Becki, I know just what you mean! Whenever I start organizing, it inevitably means that I need to make a huge mess first.

This is so timely. I cleaned my house top to bottom on Thursday, and Friday morning it looked like the house had just been holding its breath, and finally exhaled. Stuff was everywhere.

    • Perfect timing for this chat: my husband was working with our new label maker yesterday and he put the pictured labels in our medicine cabinet in the laundry room. He was worried since the whole shelf wasn't full it would be filled in randomly the way it always seems to (the label reads: "other meds / no toothpaste / no junk"). I think he is hinting at something? :)

Our biggest issue is the paper clutter. So much paper. It just piles up and piles up it seems until the pile gets to high and we're forced to deal with it.

My kids are older, so they now very much enjoy taking their books to the used bookstore and swapping them for new titles (or cash!).

Brandie, a while ago I started to embrace the cyclical nature of books. We've started a regular routine of purging titles -- either donating to library or Laurel's school or selling them to the used book store. And then picking up new titles (often times from the used book store). It feels really good to rotate once you start doing it!

      Homa24

I rotate books for the kids, seasonal ones especially but my own I can't bear to stash away. :)

    • Also books. We have so many books. They dont' fit on our shelves. But I struggle to get rid of them. It's like their little friends and if I take them out of the house I'll break their heart. Which is silly. I know books are inanimate objects. But still. So hard!

I also have one inbox (for stuff that needs to be dealt with in the next week or so). Stuff has a way of congregating in that inbox whether I want it to or not, so I make a point of going through it daily to weed and re-weed. When I stay on top of it, it only takes a minute or two each day.

I try to consolidate as much of that stuff as I can, right away. So, for example, instead of hanging on to the school notices, I enter the information into my calendar/notebook right way and then ditch it. For bills, I have two pockets that stick to the wall - one for "to pay" and one for "recently paid".

What about using a few desk trays? This is something I've considered. Maybe labeled "bills" and "school notices" and "ready to file." At least they're contained somewhere that way!

Punch holes in them, perhaps, and put them in a binder - that way you can flip to them when you need them without big stacks to flutter about.

My big improvement on the decluttering front is to have an "outgoing" box in my closet everyone knows about. Whenever we stumble across something we don't need again, we stick it in the box and once a month or so I donate it.

YES to decluttering first. Less to manage!

Great advice. I've hauled five huge boxes to the Salvation Army in the past year, and it helps free up space and make it easier to organize the things I keep!

    • Simplify: 1) don't organize more STUFF than you need to. (Declutter first.) 2) don't organize more FINELY than you need to. (Don't create files if a shoebox will suffice.)

Great idea, Becki! I write the due dates of my bills on a dry-erase calendar that's on my fridge. I also write on there when I get paid and I know which bills come out of which paycheck. Every other weekend, I sit down for a few minutes at the table and write out all the bills that need to go out. Then I file away the stubs! Easy as pie!

      Becki

That may be the secret to my dealing with bills. Rather than stuff them somewhere and forget them, maybe pay them every Tuesday and Friday morning.

    • Routinize: Create routines wherever you can. The more you think through the steps in your regular tasks, the easier they will be to knock off without thinking. I have routines for "getting kids ready for school," "evening cleanup," "work check-in," etc.

      We do this with school work ... the kids all have boxes to keep the papers they want to keep. If they dont' put it in their box, it gets recycled. Everyone knows this. And I'm impressed with how they pick and choose {and not always what I would keep/toss either}

It's like the first pile of junk papers or whatever "breaks the seal" and almost gives you permission to leave more lying around.

@Brandie-I couldn't find slots on the plastic pages large enough so the coupons didn't get all scrunched up. I like that idea so much, and a big thing is what I need. Less likely to get lost!!

      Brandie

Also, it is bulky, but SO incredibly helpful. That's how I did mine and LOVED it. Someday if I ever start grocery shopping again, I will return to it!

      Brandie

Coupon binders are awesome! You get a binder and the baseball card holder plastic sheets {know what I'm talking about}. One coupon in each slot, then you always can see exactly what you have when you shop!

      loranstefani

Have you ever seen CouponMom.com? They have a neat system of keeping the coupon books, organizing by date, and only clipping out what is on sale exactly that week. Now, when it comes to already-clipped coupons, I'm just as lost as you (to the point that I quit couponing, even after regularly saving 40-60% a month).

