What Today’s Moms Are Saying About Kids & Outdoor Play

What Today’s Moms Are Saying About Kids & Outdoor Play

April 4, 2013 by The Motherhood

We encourage our kids to play outside. We know exploring our environment and developing a basic appreciation of nature is a fundamental part of being a kid. But some families have better access to a rooftop deck than a hiking trail, and some parents just don’t love the outdoors all that much themselves.

With that in mind, how can we encourage our kids to get outside, and what counts as quality outdoor time?

Working with the National Wildlife Federation and its “Be Out There” program, which encourages kids and families to spend time outdoors, The Motherhood surveyed more than 300 moms nationwide and hosted a number of virtual focus groups to gauge their feelings on the issue.

The analysis of the survey results, along with highly productive feedback from the focus groups, has shifted the National Wildlife Federation’s philosophy on what it really means to “Be Out There.” Moms don’t need to take their families on a hike down the Appalachian Trail. A simple walk through the neighborhood, pointing out shapes in the clouds and stopping to explore an anthill or two, is just one simple and accessible way to introduce kids to nature.

As we heard from a mom during one focus group: “Making it clear that nature can easily fit into your life will draw in people who feel overwhelmed that they have to plan a full day of outdoor activities.”

Another noted that outdoor time shouldn’t be complicated: “Go for a walk with your family. Fly a kite. It can change your whole outlook, and should be simple.”

You can click here to glance through an infographic that breaks down the survey results, or keep scrolling to see it in this post.

Bloggers emBARK on Pet Health with Sergeant’s

April 3, 2013 by The Motherhood

At The Motherhood, one thing that’s near and dear to our hearts is our beloved pets. We all have “fur babies” who are an important part of our families!

For our own pets and animals everywhere, when Sergeant’s Pet Care Products approached us with an opportunity to help animal shelters across the country during Responsible Pet Owners Month, we jumped at the opportunity.

Sergeant's - Courtney and her daughterCourtney of Courtney’s Sweets (and her beautiful daughter)
before volunteering at her local shelter.

The Sergeant’s emBARK on Pet Health program asked pet owners everywhere to take an online pledge, which triggered the donation of a Sergeant’s Pet Health Kit – filled with important, useful items like pet shampoo and dental kits – to participating animal shelters across the country. The Motherhood partnered with an amazing team of animal-loving bloggers to spread the word about the pledge and share their own experiences at local shelters.

Staci of November Sunflower reported, “I’m so thankful that The Motherhood, Sergeant’s and emBARK are providing me with the chance to share this amazing emBARK on Pet Health Program with everyone.” She also appreciated the fact that “a shelter benefiting from the program [is] close enough for me to volunteer at with the kids.”

Shasta of Faithfully Free was so excited to share the pledge that she started talking about adopting a pet of her own:

“I love animals, and can’t wait until I can adopt my own furbaby (hopefully sometime in the next few months). I also love brands that give back to the community, and that is exactly what Sergeant’s is doing right now.”

One mom, Cate of Sweetnicks, even took the program to the next level by hosting her daughter’s birthday party at her local shelter. Her daughter’s love of animals made it the perfect place to make memories and raise awareness of the emBARK on Pet Health program at the same time.

So, do you have a few seconds? Take the emBARK on Pet Health pledge to trigger the donation of a pet health kit to a local shelter. You’ll even get a $3 off coupon for your next Sergeant’s or Sentry purchase!

Pledge. Help. Protect.

Shop, Cook & Eat Healthy With Your Family

April 2, 2013 by The Motherhood

March is National Nutrition Month, so last month was the perfect time for The Motherhood to partner with the Walmart Foundation and Michelle Dudash, registered dietitian and Cordon Bleu-certified chef, to hold a brief invitation-only blogger webinar on the importance of school breakfast and nutrition education.

The Motherhood was compensated by The Walmart Foundation for organizing and hosting the briefing session. Thoughts expressed in this blog post are our own.

We met for one hour online for a brief presentation from Michelle, followed by an in-depth Q&A!

Walmart - Michelle DudashMichelle Dudash, RD, Cordon Bleu-certified chef and author of Clean Eating for Busy Families

Not only is the Walmart Foundation educating families about healthy eating habits, they’ve also announced they’ll be donating $6.7 million in grants to five national nonprofits providing children with school breakfast and helping families develop better eating habits. This is part of their $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment through 2015 to help fight hunger in America, and Walmart’s 2011 initiative to provide customers with healthier and more affordable food choices. How amazing is that?

During the briefing, Michelle talked about the Walmart Foundation’s non-profit contributions and gave us all some great tips for eating better and taking care of our families, even when we don’t have a lot of time! Here are a few of our favorite tips:

  • Cook once, eat twice. Cook a big batch of chicken, and you can use leftovers for so many things! Lunches, tacos, soup, etc. Saves you time, dishes and money.
  • Take monthly and weekly grocery trips. Stock up on the essentials once a month and then go weekly to pick up produce and proteins you’ll need for the week.
  • Look for “Great For You” icons. At Walmart, these icons make shopping SO easy! If a product has this sticker, it means they’ve been checked out for sugar, sodium, fat, etc., and meet the FDA guidelines for healthy foods.
  • Get kids in the kitchen. If you have a picky eater, get them to help you prepare dinner. Children are more likely to eat what they have helped you prepare!
  • Spring clean your kitchen! Get rid of the things you no longer use, and re-organize so the healthy foods are out in the open. Showcase your produce in clear jars on the shelf in your fridge so you don’t forget about it.

