What’s Happening in Your Neck of the Woods?

March 3, 2014 by The Motherhood

We don’t know about you, but we’ve noticed some extreme weather around The Motherhood’s offices lately – in Pittsburgh and New York, temperatures have been unusually low and accompanied by truckloads of snow. In Seattle, winter has been surprisingly dry and cold.

Extreme weather is just one indication of climate change. It is real, it is man-made, it affects all of us, and we can do something about it.

Last week, The Motherhood hosted a virtual conversation with Maggie Fox, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project, who shared details about the organization’s latest initiative, called The People vs. Carbon, to support a new rule proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The rule will significantly limit the amount of carbon pollution new power plants are allowed to dump into our air and help ensure a safer, cleaner and healthier future for us all.

We also came away from the conversation with some great ideas from a wonderful group of concerned, involved bloggers to effect change in our own lives and do what we can to decrease our carbon footprint:

Check with your energy provider to find out if you can access green energy. We just changed energy providers and were able to add green energy to our use. We pay a little extra for wind power – they use the funds to build more green options. (Kelly, The Centsible Life)

Switch to earth-friendly options in your home. We recycle, have changed all our lightbulbs, EnergyStar appliances and changed our thermostats. (Nichol, KiddiesCorner Deals)

Watch your garden grow. Spring is almost here … gardening is a wonderful way to reduce your carbon footprint AND feed your family on the cheap! And scientists have actually suggested that people who get their hands in dirt are happier. (Diane, Turning the Clock Back)

Go solar. I would love to do solar powered panels eventually when we build a new home. (Toni, A Daily Dose of Toni)

Shop farmer’s markets or sign up for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Shopping local is so important. Not only does it help the local economy but it lowers carbon use. We belong to a local organic CSA. We split the cost with friends and then divvy up the week’s vegetables based on who likes what. (Jessica, Eat.Sleep.Be.)

Collect water from nature. I see more and more people with rain barrels. We don’t have one yet but have thought about it. (Nicole, SAHM Reviews)

You can join the conversation and share your own tips and suggestions, too – tweet with us during a Twitter party with Maggie tomorrow, March 4, at 1 p.m. ET, using the hashtag #ClimateReality. For more details and to RSVP, visit the Twtvite.

In the meantime, you can help the planet by using your voice to support The Climate Reality Project and the EPA in the People vs. Carbon initiative. You can copy and share one of these tweets to help spread the word:

Tell the @EPA “I support limiting carbon pollution from new power plants” http://bit.ly/1fSHK3k #CostOfCarbon

Tell the @WhiteHouse you support the @EPA. Reply saying “no to carbon pollution” & then sign here: http://bit.ly/1fSHK3k #CostOfCarbon

We are looking forward to seeing you at the party!

Start Your Spring Reading List with The Antelope in the Living Room (Giveaway)!

February 26, 2014 by The Motherhood

Book-page-001

What’s on your spring reading list? As we are anxiously waiting for warmer days, there couldn’t be a better pastime than relaxing indoors with a good read!

This spring, The Motherhood is excited to partner with Tyndale House Publishers, the world’s largest privately held Christian publisher of books, Bibles, and digital media – many of which are New York Times bestsellers. We are working with bloggers to feature and review a few of their brand-new titles this season!

978-1-4143-8554-9

The first book we’re featuring is The Antelope in the Living Room by Melanie Shankle, reviewed by the amazing Staci of 7 on a Shoestring, who says of the book, “Whether married or not, The Antelope in the Living Room is an excellent read. The book puts a creative, fun spin on marriage as well as lays out Biblical truths in the union. Melanie Shankle will have you laughing out loud and looking at your own marriage with new perspective. After all, we can all use fresh eyes every now and then.”

Melanie draws from her own experiences on marriage – the good, the bad, the challenges and the blessings! Whether you’ve been married five years or 50, you will find yourself relating with laughter and tears to Melanie’s down-to-earth insights on marriage, as well as the humorous stories she shares. Melanie, who also blogs at Big Mama Blog, shares about The Antelope in the Living Room in the video below:

Melanie was kind enough to answer a few questions about the inspiration behind and writing of The Antelope in the Living Room for us. The Q&A appears in Staci’s blog post, and we’ve re-printed it here:

What was your number one inspiration for writing The Antelope in the Living Room?

