Join us to learn how women have used blogging and social media to inspire public health change in their communities, from preventing asthma to fighting cancer and HIV/AIDS.  We'll come together to talk about tangible actions women can take to support and inspire public health efforts in their communities.  Folks from the American Cancer Society and some amazing, health-conscious bloggers will be on hand to share stories and information.  Women are the key to making our families, communities and planet healthier - let's get together and share best practices in how social media strengthens our collective voice.

Simone, your ability to combine your passion for jewelry and your cancer mission is so inspiring. We are often told to do what we love and the rest will follow. But to put your talent toward such a worthy endeavor inspires others to be creative about how they can help, and to step out of the business envelope to consider how to involve meaningful giving back. What would you advise budding entrepreneurs about starting and them giving back?

A Sweet Touch of Hope was inspired by a tattoo on my left leg. In 2004 I had microvascular reconstuctive surgery on my right leg which required the removal of my right tibia bone which had a tumor. During the surgery they had to do a skin graft which altered my lollipop tattoo. The lolipop now represents hope & stylish way to give back :-)

    • I am a wife, mother, sister & friend to many. I'm married to LL COOL J, an icon :-) Today I'm 7 years Cancer free. I launched Simone I. Smith jewelry Valentines Day 2011. I have always loved accesories especially big hoop earrings. My collection includes earrings, cuffs, bangles, & pendants a lil something for everyone. I created A Sweet Touch Of Hope & teamed up w/ The American Cancer Society & Morebirthdays.com to raise awareness & support Cancer research. It's important for me to let other survivors know there is hope. One of my motto's: hope reflects our inner courage.

Gina, we don't have to move yet! As an environmental writer, I thought just advocating for the environment was enough, but as I started to write for MCAF, it opened my eyes to so many other things I could be doing to protect my family's health. I love eating fish, but, the more I learn about mercury in fish, the more wary and protective I am and careful about what I feed my family. Check out how mercury gets into our system: http://www.momscleanairforce.org/resources/how-mercury-poisoning-works/

Ronnie and Marcia-- Whoo Hoo. I swear sometimes I think I want to move to Vancouver and then other times we eek by with a win like this and my hope in the fundamental reason of the country is renewed! :-)

Gina, that's true and I do think it's a really valid point that it's a luxury. Also, though, not doing it is an expense. I might not be on daily advair today if 40 years ago people had capped the local pollution, KWIM. This sounds more bitter and judgy than I mean it. You know I talk with love. : ) I just mean, it can seem a luxury but we can also make it a do-able ask -- that still won't work for 100% of the people 100% of the time, but digital really has broken down the entry barrier.

Marcia, we just WON that vote...and it was very close. So, MCAF made a measurable difference. Yay!

This is a point of frustration for me. I encounter so many mothers with asthmatic children in my town. It's so common, it's overwhelming. But when we start to talk about the causes and what needs to be done, I get that look from Moms like "Hey, I'm challenged enough just affording the medication and keeping my kid well enough to be in school. And I so get that. For many, many of us, activism feels like a luxury.

The great thing about the Moms Clean Air Force website is that it is geared as both an informational site and a place to link up with activism. We currently have an action going on to push back against the Rand Paul initiative being voted on this week.

Thanks, Karyn! Two challenges personally-- getting African-American mothers not so social media savvy to get past mad and take meaningful steps even to engage online. And then to bridge that activity to off line action-- like writing a Congressman.

We hosted a number of online chats like this one that were seriously some of the most enriching community info sharing I have ever experienced. From the one we did focusing on Af-American health, I met so many community warriors. Between the chat and the corresponding twitter conversation. Very meaningful and brought new passionate people to the table.

Hi Gina and all. So excited about joining this conversation! Gina, you nailed it. Moms can and will be the driving force behind cleaning up pollution. Why? Because we would do anything to protect our kids health. We'd love to have you all join the Moms Clean Air Force and help us advocate for our children: http://action.momscleanairforce.org/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=1711&ea.campaign.id=11933

We started with our own stories. Then we started to look around at how the clean air issue was playing out in our own neighborhoods and cities. Then we started a very aggressive social media blitz, cross-posting, tweeting each others work. And we recruited our friends.

I'd love to share that. I was recruited with a group of other bloggers-- for the most part we are mothers-who-blog (subtle distinction there! The idea was not so much to recruit environmental bloggers. But Parents who already had thriving communities that they could go back to with our message. Once you know the facts, you can't help but be motivated to share and mobilize!
