedule - if she isn't out of the shower and ready by a certain time, she has to make her own breakfast ... etc.

I have a great hair tip I just learned from my hairdresser. I know my girls like to use a ton of conditioner and hairspray. That builds up and causes lots of tangles in their hair. When they shower... rub a handful of baking soda into their hair... then use shampoo as normal... and the baking soda takes all the waxy build-up right off the hair. No more knots. It's amazing.

So many of the comments speak to the difficult balance of teaching our children how to take responsibility for their persona hygiene, letting them have a say, and also putting limitations on those choices. Like, yes, your child should have the right to choose which deodorant he wants to use but he can't use so much that you go into shock. Really these are tricky moments because our kids can so easily be self-conscious about these issues or want to make their own choices.

I apologize - for some reason I am having trouble replying to the post I started. I am starting a new one to see if this works.
Today around 1 in 7 girls starts puberty by age 7 and by age 8 it rises to 3 in 10. That alone introduces new hygiene challenges. These, of course, increase when periods begin.
We appreciate forums like this. They are so helpful in providing both good information as well as support.8 months ago

This is so important to talk about because I think mothers can really worry and freak out a little about how young their daughters develop--especially if its younger than when they did. So many mothers and fathers tell me they just can't believe they need to have these conversations now--they thought they had a few more years. But if your child is starting to go through puberty and BO is one of the first signs then you have to go where she is.

I started a discussion with her so that I was prepared and had appropriate razors when her sister started at the same age. Girls and shaving is a HUGE issue! I talk to so many parents about that! It's the the BO issue and teasing. It only takes one comment from a 5th grade student to make a girl feel like there is something wrong with her. And it goes from there. I have gone back and forth on that one a lot. On one hand I want girls to feel beautiful no matter what. On the other we have recognize that girls can feel awful from the comments people make and telling her she's beautiful sometimes isn't enough. What have you all done about this issue?

With girls the decision of when to begin shaving is one that must be decided on the family level rather than following a general guideline. However, please keep in mind that if she has hair and is self-conscious it is worth considering - regardless of her "tween age" at the time. Girls can be quite cruel to one another in these years.

That totally depends on the boy. Some of my son's friends began shaving at 13 and some still don't (at 17)...and don't need to. My son shaves just a few times a week. My younger son will undoubtedly begin sooner.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. As our site grows we hope to prove to be a growing resource.
Temysmom-I absolutely agree with the "film" being shown earlier than 5th grade. 5th grade is too late for many. :( What is really sad to hear, is that with budget cuts some schools don't offer any education.8 months ago

I think showing information about periods and BO in 4th grade in general seems to be a good policy and then shown again in 5th grade

Great to hear, Shannon F. It honestly sickens me that little girls are learning how and wanting to use tampons. Scary! My 16 y/o sister isn't interested in them either. And my mom didn't let me use them until I was old enough, and only when I was playing sports or swimming.

@lilac_the_bunny It works great on my younger daughters' hair. My oldest's hair is very, very thick - it works on hers but she has to make sure to get all the way through it instead of just brushing the outer portions since the Knot Genie doesn't have bristles that are very long. But yes, it does work very well in general. :)

We use a detangler when the hair is still wet. I spray it in. But the key is product. Get the right product and be consistent about putting it in your child's hair. I have to do this with both of my girl's (ages 6 and 4) or their hair is a mess!

The hair gets knotty because of the build up of conditioner. Come on guys... try the baking soda. It's cheap and easy and WORKS.

We love John Frieda's serum. (Any of them work) My daughter had the same issue. If you put it on her hair wet and come it out. I promise it will stay out of knots. That was the first thing my daughter said. Mom...no knots! :)

I mentioned in a post below this great trick... next time she gets in the shower, have her wet her hair and then take a large amount of baking soda and rub it into her hair. Then shampoo as usual. The baking soda will get all the goop out of her hair and detangle the knots. Try it - it really works.

I just reviewed a product called the Knot Genie - it's been amazing to use on my 8yo's long hair. It doesn't totally get rid of tangles/crying but it is so much easier to use and she doesn't resist brushing her hair like she did before. I would totally recommend it!

Hi guys. Bible study went late and I'm on my cell phone so I'll probably have to come back and read the discussion!
