Taking Time to Rethink Varicose Veins

July 17, 2013 by The Motherhood

As busy moms we’re constantly on our feet juggling everything – work, family and personal matters – so when we have aches and pains or heaviness in our legs, we chalk it up to being busy or maybe even getting older. When we think about our health, there are so many other things we worry about that we never really stop to think about the health of our legs.

The Motherhood is thrilled to be working with Rethink Varicose Veins, a national education campaign that encourages women to think differently about varicose veins and understand that they are more than a cosmetic issue, but a health concern that is worthy of medical treatment.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are often raised above the skin on legs and look like twisted and bulging cords. They are caused when the valves in veins stop functioning and cause blood to pool in the legs.

Last week we had the opportunity to discuss the common misconceptions about varicose veins with Summer Sanders, U.S. Olympic Gold medalist and mom of two who has personal experience with varicose veins, and Dr. Julianne Stoughton, a board-certified vascular surgeon and head of the Vein Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The information that Summer and Dr. Stoughton shared was truly eye-opening. Here are some of the highlights:

  1. More than 30 million Americans, predominately women, suffer from varicose veins, or the more serious form of venous disease called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).  However, less than 10 percent of these people seek medical diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Sufferers of CVI often have symptoms of pain, aching, swelling, fatigue and heaviness in the legs.
  3. Women are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop varicose veins than men, primarily due to pregnancy. Other risk factors include prolonged standing, excess weight, age and family history.
  4. There are minimally-invasive treatment options available for varicose veins that have a short recovery time and allow you to get right back to your normal routine.
  5. Varicose veins and CVI are recognized as progressive and even sometimes serious medical conditions, so insurance plans usually cover treatment.
  6. Varicose veins can’t always be prevented but there are things you can do to help like staying physically active, avoiding prolonged standing, controlling blood pressure and wearing compression stockings.

The Rethink Varicose Veins website has a short self assessment tool to help you determine if you should talk to a vein specialist about further screening for varicose veins and CVI.

Westward Bound

July 12, 2013 by The Motherhood

As Erin continues her roadtrip to Seattle, we’ve been wondering “where in the country is Erin?”

She hasn’t left us wondering long as she has been reporting back to The Motherhood’s office with photos of her cross-country journey. With photos of breath-taking national monuments and memorials to best off-beat sites we never knew existed, we’ve been loving keeping up with Erin’s journey.

Have you been to any of these landmarks?

Erin enjoying the rugged beauty of the badlands.
The Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The World’s Only Corn Palace stands as a tribute to the agricultural heritage of South Dakota.
Erin and her husband take a break from being behind the wheel and check out the Devils Tower, a national monument in Wyoming. The site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the area.
The Jolly Green Giant statue in Blue Earth, Minnesota.
Erin stretches her legs in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
No stop in LaCrosse, Wisconsin would be complete without seeing the world’s largest six-pack!
Big Sky, Montana

Happy Fourth of July and a History Lesson

July 4, 2013 by The Motherhood

A very happy Independence Day to all of you and your families! I am currently in Madison, Wis., celebrating with my own family – a fairly low-key affair that has included a trip downtown, where we saw evidence of patriotism in front of the Capitol building:

Along with a backyard barbecue and a few of my mother’s flag-based decorations:

Earlier today, I was reading our local newspaper, the Wisconsin State Journal, and came across a section called “Today in History.” In honor of the holiday, here are a few noteworthy 4th of July events through the years, as written by the WSJ. First and most importantly…

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by delegates to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

On this date:

In 1802, the United States Military Academy officially opened at West Point, N.Y.

In 1831, the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, died in New York City at age 73.

In 1863, the Civil War siege of Vicksburg, Miss., ended as a Confederate garrison surrendered to Union forces.

In 1872, the 30th president of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, was born in Plymouth, Vt.

In 1912, the 48-star American flag, recognizing New Mexico statehood, was adopted.

In 1939, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees delivered his famous farewell speech in which he called himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

In 1959, America’s 49-star flag, recognizing Alaskan statehood, was officially unfurled.

In 1960, America’s 50-star flag, recognizing Hawaiian statehood, was officially unfurled.

In 1982, the space shuttle Columbia concluded its fourth and final test flight with a smooth landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

One year ago: Scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research in Geneva, where the world’s biggest atom smasher is located, cheered the apparent end of a decades-long quest for a new subatomic particle called the Higgs boson, or “God particle.”

It’s an important day in American and world history, and I hope it’s a happy one for you and your loved ones. Enjoy the holiday weekend!

The Motherhood Goes West

June 28, 2013 by The Motherhood

Cooper and Emily created The Motherhood in 2006 with this inspiring philosophy: Let’s raise all boats and make the world a little bit better every day. The day they hired me, just a few months after I moved to Pittsburgh with my husband in the summer of 2010, they made my world a little bit better – and The Motherhood continues to enrich my life every single day.

pgh

I’m both sad and excited to tell all of you out there in our network of amazing bloggers – some of whom I know quite well by now, and many others who I’m getting to know better with every project – that I am leaving The Motherhood’s Pittsburgh office and moving to Seattle, where I’ll be starting a West Coast office for our team.

I am thrilled that I’ll be able to continue working with all of you on the fun, useful, interesting, magical and world-altering campaigns we create together on a daily basis! You won’t hear much from me during the month of July as I move myself, my husband, our cat and all of our belongings across the country – but I’ll be sending updates back to the team in Pittsburgh, and they’ll let you know “where in the world” I am each week.

You can watch the blog and our Facebook page for updates.

If you have suggestions for stops along I-90, going through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington (phew!), please share them in the comments!
