PRSA Pittsburgh Names Cooper Munroe Communicator of the Year!

January 29, 2014 by The Motherhood

We are so thrilled to announce that Cooper Munroe, co-founder of The Motherhood, has been named Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)!

PRSA Pittsburgh held its annual Renaissance Awards in PNC Park’s Hall of Fame Club on January 28. The theme “Honoring Legends” couldn’t have been more appropriate as Cooper was recognized by the region’s best and brightest public relations professionals.

Chosen from among her peers, by her peers, Cooper was honored for her groundbreaking, innovative work and her ability to make a lasting impression on the social media marketing, communications and public relations industry. In partnership with The Motherhood co-founder Emily McKhann, Cooper’s work has helped shape—at the industry level—how national brands collaborate with moms in the social media space. With more than 100 blue-chip consumer brands and organizations as clients, Cooper has created and led many of the premier social media campaigns of the last seven years.

While Cooper has long been a legend in our eyes, The Motherhood was incredibly proud to see Cooper honored by one of the most prestigious organizations in the industry. Congratulations to Cooper on a very well-deserved award!

On the Today Show with Hoda and Jenna Bush Hagar

January 27, 2014 by The Motherhood

I was on the Today Show with Hoda and Jenna Bush Hagar talking about “How parents can relate to kids at any age.”

Here’s the link to the segment: Emily McKhann and The Motherhood on the Today Show.  Please watch!!

We talked about helicopter parenting versus ‘sidle up’ parenting, finding common ground, and “stop, look and listen’, something my daughter’s kindergarten teacher always sang to get the kids’ attention, and a good reminder for us as parents too.

I’d love your thoughts on the conversation if you have a moment!

Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos:

World Poverty to Essentially Disappear by 2035, According to Bill and Melinda Gates

January 21, 2014 by The Motherhood

Bill and Melinda Gates released their annual letter today, this time written in part by Melinda Gates for the first time, and it’s a superb read.

A few highlights that really caught our eye:

“By 2035, there will be almost no poor countries left in the world,” said Bill Gates.  By then, most people will have an average personal income higher than in China today. (That’s in just 21 years – incredible, right?)

According to Bill and Melinda, there are three big myths impeding progress:

Myth #1: Poor countries are doomed to stay poor.

Not true.  In the last 50 years more than one billion people have risen out of extreme poverty and the percentage of people considered “very poor” has dropped by more than half since 1990. Many formerly poor countries now have thriving economies.

“Don’t let anyone tell you that Africa is worse off today than it was 50 years ago … If getting enough to eat, going to school, and living longer are measures of a good life, then life is definitely getting better there, said Bill Gates.  “These improvements are not the end of the story; they’re the foundation for more progress.”

Myth #2: Foreign aid is a big waste.

Again, not true at all.  “Since Melinda and I started the foundation 14 years ago, we’ve been lucky enough to go see the impact of programs funded by the foundation and donor governments. What we see over time is people living longer, getting healthier, and escaping poverty, partly because of services that aid helped develop and deliver.”

Mexico City 1986 to 2011

Most Americans think the U.S. allocates 25% of our national budget to foreign aid, when in truth we give less than 1%.

Take a moment to read the annual letter, but we especially love how Bill addresses the question of corruption in foreign aid programs, “There is a double standard at work here. I’ve heard people calling on the government to shut down some aid program if one dollar of corruption is found. On the other hand, four of the past seven governors of Illinois have gone to prison for corruption, and to my knowledge no one has demanded that Illinois schools be shut down or its highways closed.”

Myth #3:  Saving lives leads to over-population.

“It may be counterintuitive, but the countries with the most deaths have among the fastest-growing populations in the world, says Melinda Gates.  “This is because the women in these countries tend to have the most births, too.”

“When children survive in greater numbers, parents decide to have smaller families, says Melinda. “Consider Thailand. Around 1960, child mortality started going down. Then, around 1970, after the government invested in a strong family planning program, birth rates started to drop. In the course of just two decades, Thai women went from having an average of six children to an average of two. Today, child mortality in Thailand is almost as low as it is in the United States, and Thai women have an average of 1.6 children.”

An important part of breaking the cycle of poverty is providing access to contraceptives so women can better plan how many children to have, when to have them and how to best provide for them.  In turn, women can build a better life not just for their families, but for their countries.

“Creating societies where people enjoy basic health, relative prosperity, fundamental equality, and access to contraceptives is the only way to secure a sustainable world,” said Melinda.  “We will build a better future for everyone by giving people the freedom and the power to build a better future for themselves and their families.”

Food for Thought from Good Food Made Simple

January 20, 2014 by The Motherhood

The Motherhood was thrilled to help Good Food Made Simple launch their new Eat Clean website last week with a wonderful group of bloggers.

Good Food Made Simple’s Eat Clean, Eat Simple mission, as summarized by Keely at Lollygag Blog, is “to prove that frozen can be nutritious, labels can be ridiculously easy to understand, and that your family will dig these tasty options. And guess what? They’re right.”

The brand always uses clean ingredients in its wide variety of frozen food options – including oatmeal, burritos, egg patties, breakfast bowls and macaroni and cheese.

For current and future label readers alike, the new Eat Clean site provides a handy top 10 list of ingredients to avoid, a food-related “myth of the week,” and a portal for entering the Eat Clean, Eat Simple sweepstakes for $500 to shop at your local grocery store.

Include a few Good Food Made Simple meals on that grocery list – our blogger friends had some nice things to say about them. Sarah at Sarah’s Cucina Bella raved, “To actually read the ingredients list – I saw that they really are doing what they say they are doing. Better yet, when I tried the foods, I discovered that they really do taste good.”

As Elaina at A Time Out for Mommy noted, “What if I told you that you can buy prepackaged convenience foods and not have to worry about those awful ingredients? Then I guess we might be talking about Good Food Made Simple.”

You can learn more about the Good Food Made Simple products on their website.