We are so proud to have been able to work with the Walmart Foundation and Michelle to talk with an amazing team of knowledgeable bloggers about better nutrition. Check out what the team had to say in their own blog posts after learning from Michelle:

Donate A Photo…Help a Non-Profit With Johnson & Johnson

April 2, 2013 by The Motherhood

Get your phone out and get ready to take a few more cute photos of your kids, pets, laundry pile (well, maybe that’s not so cute). The point is, you can take a photo of ANYTHING and use the new Donate a Photo app from Johnson & Johnson to benefit one of three non-profit organizations.

JohsonJohnson1_ Causes

Everyone at The Motherhood has been using the app daily since it became available on the App Store and Google Play on April 2, and we absolutely love it. It’s easy and fun to use, and it takes just seconds to do a good deed for the day.

This post on making a difference in the world through your own photography is brought to you by Johnson & Johnson, which has hired us to execute this campaign. Thoughts shared here are all our own.

Each time a photo is shared, Johnson & Johnson will donate $1* to one of their partner non-profit organizations – currently Save the Children, Safe Kids Worldwide and Keep America Beautiful – and you can choose which of the three benefits from your donated photo.

When a cause reaches its goal, anther will take its place. All causes will stay in the app, so you’ll always be able to explore the galleries.

Here’s how it works:

Step One: Go to your app store and download the free Donate a Photo app
Step Two: Open the app and sign up for your free profile
Step Three: Click the Donate button on the bottom of your screen
Step Four: Choose a cause
Step Five: Take a new photo or select one from your gallery
Step Six: Donate and share with your friends on Facebook and Twitter
Step Seven: Donate one photo a day, every day!!!

The Donate A Photo app is available on both iOS and Android platforms and can be accessed on any device (but donations can only be made through mobile).

JohnsonJohnson3_ Collage

*Johnson & Johnson has curated a list of trusted causes, and you can donate a photo to one cause, once a day. Each cause will appear in the app until it reaches its goal, or the donation period ends. If the goal isn’t reached, the cause will still get a minimum donation.

Celebrating With Great Value

April 2, 2013 by The Motherhood

Most moms can use a break every once in a while—especially in the kitchen! To provide some inspired, tasty shortcuts, we were excited to invite 15 amazing budget-friendly bakers to participate in a five-month program for Great Value refrigerated dough products.

The program was centered around four holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Spring. For every holiday, we challenged our blogger team to come up with two recipes reviewing designated Great Value products. We were so impressed with the mouthwatering recipes and pictures that were shared! Take a look for yourself:

Jen, Thrifty NW Mom, agreed that, “As a busy working mom, I am all about finding time-savers in the kitchen to be able to provide fun, homemade goodies, but without spending all day in the kitchen, which is where Great Value products come in.”

Kasandria from Southern Bella’s Ways to Save blogged about the reasonable price of Great Value, noting, “The best thing about these cookies, besides how easy they were to make, was that by shopping at WalMart and using Great Value products, they were very inexpensive to make! I loved using the Great Value cookie dough. Super soft, and had a great taste to it. Which, as I’ve been saying, you don’t have to suffer quality or taste for price with the Great Value brand.”

Since we know that Pinterest is the go-to place for finding recipes online, we made sure to create a Great Value Pinterest board for every holiday. The recipes and ideas were a huge hit among readers.

Karen of Koupon Karen’s thoughts on the program echo our own: “I’ve really enjoyed working with the Great Value brand the past 4 months, and I’m sad to say this is the last segment of the project.  But that doesn’t mean I won’t be using Great Value brand products anymore, because we have some fun new recipes that we will be making again, and probably some new ones.”

The Motherhood and the Centers for Disease Control

March 31, 2013 by The Motherhood

The Motherhood hosted an incredible Blog Tour and Twitter party for the Centers for Disease Control to get the word out that the flu season doesn’t end with the cold weather months – and the flu vaccine can make a big difference to mothers and families.

Important campaign messages:

  • Every year about 20,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized from flu complications
  •  Depending on the year, between 5-20% of the US population gets the flu
  •  Kids are 2-3 times more likely to get the flu than adults because their immune systems are less developed
  •  Most healthy adults are contagious a full day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick

Tips for averting the flu from the CDC and the community:

  • Throw tissues away as soon as possible (instead of leaving in pockets or on bedside table)
  • Encourage your young ones to cover sneezes with their arm instead of hands
  • Cellphones, the TV remote & computer keyboard host a TON of germs – clean them regularly
  • Get your annual flu vaccine!

Thank you to the Centers for Disease Control for joining forces with The Motherhood and to the amazing bloggers who worked on the campaign with us! Congratulations on a fantastic program, everyone!
