We Are Here With Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys Social Good Summit

My girls and I have been playing We Are Here by Alicia Keys pretty much nonstop since she rocked the Social Good Summit on Sunday with her words, her news, her passion and her new song.

Picture this: Alicia Keys walking onstage wearing a jaunty fedora, black leather pants and a sheer black shirt covering her pregnant belly (baby due in December).  On the screen behind her was this photo, several stories tall:

Alicia Keys - We Are Here

Alicia said, “The day I wrote the song We Are Here, a friend asked ‘Why are you here?’ Not why am I here, as in why did you come because I didn’t invite you to this place, but why are you here in the world, on earth?  I couldn’t believe I’d never been asked that question before.”

“As I prepare to give birth to my new child, I can’t help but think about what world am I bringing the baby into,” said Alicia.

“Because it’s not about me, it’s about we,” she said.

Alicia said, “People want to do something. We all want to do something.  So many of us want to do something, but what do we do, who do we go to, where do we find it, is it really the right thing, will something happen from it?”

“So I figured, if we can gather a group of really powerful organizations who are doing great work, how many people will want to be a part of that?”

“How many people don’t know what’s important to them, but want to be awakened?” asked Alicia.

And with that, Alicia announced that she’s committing $1 million to We Are Here, a new movement that according to the website will “raise awareness of issues around the world that cannot be solved in isolation.”  We Are Here will support 12 groups, among them: CARE, Equal Justice Initiative, Keep A Child AliveGirl Rising, and MomsRising.

Two organizations immediately matched her commitment so We Are Here launched on Sunday with $3 million.

After making her big announcement, Alicia invited leaders of five recipient organizations onstage for a rich, fast-paced conversation.

And then a piano was rolled to center stage and Alicia sat down to the keys and gave one of the most beautiful, moving performances I have ever heard, singing We Are Here.  Here is the song on YouTube:

People were literally crying as she played, and the audience roared when she took her bow.

Topping off an incredible evening, backstage following the concert, my friend’s 12-year-old daughter said to Alicia, “Alicia, you’re my favorite activist.” And without missing a beat, Alicia replied, “Girl, soon you’re going to be mine.”

Please join us in supporting Alicia, and the We Are Here Movement.

The Motherhood has proudly been involved in the Social Good Summit since its founding five years ago and congratulates the United Nations Foundation, the 92nd Street Y and Mashable on another incredible, groundbreaking event!

Rockport Asked,”What Are You Powered By?” & You Answered!

What powers you each and every day? That’s what the Rockport brand is asking women across the nation, and the response has been amazing!

So many of you have shared that you’re powered by family, kids, friends, pets, some coffee–not to mention being #PoweredByHeels!

Reinforcing the fact that women shouldn’t have to choose between style and comfort, Rockport created the Total Motion collection, which offers an amazing combination of lightweight flexibility and stability so you can be comfortable on your feet all day long! Complete with ADIPRENE by adidas sport technology, each shoe in the collection conforms to the shape of your foot for a fit as unique as the woman wearing it.

We understand there’s rarely time to slow down, let along time to change your shoes throughout the day. So many of you showed us how you rock your Rockports, whether it’s grocery shopping, a walk at the park or shootin’ hoops with the kiddos! Check out a few of our favorite Rockport looks that illustrate how you’re #PoweredByHeels:
The B Keeps Us Honest
Jessica (The B Keeps Us Honest) wore her Total Motion Stretch Boots to chase her boys around the park, play with trains, conquer a doctor’s visit, prepare & serve dinner, and finally, a little shopping!
Meanwhile, Kristin (MomTrends) pushed her new Total Motion Seven to 7 Wedge Booties to the max, with a little morning hoop shootin’, followed by school drop off, chasing the little ones and then a late-night dinner date.
Andrea_Glam Hungry Mom
Looking so chic, Andrea (Glam Hungry Mom) wore her Total Motion Pointed Pump all day long while toting the kids around town. Honestly, running errands never looked so good!
Marion (Marionberry Style) squeezed in some putt-putt time with her little guy while sporting the new Total Motion Desert Boot. No need to change shoes to have a little fun in the sun!
Green and GorgeousAnd finally, one of our favorites from Jennae (Green and Gorgeous). She took a few laps around the grocery store in her Total Motion Desert Boot, followed by a few laps around the local park. After a day of trekking with the little one, Jennae proclaimed,
“Any heels that let me feel stylish and simultaneously show my feet lots of love get my uncontested vote.”
Check out the complete line of Rockport Total Motion shoes as you prep your closet for the fall season. Even better, follow Rockport and share your photo with tags #PoweredByHeels and #Sweeps or upload a photo to their gallery for your chance to win a pair of Total Motion Shoes each Friday, or the Grand Prize of a spa vacation in Miami!

