Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring digital content so AI-driven search engines and large language models (LLMs) can easily analyze, summarize, and cite it. Many brands structure their content (and user, employee-generated content and influencer content) to get picked up by these LLMs for GEO visibility. But unlike SEO (search engine optimization), GEO is a bit harder to measure and does not have its own version of Google Analytics….yet. How do you measure generative engine optimization? There are now several tools starting to measure GEO and AI visibility; here are a few tips.
Search has fundamentally changed. More than half of U.S. adults (52%) use generative AI tools like ChatGPT for searches and 50% of Google searches trigger an AI summary. Not to mention, two years ago, Gartner predicted that by 2026, traditional search engine volume could fall by 25%. It’s becoming pivotal for brands and organizations to have content that is discoverable, with a keyword strategy to ensure content is structured in a way people are already searching (think question-based, conversational and up-to-date).
How CAN You MEASURE AI VISIBILITY?
These are some platforms that are the closest thing to a true GEO analytics platform, built for AI visibility measurement:
- Evertune: Tracks brand visibility across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and AI Overviews.
- Profound: Offers Agent Analytics for AI bot traffic tracking and Answer Engine Insights.
- LLM Pulse: Built so you know exactly where you show up and act on your AI visibility data to get mentioned in future AI answers.
- AirOps: Powers your AI search and content strategy, creation, and performance.
- Goodie AI: A pioneering AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) platform enabling brands to monitor, analyze, action and attribute their visibility and presence on AI search and agentic commerce.
- Scrunch: Gets your site AI-ready so you show up in answers and get cited.
CaN YOU MEASURE GEO and SEO?
Many brands and organizations already have a robust SEO measurement practice in place. The good news is that you may have more GEO capability than they realize with the following platforms:
- Semrush: Considered a top GEO tool in 2026 Semrush tracks five AI platforms, benchmarks against up to nine competitors, and ties AI visibility to organic authority via a 43 trillion backlink index. It’s currently the only platform connecting generative search performance to SEO signals in one system.
- SE Ranking: Tracks mentions and links across AI Overviews, Perplexity, and multiple languages. GEO features are included in all SEO plans.
- Ahrefs: A marketing platform built for search and AI.
CAN You TRACK GEO WITH GOOGLE ANALYTICS?
You can configure Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to start tracking AI-driven traffic. This year, it added a new AI Assistant channel that tracks traffic from chatbots, and that update can measure visits from AI assistants without using custom filters or workarounds.
According to Google, these were the changes to traffic source dimensions:
Campaign: Traffic from these sources identified with the “(ai-assistant)” campaign name
Medium: A new “ai-assistant” value is automatically assigned when the referrer matches a recognized AI Assistant
Channel Group: These visits are categorized under the “AI Assistant” channel
WHAT KPIs should I USE TO MEASURE GEO?
GEO requires a different set of success metrics than traditional SEO. Clicks and traffic alone don’t capture GEO’s impact. Prompt Coverage is a new KPI for 2026:
| KPI / Metric | What It Measures | Traditional Equivalent |
| AI Citation Share | How often your brand/content is cited vs. competitors across AI engines | Share of Voice / Organic Rank |
| AI Mention Rate | How frequently your brand appears in AI-generated answers | Impressions |
| Overview Visibility | Presence in Google AI Overviews | Featured Snippet |
| AI Bot Traffic | Which AI crawlers are visiting your site (server log analysis) | Googlebot crawl activity |
| Referral Clicks from AI | Traffic driven to your site from AI platforms | Organic Click-Through Rate |
| Zero-Click Displacement Rate | Loss in traditional CTR when AI answers appear | CTR decline from SERP features |
| AI Visibility Score | Aggregate score benchmarking brand mentions in AI responses | Domain Authority / Search Rank |
| Prompt Coverage | Which buyer-intent prompts trigger a citation for your brand vs. competitors | Keyword ranking coverage |
HOW TO GET STARTED
An easy first step to start to measure generative engine optimization is to ensure your Google Analytics is configured to GA4 with custom channel groups to capture AI referral traffic. Next, add “generative AI” as a lead source in your CRM and check if your existing tools (if you use any) like Semrush already have GEO features enabled. Then, check out some of the AI visibility tools mentioned to set up tracking, and have a steady stream of content enabled to be cited by AI.
If you’re looking into an AI visibility/GEO measurement vendor, ask the right questions such as:
- Which specific prompts does my brand get cited for, and which competitors appear instead?
- How many AI surfaces do you track, and which ones? (Look for: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews)
- Can you tie AI citation changes back to specific content actions we took?
- How often do you refresh AI response data, and how do you handle model updates?
Search and social are becoming part of the same discovery ecosystem. The shift of, “which pages best answers this question?” to “which answer best answers this specific query?” is here. Search has shifted, and savvy brands and organizations are keeping up by making the shift to create content that gets picked up, and they measure generative engine optimization. Are you ready?