A few years ago I came home from a trip and discovered that my husband Perry had decided to “surprise” me with a new antelope head he hung in our living room.  I cannot even describe how enormous it was or how it looked like it had been running down the street and crashed through the front of our house.  We ended up getting in an argument and barely speaking for the next three days.

It just seemed to be one of those moments we all have in our marriages and my hope is that by writing about all these experiences, we can take a deep breath and know we’re normal.

How did you choose the title of the book?

I decided after our fight over the antelope that The Antelope in the Living Room would be a great title for a book about marriage.  Because we all have those things in our marriage that drive us crazy but sometimes we’re afraid to be real about them or to share them with others.

Is there one important piece of marriage advice that has helped you the most in your marriage?

The best advice I can give is to not compare your marriage to anyone else’s.  A marriage is as unique as the two people in it and what works for one couple may not work for you and your spouse.  You need to focus on what’s important in your marriage and not constantly compare it to something that may just look better on the outside.

If there was only one thing your readers could take away from reading this book, what would you want it to be?

My hope is that readers will read this book and exhale deeply knowing that the frustrations and joy they experience in their marriage is normal.  We can all start to believe the grass is greener and I want this book to be a reminder that there is no greater legacy you can leave than to have a marriage that lasts in spite of all the ups and downs.

You also write for the Big Mama Blog. How long have you been doing that, and what do you see as the main purpose of the blog?

I’ve been writing the Big Mama Blog for almost eight years.  I originally started it as merely a way to document family memories, but the readership has grown and the blog has become a real community.  My goal is to give people a moment to laugh or appreciate the absurdities of life in a world that can sometimes be so heavy and serious.

GIVEAWAY!

We are thrilled to be able to give away five copies of The Antelope in the Living Room so you can read this delightful book yourself! All you need to do is Tweet why you would like to read this book, tagging #antelopeintheliving and mentioning @theMotherhood. We will select five winners and notify you via tweet!

Have a Healthier Smile in 21 Days

February 24, 2014 by The Motherhood

At The Motherhood, we believe in the power of a smile – to brighten someone’s day, put them at ease, acknowledge great work or just wear our happiness on our faces. To keep the world’s smiles in good working order, we are proud to be partnering with LISTERINE® Brand – and a great group of enthusiastic women who know the importance of good oral hygiene – on a 21-Day Challenge to rinse with LISTERINE® Antiseptic for 30 seconds twice each day for 21 days (in addition to brushing and flossing).

As one of our participants, Alison of Safety Mom, noted in her blog post, “There’s never enough time in the day to get everything done, so it’s these self-care things that are first to fall off the ‘to-do’ list. I know that my teeth could feel better if I flossed and rinsed, but it hasn’t been a priority. So when I learned about the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge and was invited to participate, I knew I had to do it. We’re going to all become the flossing and rinsing champs in my family!”

Listerine-21-Day-Challenge
Photographed and edited by Alesha, Full Time Mama

Need some additional motivation? Consider this: Brushing alone misses 75 percent of the germs in your mouth (yuck!), and taking up the 21-Day Challenge with your own family couldn’t be easier. Just run over to Target and stock up on these supplies:

  • LISTERINE® Antiseptic
  • LISTERINE® SMART RINSE®
  • LISTERINE® WHITENING® Original Gel Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste
  • REACH® Floss

Now just remember to brush, floss, rinse with LISTERINE® Antiseptic for 30 seconds and repeat twice a day. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, so by the end of your challenge, top-notch oral hygiene should be ingrained in your routine. Give it a try!

While you’re at it, take the opportunity to help kids in need obtain better oral care. Grab your bottle of LISTERINE® Antiseptic and your camera – just like Jenn of Jenn’s RAQ did in the above photo – and take a “Swish Selfie” to upload to the LISTERINE Facebook page. For every photo uploaded, the brand will donate $5.00 to Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program.

At The Motherhood, we keep a bottle of LISTERINE® Antiseptic handy for fresh breath after lunch. Kayla and Nicole took a Swish Selfie in honor of this campaign and charitable effort last week.

Join us to share your thoughts and progress during a Twitter party in March! We will be on Twitter using the hashtag #LISTERINE – watch for more details in the near future.

Can’t wait to chat with you! In the meantime, keep smiling!