GoldieBlox: Making Engineering Accessible to Young Girls

Goldie Box

The Motherhood has partnered with an incredible company called GoldieBlox on a blog campaign with an equally amazing group of moms, whose daughters have received and enjoyed GoldieBlox toys of their own. We also hosted a Twitter party yesterday to learn about encouraging and inspiring young girls in math, science and engineering fields. Sadly:

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 11.10.23 AM

According to research, the earlier kids become interested in math and science, the more likely it is they will go into those fields as adults. Engineering is one of the fastest-growing job markets in the United States, and it is still a male-dominated field. We can thank GoldieBlox for recognizing and addressing this issue.

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 11.10.31 AM

GoldieBlox offers three award-winning products – the Parade FloatDunk Tank and Spinning Machine – that help young girls to learn and enjoy basic engineering principles (and they have several new products available for order now!). Each GoldieBlox product features a fun story about a girl named Goldie, who has to solve a problem by building a simple machine. The products come with pieces to build the same simple machines that Goldie builds, so kids can build along with her. After finishing the stories, they can take the pieces and use their creativity to build a limitless amount of other simple machines while making up their own stories!

Our blogger team members and other Twitter party participants were enthusiastic in their support of the toys.

Do you have a daughter who might be interested in GoldieBlox toys? How do you encourage your kids – boys or girls – in areas they might find challenging?

Twitter Parties This Week – Don’t Miss Out!

Twitter Party Round Up

This week is filled with fun and informational Twitter parties that you don’t want to miss! From engineering-focused toys for young girls to stylish, comfortable heels for women and bedtime tips for babies, there’s a party for everyone! See all the details for these parties below in this week’s Twitter Party Round-Up. All parties are sponsored and last one hour.

Tuesday, September 16 @ 1pm EST

At The Motherhood, we value creativity and innovation, especially when it comes to fostering these traits in our youth. That’s why we are so honored to be hosting a Twitter party on behalf of GoldieBlox, an award-winning book series and toy company that is set out to inspire the next generation of innovators and help girls think beyond the pink toy aisle!

GoldieBlox offers three award-winning products – the Parade FloatDunk Tank and Spinning Machine – that help young girls to learn and enjoy basic engineering principles. Join us to share your own experiences and advice, learn more and win prizes. RSVP here!

Prizes! We will randomly award five prizes throughout the party, from all eligible correct responses to trivia questions. Each prize includes GoldieBlox and the Builder’s Survival Kit and $25 off any purchase on GoldieBlox.com!

Prize Eligibility: No purchase necessary. Entrants must be legal residents of the 50 United States + D.C. 18 years of age or older. Void where prohibited.

Three SIMPLE Ways To Give Back

Food Bank National Service Day

The word “SIMPLE” has a new meaning for us at The Motherhood. Our ongoing partnership with Champions for Kids for the SIMPLE Service and SIMPLE Giving programs has taught us how easy it is to give back right in our very own communities. Over the course of the summer, our bloggers truly went above and beyond as they organized service projects on behalf of Champions for Kids, and they taught us that anyone can make a difference – it’s really that SIMPLE!

Below, we’ve shared three amazing service projects that remind us why it’s so important to help those in our communities who are less fortunate. You can use these ideas for your next service project or as inspiration to create your own!