I do! My kids have trouble in the morning. Not morning people. So I write down their routines with them (so they have some power and control over the routine -- order etc.) and they draw pictures, then they can check the chart to make sure they are getting through it all.

    • Admittedly, one of my key strategies to establish household harmony is getting stuff BEHIND DOORS. We implemented this storage solution a couple of years ago and it has been perfect for storing dining goods and my daughter’s explosive collection of craft supplies and books. See http://www.bostonmamas.com/2010/07/perfect_storage_solution.html and image hopefully attached here. PERFECTION.

I don't, because for some reason the step of punching holes in the paper has always acted as a deterrent for me. I have an inbox, a standing file, a wall calendar and a notebook where I write EVERYTHING down.

What if you asked her to pick some things to put in a box. If she can survive without them for 30 days, it's time to pass them on to someone else who can use them and play with them. And give her 3 passes - she can in that time, ask for 3 things back. That way, she might see she can live without things, but if it's really special and she's changed her mind, she gets an out?

Becki, I took art wire and strung it across a wall in my 7 yo's room. Like your daughter, she likes all of her creations. I got cute colorful clothes pins and wooden ones that she decorated and she can hang all of her stuff there. We clear it out at least once a year, and byt then, she's usually not emotionally attached anymore so we can photograph to preserve and recycle. It actually looks cute.

Photographing works sometimes, but often the issue is she's "still playing with it," and that can go on for days.

ME TOO. I have a very artistic and sentimental daughter. I find having a "holding are" -- between "out" and "thrown away" helps her let go. "We'll just put it in the art storage bin in the basement, OK?" Three months later we can toss with no problem.

There are several cartoon episodes that illustrate this problem. I normally don't care much for SpongeBob, but we watched a whole episode and it really helped the kids see that sentimental value becomes less sentimental when *everything* is special. We take digital pictures of anything they think is special, and keep hard copies of the ones we (parents) find truly remarkable for their age.

    • I also have a problem with my daughter's stuff. She's nine. To her, every drawing or craft she makes is sacred, every stuffed animal is a family member. She creates these fabulous and creative installations in her room, but then taking them apart is like destroying her "art." But it looks like a mess to everyone else!

    • So how many of you feel guilty about throwing away/recycling kids' art? I tend to only keep the stuff that's really unique or that I think will remind me of the child or put a smile on my face in 20 years. To be honest, that's not a whole lot of it. If I'm in doubt, I sometimes put the art on a shelf for a few weeks and see if the child ever asks about it or if I think about it. If no, it gets tossed. :)

Also, want to add, you wouldn't even need to put glass over it, because the transparency paper will work like glass would. And stick a pretty paper behind it to make it pop.

      Brandie

Erin, the other thing you can do, is go to a teacher store and get the clear projector papers that are able to run through a printer. Then you can print a calendar format on it, frame it and you're good to go!

      Erin O

There used to be, Becki! Apparently it's an item that doesn't exist anymore on Etsy. You can just stitch a calendar outline on a favorite fabric and frame it, then use markers to fill in the days/month like you would any dry-erase calendar.

My kids LOVE to draw and write. I save a sampling of the most precious pieces. The rest of the daily kid papers go into my recycling bin (a picnic basket in the pantry). If we really want it, we can get it back, but so far we have not reclaimed anything. Process not product for their art.

We're all about large bins in the basement. I'm also ruthless about getting rid of stuff. So, for example, everything I'm storing for 1-2 years (e.g., 3-4T) must fit in ONE large bin. I either donate to local charities, or thredUP is a great online service for cycling clothes in/out. More details here: http://www.bostonmamas.com/2010/06/get_up_and_thredup.html

    • RE: paper/art clutter/storage. And I also just mentioned this re: kid's clothes. Think in terms of the concept that the more space you allocate the more you will fill it. We are ruthless. For example, we have one cardboard box per grade to store art/papers from school and one large plastic bin for clothing. When space is limited, it forces you to trim down and only save what you really want to save!