Gather a group and head to a facility in need of volunteers

When Cindy of Akron Ohio Moms was asked to participate in the Champions for Kids #PurellLendAHand program, she was eager to help families in her community with back-to-school supplies. Thinking outside the box, Cindy invited her blog community to volunteer at the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank. The response from her local readers was great, and there were more than 20 volunteers, including children ages four weeks to 10 years old, who joined her for the #PurellLendAHand service project!

At the food bank, Cindy’s group learned about how important the organization is for families living in poverty in their community. The group toured the facility and even helped label more than 1,200 soap bottles as part of the Essentials Soap Program. They were able to collect quite a few school supplies and donate them to an amazing cause, all while volunteering for a great local organization!

“Finding ways to get our children involved to volunteer at a young age is a fantastic way for them to develop compassion for others and a heart of volunteering and giving,” Cindy said.

Follow in Cindy’s footsteps for your next service project and get a whole group involved!

Leverage local community events for the good of charity

For her Champions for Kids SIMPLE Giving project, Nadine at Pittsburgh Mommy Blog took advantage of a local event to raise awareness and collect snack donations for local Pittsburgh charity, Jeremiah’s Place.

Nadine chose the Bloomfield Saturday Farmer’s Market to host her snack drive, and she was absolutely blown away by the turnout! She had volunteers who did free face painting and provided entertainment for the children, and people from all over the Pittsburgh area who drove in just to donate snacks for Jeremiah’s Place. Nadine always wanted to find a way to help families in Pittsburgh, and her snack drive was the perfect community service project to help her do so!

“After that weekend at the Bloomfield Saturday Market, I’m convinced that my blog has come full circle. It has evolved into exactly what I always hoped it could be – a way to genuinely impact and better the lives of local families,” said Nadine.

Think about timing your service project with a local event next time!

Give traditional ideas a new spin in the name of a community need

Hosting a lemonade stand was on the top of Lindsey’s bucket list at Sisters to Sons. She made it happen, but not with a typical lemonade stand with the kids. Instead, she made a great summer idea even better by turning it into a SIMPLE Service project for the Elmer’s #BagItForward program in partnership with Champions for Kids!

Lindsey and her kids invited friends, family and neighbors to attend their lemonade stand, and instead of charging 25 cents for lemonade, they asked their guests to bring school supply donations for a local school in their community that has many students whose families struggle to buy supplies!

“You guys, this was SO easy and I know it will be one activity that my kids remember this summer. So on the next day where you wake up and think to yourself, ‘What should we do today?’ Why not try something like this? It’s really this simple,” Lindsey said.

Next time you’re planning a lemonade stand or a neighborhood activity, think about what families in your community might need and “charge” donations instead of cash!

Our bloggers came out in full force this summer, sharing inspiring & motivating stories of their service. We hope their drive to help their community inspires you to do the same!

Share Your #ReasonToSmile with Dreyer’s to Trigger a Donation to Children in Need through Operation Smile

We all scream for ice cream during the summer, and now there are a few more reasons to love Dreyer’s, in particular. Here are our top three:

1) Pinspiration. Dreyer’s has mouth-watering and clever new Pinterest boards that you should check out at your earliest opportunity.

2) Tasty Treats. We’re running a delicious blog and social media campaign on behalf of Dreyer’s, which invites some kitchen-crafty ladies to create their own gorgeous dessert recipes (and talk about a fun way to spend time with your kids, too). Just look at this Mini Cake Filled Banana Split by Vanessa at The Queen of Swag:

And this Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream Pie by Karen at Desert Chica:

3) Facebook for Good. Best of all, Dreyer’s is gifting 500 life-changing surgeries to children with cleft lip and cleft palate through a wonderful organization called Operation Smile. You can help trigger these donations by visiting the Dreyer’s Facebook page and uploading or sharing a photo with the hashtag #ReasonToSmile in the caption. Each upload = 1 donation to a child in need. The Motherhood has uploaded photos to trigger donations, and you should too!