Two rules of thumb for ruthlessness:
      1) Can you find it online (information)
      2) Can you replace it within 20 miles for under $20

    • Jedi to-do list trick: You WILL be interrupted throughout your day. So add rough time estimates to your to-do items (5 mins, 15 mins, 1 hour, etc.). That way, when your kid throws up and your three hours of writing time gets reduced to 15 minutes, you can plug something into that open slot.

We have a small unfinished room in our basement but there are 2 shelves. We have all the craft supplies in there. I bought some of those shoe shelves target sells for cheap to add to the shelves there (2 are not enough LOL!), some crates, and other msic. storage items. And have all the paper, crayons, markers, glue.
Also, as we move away from plastic in the kitchen, I've been funneling it down there to hold beads, pom-poms, etc. I dont' want to toss it if it's still usable, but if I'm not going to use it for food, I'll put it to better use!

The attempt to separate media (colored pencils, crayons, watercolors, etc.) has failed here. The child sees no need to keep like with like, so it all goes in one medium sized plastic drawer. The end.

I am a bit obsessed with Task Rabbit for outsourcing. I have used them for everything from household picks ups and purging to event planning and virtual assistant help to rides to the airport! Tereza! So nice to see you here! (I just posted her hack about professional organizers last week.)

      Tereza

My husband uses systems that are WAY more complicated than I can handle. And has platitudes about it. When a (professional) organizer set me up with some SIMPLE systems and very clear rules, it changed my life. My desk, was a pile of papers for year, but for last 4 years it looks like this. No joke, I am an prof organizer evangelist! (unpaid)

I do feel a little better, like maybe this isn't totally out of my reach.

I totally believe this! I am a mess, lol, so I force a lot of order and organization on myself. I think I am better at systems because I am such a disorganized ad hoc person and I have to work so hard at having it together.

And there is organized with things and organized with time. I'm great with the former but chronically late. I work on it constantly. Using a calendar and wearing a watch has really helped.

Thank you for this, M. So true. Organizing is a skill, not a "gift." We all know people who naturally tend toward that skill more than others, but ANYINE can learn the basics.

Meagan, that's surprisingly helpful to me. It makes me feel like getting things under control isn't, well, beyond my control.

    • Related to the big picture and Asha's journey to becoming more organized - I would like to debunk the idea that you are either "naturally organized" or a slob. I am FAR from naturally organized, and used to think that trying to get more order in my life would go against my free-spirit ways. But I have come to realize that organizing my life helps me be MORE creative and MORE spontaneous because I'm not wasting time putting out fires!

When I started work, one of the (few) women IBM VPs gave a talk. One of the things she said that stuck with me was that they made a list at the beginning of the year of everything that had to get done, then figured out what they could delegate off of it. I liked the analytical approach.

Similarly, I sometimes apply the "could this problem be solved with money?" question. Sometimes, the answer is "yes, and it would totally be worth it."

Yes, engaging your kids is key.

My mom made me do that when I was little! It DEFINITELY taught me to be more appreciative of her and that I needed to clean up after myself. Drives me crazy now when people don't! And I don't feel bad about asking them to do so!

You are so right. And again, delegate in a way that works for you. Some families use chore charts. I like to ask my boys to do chores as they come up (some days I'd just as soon load the dishwasher, other days, I want them to do it.) As long as everyone is pitching in it works.

      Tereza

Totally agree! A second party helps you keep motion, prevents getting stuck. Getting it done 'just OK' is better than not done at all. :-)

I just delegated the job of cleaning the kids' bathroom to my 12 year old son. He takes it seriously, and now he knows what a pain it is when people are slobs. I think it's made him a little more appreciative of my efforts.

    • C brought up the importance of delegation. Can't repeat this enough. Delegate to your partner, your kids, and to paid help if need be. Swap organizing "services" with a friend. You do NOT need to do this alone, nor should you.

    • Similar to Erin's dry erase calendar, I like this "routine chart". (It's more a daily to-do, in order.) I love that she puts things like "create" "practice" and "play" on it.

I am avoiding it like the plague because it's hard enough not to let Twitter and FB suck my time away. I know it's beautiful and very useful, but I just can't swing it right now.

    • Hey folks, sorry to share a couple more links from my main blog, but these are some of my favorite organizational items...people always comment on them in our house!

      1. We have a set of these chalkboard circles in our kitchen for menu planning, schedule notes, household to-do’s. Our 7 year old loves being the scribe!
